Granted there are some folks that have no reason to decline a vaccine, they have read things on the internet, a story from a friend, maybe something they read on social media. They haven’t personally experienced an adverse event.

Then there are people who have had horrific personal experiences, who trusted doctors who failed them, trusted government agencies that didn’t protect them and became an unfortunate statistic. They became part of a club that they never wanted to be a part of and unfortunately always have to be on the defensive because declining a vaccine, any vaccine for any reason is akin to wearing a scarlet letter in today’s society.

I point this out because some of us are not declining this shot (or any other shot) out of selfishness but out of fear based on prior personal experiences.

I’ve reminded people that the mask needs to be over their nose so many times, DH is worried incase someone gets nasty, but I’m past the point of caring. I haven’t given up months of my life for idiots to make this go on any longer than necessary @seaurchin.

Well i thank you for your bravery

One of the reasons why our tiny Pacific neighbours are covid free is because last year Samoa had a measles epidemic and tragically children died. For what ever reason way too many people had slipped through the cracks of their immunisation program - their health system was stretched very thin coping with the measles
They had to work really hard to catch up on vaccinations
They and their neighbours learnt their lesson the hard way and have been very successful at keeping their people safe from covid
In that respect those kiddies did not die in vain, their deaths ultimately saved their islands

if only the same could be said for the many many covid deaths in (some) highly developed wealthy countries

I will, but probably not right away. I don't think Canada will have enough to roll out all at once, and I'm ok sheltering in place for a bit longer so I will let the more vulnerable get it first.

My parents have NOT been taking covid seriously at all (and are extremely high risk), luckily they arent anti-vaxxers and will likely be one of the early ones to get it, so that will alleviate a lot of my stress. Makes me sick the amount of misinformation going around about vaccines (even within this thread). #fakescience strikes again

@YadaYadaYada The boat metaphor applies to other comments in this tread related to people being upset over anti maskers, anti social distantcers, anti anythingers.

I think most of us are aware that there will always be exceptions to anything. Regarding the covid vaccine -- I don't know how many people have medical reasons to avoid the vaccine but my hope is that the majority who are able to get it because they aren't exceptions choose to get it and that they are the majority of the population because if enough who can get it don't get it, then the misery of illness, death, lockdowns, economic hardship continues ad infinitum.

I will get it. As a youngish healthy person who has been working from home since March, I'm last on the distribution list. I got the flu 10 years ago and ended up in the hospital. I've gotten my flu shot ever since. Am I worried about potential side effects? Yes. I am more worried about spreading covid.

@Matata, I understand, admittedly I’m probably a bit sensitive on this subject because we do tend to get attacked (notes much on PS but in general). There have been past vaccine threads that went south very quickly.

You should be the people protected by the herd immunity. Unfortunately, it has been and will be compromised by people who believe in conspiracy theories. A record number of people died of the measles in 2019, 207,500.

please stay safe.

@YadaYadaYada -

I hear you on this. Utterly.

I've had experiences of extreme negligence from the medical profession that led to both unnecessary surgeries (the full 'slice the torso open' kind) and near death situations for me that were dodged only because of my own hyper vigilance.

I was also sexually assaulted by a male doctor alone in a locked room during a 'medical exam' when I was 19 years old. He had the key and he let me out when he felt like it.

So believe me when I tell you - I do not trust doctors.

But I trust science. I trust double blind. I trust wide ranging studies. I trust STATISTICS.

I'll be getting the vaccine.

I have a freind with mental health issues who is so worked up the vacine
Some days i want to get mad - but that wont help him because he becomes super withdrawn if he has a difference of opinion with any one
I don't know how many times ive said its ok to disagreed
i don't know what to say to alleviate his anxiety/ paranoia
Its odd because he has a huge germ phobia and has agrophobia but is so worked up over how we cant go out abd socialise
He lives in the bay area - not sure exactly where as he's an internet freind - does anyone know of free support groups for anxixty and depression- he's on the spectrum somewhere
I can think of a hundred things to help him if he lived here - do you have a citizens advice beauru in the states?
He doesn't have a good track record with doctors or laywers and is on some kind of disability
Every day i get emails talking about suicide but there is very little i can do from here

It was a looooong time ago, @House Cat , and I've long since healed from it. But I am now what they call proactive in self advocacy - or, alternately - a pain in the butt patient. And I SO don't care. I care so little I can barely express it. I do what's comfortable for ME. But I also try not to throw the baby out with the bath water. Ergo, I will definitely have the vaccine (just to bring it back to the topic at hand).

i hear you. i understand.

personally, i have not had positive experiences with doctors. in fact quite the opposite.

even though, most of my family members are medical doctors, my brother, my paternal uncles, ... it doesn't make it any better or easier

i am not anti vaccine but i won't be first in line for it. i will assess the risks when the time comes. until then i will make myself as comfy and happy, as humanly possible, in lockdown and shelter in place and self quarantine life

So sorry @mrs-b, that is just heartbreaking to read, you definitely have to be your own advocate.

@Big Fat Facets, there are many wonderful doctors, I don’t want to bash them as a whole because there are many wonderful people in the medical community doing great things and making major sacrifices. My son’s doctors did not listen to me and it was maddening and he suffered for it.

@House Cat, if we aren’t protected by herd immunity we possibly have some antibodies since we have had the virus already. Of course they don’t know if immunity is lasting and the virus will definitely mutate but hopefully we have some protection.

Thank you for your very informative posts @m-cubed, it’s very reassuring. I had previously stated that I would wait to have the vaccine until I was absolutely sure it was safe, but now I’m of the opinion, I’d have it as soon as it’s available to me. My DH is older, so will be eligible for the vaccine probably quite a lot sooner than I will.

We have been extremely careful throughout this pandemic, abided by the rules, always wear a mask when we have to go out, and have tried not to complain about not seeing our only child since 29th December.

I can not understand people complaining about wearing a mask, how hard is it? I’ve even read ridiculous statements from people saying it was dangerous as you’re breathing in ‘bad’ air and it’ll kill you! I think the one thing this has shown us, is that there are plenty of people ready to believe everything they read or hear without doing any research at all.

My DS was just telling me on Monday about either an article he’d read or an interview he’d seen of a healthcare worker driving to work, drained and exhausted, ready to face another shift. She couldn’t believe what she was seeing, people queuing, unmasked and crowded together, to get in to a bar!!! WTF, I really struggle to understand how people still think it’s safe to do things like that.

My hope is that these vaccines are going to be available in the quantities needed to roll out the kind of programme necessary to get this under control.

When we’re finally through this, I fully expect to see plenty of denyers smugly saying that it was no big deal.

I truly hope that all the lovely PSers and their families get through this and remain safe and healthy.

Re masks: I am unconvinced.

Studies have shown that if you wear gloves or masks, you may be more at risk because you take fewer precautions in terms of distancing for example. With masks, if they don't fit properly you are also likely to touch your face frequently. Which puts you massively at risk.

From everything I have read, if used perfectly masks do reduce transmission.

If they are not used perfectly, they don't, and may increase transmission.

So sorry to hear this; that is awful.

But, I don't want to sound like a dick; but I'm the exact opposite in terms of how I feel.

I was raped at 15, then 'abused' (or, basically, repeatedly raped) from 16-18. I have massive trust issues and need to be in 'control' otherwise I freak out

The idea of having to have a vaccine I don't need or want freaks me out.

@barbie86

i am truly very sorry to learn that you had to endure that type of violence during your adolescence.

i do not believe that the united states government will mandate, covid vaccination. i don't see how they could enforce a mandatory covid vaccine ...

Im so sad to read this. I hope you have had love and support to help you get through this

looking from the outside in, i also don't think your country will make the vacine compulsory - im sure mine won't either

I am more than happy to be part of the herd and get vaccinated so people who have issues with it don't have to
and perhaps you will find by the time they roll it out and most of us have had it you may be comfortable enough to deside to get the vacine for your self
Meantime take care

 should I raise my hand at this point??

From everything that I've learned through this study, In general terms, some people will get short term symptoms with the 2 dose Moderna Vaccine. They kinda suck but generally well tolerated. The good is that mRNA vaccines out there are not real corona, and they sufficiently work well to create antibodies in most people.

For those of us that volunteered, we did so for 2 years. So, not sure what will happen if they get the emergency filing. I would HOPE they would tell those that didn't get the real vaccine to get it.

But yes If I find that I did not get the real doses, (I've guessed I didn't as I did not have any antibodies base on a lab test) I will take them.

If I did get the real doses and didn't make antibodies, I'm obviously not from this world.:lol:

I totally agree that worn incorrectly, then a mask is of no use whatsoever. However, I wear a well fitting mask correctly, so I do not need to be constantly touching or readjusting it. When I remove it, I either immediately wash my hands (if I’m near a sink) or use sanitiser. I was a dental nurse, so well used to having to wear a mask all day and carry out sterilisation procedures on the surgery and instruments.

I’m sorry for everything you’ve been through @barbie86 no child should ever have to endure such horrors.

In which case, is it possible that your view of the vaccine is informed by your past experiences, rather than the scientific research about the vaccine? It just strikes me that you're reaching for reasons to support you in *not* having the vaccine; could that be due to the anxiety you experience during a loss of control? If that's the case, there are bigger issues at play here and not having the vaccine is unlikely to resolve them.

No criticism. No judgment. Just some thoughts from a retired therapist.

I will get the vaccine when it’s available to me. I say that with some certainty knowing that it’ll be a while before it would be available to me, so many other brave souls will have been vaccinated before it’s my turn.

I’m not that concerned about getting a bad case of COVID myself, but I am very concerned about the possibility that I might somehow get it, with either mild symptoms or none, and pass it on to somebody else.

And yes, I’ll get it to help make up for the covid deniers and anti-vaxxers that are especially prevalent on Sweetie’s side of the family...
