Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

Did my first cowash today. My hair looks horrible. Of course that could be because while at a park today a child on a platform above me at the park poured most of a Pepsi right on too of my head. Then an hour later while cooking with my toddler he dunked his hand in some cake batter and rubbed it in my hair. I'm in desperate need of a shower!! Super gross! So needless to say I'll have to repeat this experiment to get more accurate results. :)

Rosebloom, sorry for laughing . . .   It sounds like you cowashed with more than conditioner today! I wonder what the pH, protein level, etc. of Pepsi and cake batter is?

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

Alex, thank you so much! I actually tried to take a picture of my curls today before I left the house. I couldn't get a good anonymous picture, so I deleted them! Anyway, the hair looked pretty today; however, I noticed that there is frizz after doing errands today. I need to figure out how to "lock the style" so it does not change from home to stores! :loopy:

monster baby, than you for the tip! You are a lifesaver both with the Ojon and now with this product. I have seen it mentioned over and over on Naturally Curly. It is good to know that you had a positive experience with it. You know I will have to go buy it now . . . right?

OK so my girlfriends are visiting me at the beach house this weekend ( love my dh as he really is a great host to my gfs) and one of them is singing the praises of wen. Her hair is wavy and lovely. Apparently wen has many different formulas depending on your hair type. She said it dramatically improved her hair. Probably many of you know about wen but I didn't and just wanted to share with you guys in case it might be helpful. She lives far away (Australia) so I haven't seen her since October and her hair looks fabulous!!!

I've used Wen..and had hair loss.
when I looked into it, it was very 50/50 on how people react to the products.
Even looking into the Amazon reviews is split 50/50.
it could turn out great for you, but for me, it was absolutely terrible.

only upside was that it smelled great. that's it. :wink2:

Kelinas, thanks for chiming in about Wen. I am going to pass. I am pleased with my current regime and not up for the risk lol. I wonder what is in it that can cause hair loss?! I am glad though you shared your experience because I wouldn't want anyone else here to experience that side effect without knowing it was a possibility.

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

Rosebloom, yikes :o that's the opposite of deep conditioning treatment .

ClassyRocks, glad my suggestions worked for you and what's one more bottle of conditioner :naughty:

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

So I'm continuing product testing and today's experiment didn't go well. I used L'Oreal EverCurl sulfate-free cleansing conditioner, which promised non-drying anti-frizz system, to wash my hair. I'd say my results were the exact opposite - dried out and frizzy hair. My hair was squeaking ;( in the shower, not a good sign, so I tried to salvage the situation with lots of other conditioner but it still feels like straw . Thinking about doing a deep treatment as a remedy.

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

Hi baby monster,

It's frustrating! I just want a "go to routine". It's also hard to keep the "cones" out of the product line; I have purchased a couple of things only to have to return them when I researched the ingredients. I know I am repeating myself . . . . . .

I have used the DevaCurl products the most. One thing I have learned is that DevaCurl products don't play well together in my hair! To clarify, I cannot use two or more of the product line in my hair at one time. My hair becomes opaque and the texture changes even if very little of the products are used. However, I do like their leave in styling products . . . just one at a time, no layering!

I also like the Tress conditioner you recommended, the Suave naturals that Rosebloom mentioned. I think the AG product line might have some good products that I would like to experiment with at a later date.

I would love to find a curly girl friendly hair spray to "lock in" the hairstyle without feeling like a helmet though. If anyone has suggestions, I'll test them this week! :wink2:

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

So reading all these posts have gotten me to think if my forsaken hair.
I hated the curliness of it, so I always iron it straight. Recently (past few years) my medications have drastically thinned my hair.

I have for a few years now skipped shampooing for conditioning. iShampoo only 1-2 times a week, and condition
wash once a week .

I've started Cowashing...and I LOVE it!! my hair feels soft, and wonderful!

As for product, Iam loving the Bioterra Curl Creme, layered with a gel.
Today was the first time in years that I've worn my hair naturally, without curling or straightening, and it's great.
No crunchiness, no frizz, no billowing triangle; just soft curly hair :)

as for hair type, I thought I was a 3b but my hair today was much more wavey than curly. maybe because I'm just starting to be nice again? who know!

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

Hi Kelinas! :wavey:

I am so glad you had a good curly hair day! It is interesting how people's hair changes with age, medications or illness. My mother said her hair was "stick straight" until she became ill as a child; then, it went extremely curly!

I still cannot let go of smoothing my bangs and the top layer with a hairdryer!

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

I just got highlights done, and while I love the color of my hair, I do notice it has dried out and needs extra care. Anyone have recommendations for a good deep conditioning treatment for curls?

This might sound crazy but I occasionally use olive oil for deep conditioning. I shampoo, rinse and apply extra virgin olive oil (supermarket) and go about my household chores for a few hours and then rinse out. Silky smooth. Another deep conditioner I use is pure untreated coconut oil purchased from the health food store. I like to vary my deep conditioners depending on the needs of my hair. I also use ouidad deep conditioner and Jessicurl deep conditioning treatment (purchased from Curlmart). I really like these as well though they are more pricey than olive oil and coconut oil.

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

+1 to Coconut oil.
I. actually have a Spritz bottle in my bathroom that I'd filled with CO
Iuse it to seal ends, and 1 deep conditioning a week. u
I heard that got low porosity, it can take up to 14hrs tho soak in..i have HP, but I put it in dry hair, wrap it in either a towel or cap& sleep.

next am, wash out with conditioner.

I am also a fan of homemade avacado hair masks/ banana masks.

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

For deep conditioning I'd recommend Ojon product linked up upthread or oil. Others mentioned olive or coconut oils but I prefer light sesame oil. I actually ended up doing a deep treatment with sesame oil after my last product testing went haywire.

Lol being Korean, I can't imagine using sesame oil.

I'd be tempted to eat my hair half way through!

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

I used to condition my hair with olive oil but am no longer mind clean about it after I realized people consume olive oil with their salads. My Indian friends condition their curly hair with coconut oil and it seems to work (frizz free). I, too, use sesame oil in my cooking so that's not mind clean for me either.

That makes it more mind clean for me... If I can consume it then it must be safe enough to apply to my hair if that makes any sense.

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

I'm with missy on this one, besides, light sesame oil doesn't have the same scent or texture as dark toasted kind.

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

I have been wanting to try coconut oil too! I have read nearly all positive reviews on it. =)

I did try virgin olive oil about a week ago and my hair did not like it. :(( Please do not let my experience keep you from trying it because many people swear by it not to mention it is an ingredient in many hair products especially for curlies. I think my hair reacts better to argan oil, shea butter, jojoba oil, etc. I have noticed that those ingredients are in products that work well with my hair type. There is a product line called Shea Moisture that Target carries; it is mentioned a lot on the naturally curly website for hydration/treatments.

I also would like to echo baby monster's recommendation of the Ojon oil especially warmed up on the highlighted sections, and leave on over night. I have only done that once, and the rest of the time I have babied certain pieces of my hair with a little Ojon during the daytime. HTH :wavey:

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

Thanks for the helpful replies! I will give olive oil a try. If it doesn't work, I'll order the Ojon stuff from Sephora.

Did you try? how did it work out?

I learned a new lesson today.
While my hair loves the layering of the curl creme and styling gel
it doesn't like the two mixed beforehand.
Layering (which minimal fussing) looks neat. Mixing in my palm made a.rice paste looking concoction that I stupidly assumed would go away once in my hair.

Looked like I had dandruff from hell today!
lesson learned!

I used to mix 2 products like you did before I applied and found it is better to apply each to your hair one at a time. Though these days with the high humidity I find (for my hair) the heat and humidity gel is all I need to get through these humid days. The less product the better for me which seems counterintuitive. But that's my new discovery with the extra heat and humidity we have been experiencing in NY this summer.

I got a haircut yesterday with a new person in my neighborhood ( think he took off too much -I asked for just the split ends to be cut). I rewashed it this morning and let it dry naturally. I only applied the heat and humidity gel before I left this morning as per my new discovery. It is very humid today and I just got home and snapped 2 pics for you guys...all in all not too bad considering the heat and humidity. I really like the Ouidad products for my hair.

I find co-washing does not work for my hair for some reason. It just weighs down my fine hair too much.

ETA: I miss my bangs. ::)

This! =) Beautiful pictures!

Missy, your hair still looks really long, but I know how you feel. Your hair did great with the humidity! It's downright steamy where I am today.

How much of the Climate Control did you use? I think I have a sample of it, but I have been afraid to try it. The Ouidad gel cream made my hair crunchy, so I probably did something wrong.

I am getting accustomed to the DevaCurl gel paired with Potion 9 as a leave in conditioner; I layer one product at a time.

Also, I have tried co-washing twice. I don't feel like my hair is clean and free of the previous day's product. I am going to stick with a sulfate free shampoo for now.

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

Hi Classy, I use about the amount of a nickel in both diameter and width- so not much. My hair is thin so a little goes a long way. I just put that small amount in my palm and rub both hands together and run it through my hair starting from the ends detangling gently as I work my way up. I then comb it through with the detangling comb to make sure I equally coat my strands and then take my dh's undershirt and scrunch. This is the method I find works best for minimizing frizz. After my hair is dry if there is some crunch (and there usually is some since I am not using a diffuser) I use my fingers to gently break it up.

Do the same with the gel cream. After your hair is dry just take your fingers and gently tousle it to break up the crunch. That should do the trick without frizzing it as long as your hair is dry when you do it. HTH!

That's a shame! I'm never using shampoo again! (this terrifies DH  )
Granted, it's only been a week but I've noticed allot less breakages in the shower and less tangles.

I'm so happy I read this.thread!

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

Missy, thank you for the tips! I may try air drying at some point in the future. I really need to have my hair shaped, not just cut/trimmed!

Kelinas, I will try co-washing at a later point; I am so glad you are loving it! I may be trying to introduce too many changes to my hair at once. I am still trying to work with my new styling products.

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

I thought I would pass along that I went to Sephora today. My SA is great about making samples for me to try including hair products! It is a great way to try some expensive products/finishers before you spend $$$ on a full size!
