Somebody's Gotta Buy This Piece!

What is funny @lavenderdragonfly23 ? It is the stone that Elizat bought that was rejected by the authentication system.

Noooo, the pardon my interruption. I thought it was very clever - I loved it! I need to scroll back and see what happened, it’s super cute!

@elizat don’t give up the search! What are you looking for, I can help keep my eye out for you!

I’ve noticed that eBay links are doing that for some reason. I have no idea why! I didn’t name the link that lol.

Oh! Thats so weird!

I agree with @lavenderdragonfly23 and @Dreamer_D that an antique Tiffany setting is an exquisite thing, a piece of history, and not at all the same as a new setting, even a very well-made new setting. That setting might very well be worth $5K to some jewelry collectors for its design, workmanship, and history.

I also think that there's a significant difference in value and history between an intact antique Tiffany item and an antique Tiffany setting with a new stone set in it.

I wonder why someone removed the main stone?

Maybe it was something relatively soft or fragile, like an opal or aquamarine, and got abraded or broken?

It seems to only happen once in a while. I've had it happen, and then not. It is strange.

I looked at the seller’s website out of curiosity and they have a ton of Tiffany settings with the center stone removed. I wonder if people sold diamonds in the past to raise money and now people are selling metal since scrap value is higher than it used to be and this business buys up the brand name metal pieces instead of letting them go for scrap?

I’ve seen something like this in Instagram videos where settings are tossed in a bucket after the stone is removed. I’m guessing people sold the entire ring. The settings are mostly sold for scrap. With the branded settings they can be resold unscrapped for a premium and I think certain specialty sellers are seeking out the branded settings to resell. There’s another antique settings dealer on eBay that seems to have a huge source for scrapped antique settings; he puts low grade stones in these settings and resells as antiques. I also watched an 18k watch get scrapped piece by piece the other day on Instagram, where the jeweler said it is worth more as scrap than as a watch. The jeweler was admiring the craftsmanship of the watch as he was cutting it apart. It’s all a high volume game I guess, in the industry.

Yeah, that seller who sells the ugly sapphires or tourmalines, or whatever, in worn out old settings really bugs me.

Wow, I guess that makes sense!
Thanks for the warning also!

Impractical, gorgeous, and super expensive things like this are my weakness

Were you looking for a 22k Tiffany band, speakeasyjewels on IG posted a size 5.25 or size 5.5 with a 1915 inscription

Thank you! I have her on speed dial:)

I’m looking for an…
Antique Tiffany
22k band, with curved logo
Size 5-6
*names and date from 1800’s*

Between speakeasy eBay and Etsy, there’s several early 1900’s. I’m holding out for 1800’s, hopefully I can find one in my size so I don’t have to resize and loose the original patina. I’m only planning on having one yellow gold band, so I’m patiently waiting

I think I was thinking of this one:
What a lot of antique rings they claim to have found with awful little "alexandrites" in them!

But this one also has an unusually large source of worn-out antique rings with dark little sapphires stuck into them:

Be very careful with the first one. Yes, they have a 100% rating and a lot of sales… if you try to return with them, they require positive feedback before they refund you. I have spoken with them twice on two separate items and the conversation has not been friendly.

I have had similar interactions with this seller.

Wow, did you report them to ebay?

I had a poor experience as well. They enhance their photos (majorly) and I found them less than pleasant to deal with. They have some nice pieces but I suspect it’s very hit and miss, and very hard to tell, given their practices with photos.

Wow, I’ve returned two things with them and they never communicated with me or asked for positive feedback first.

This is so promising to hear … I’m glad you had a better experience than I did … maybe things changed since my experience ❤️
