Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling product!

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

ive been working on this.
I still use Evco to seal.but I haven't done any Dt's with it.
I did however, do a protein condition (Ion protein rebuilder, 1 fl oz bg- enough for 3 conditions for my thin hair!) and I definately feel that my hair liked it more than I thought.
I've let my hair go natural for about 2 days (no product, lazy home days)
and last night I did the protein and plopped (scrunched with bioterra creme first) and left the plop on overnight.
woke.up, took the Tshirt off, and spewed my coffee all over the sink. Hair was a HOT mess, but some water and creme made it great (betterthan it normally is)

Might not look it in the picture, but it looks allot better than last week.

Also, to all the Deva devotees
I read that some products like Deva Onecurl has Dmdm hydatonin. are y'all okay with that?
I'm on the fence- i Purchased a curl.creme that had rave.reviews but.I'm unsure of putting it on my already stressed head.

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

Oh, my goodness, ladies, you've been busy. I'm going to have to go back and read through the thread tomorrow. We are back in CA, after three weeks visiting family on the Jersey Shore. I can tell you, my hair sure likes the NJ humidity, as long as I use plenty of gel. Now, I'm back to my usual routine, that I described early on in the thread. I just use less gel at home. Good night!

Wow! Kelinas, your hair looks incredible! Your new routine is really working, and you should be proud of beautiful your hair is. It does not look thin in the picture . . . just wonderful wavy curls! :appl:

I used the Ion products a long time ago, and I do remember that line being great (your hair is proof). I am only using one of the Deva gels, but it is not the Onecurl. I will have to look up the Dmdm hydatonin. Is it one of the "bad" ingredients? :errrr:

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

About DMDM HYDANTOIN: DMDM hydantoin is an antimicrobial formaldehyde releaser preservative. People exposed to such formaldehyde-releasing ingredients may develop a formaldehyde allergy or an allergy to the ingredient itself and its decomposition products. In the U.S., approximately 20% of cosmetics and personal care products contain a formaldehyde-releaser and the frequency of contact allergy to these ingredients is much higher among Americans compared to studies in Europe.

it's a banned ingrediant in a few Asian countries
I've read that it won't affect you much since it goes on your hair, and not on your skin/ scalp but still...:/

Hi KaeKae, I've missed you! Kudos for you in mastering your curls in the humidity! :wink2:

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

I've come to the realization that this will be a long journey of hits and misses.

I posted before that my hair loves protein, and I do PTs.once a week,.sealing with oil.

whilst in the shower tonight, I.actually read the ingredients and it has polyquats
in this case it's polyquaternium-10. It's water soluble so I'm not too worried but now I'm on the search.for a new PT without polyquats.

Suggestions?

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

oh and i managed to find a salon that specializes in CG!!
CURLY HAIR SPECIALISTS

Love them or hate them, if you have curls then you probably have experienced the special set of problems associated with them. Salon Savoy follows “The Curly Girl Method” by Lorraine Massey. Our stylists are highly experienced in cutting curly hair, either dry or wet.  We also use Deva Curl products to help tame your mane!

We shall see; I was supposed to get a chop done on Saturday but my car Broke down so that got scratched.
Maybe I'll get it chin length, maybe I'll just go half the cut, who knows#

Don't go chin length! I love the last picture that you posted of your hair! Trim some, but keep it long.

lol you sound like my husband :D
he's the "it's your hair, do whatever" type.but secretly despises short hair.
he told me yesterday that he's already had to deal with shrinkage (he took a clump and pulled it  - my hair is at least 3 inches longer when straight.) and would rather I keep it long.

Keep it Long! You are fortunate that your husband told you how much he likes your hair long before you went to the hairdresser! I can't tell you how many times my DH has told me after I cut my hair that he liked it better before! :blackeye:
Also, it is hard to deal with short curly hair in humid climates imho. I think your long hair is pretty! =)

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

An update on product testing.

I got a free sample of Miss Jessie's Jelly curls gel and it works great on my hair. Gives me nicely defined curls and calms down frizz. WIll have to buy when sample runs out  .

I've also been testing Giovanni Tea Tree sulfate-free shampoo, which was recommended on the curly forum. So far I really like the tingling sensation and it seems not to dry out my hair too much. I do have to use a heavy conditioner afterwards. Haven't decided whether to buy a full-size.

I love Giovanni TTO shampoo and I also use their TTO conditioner as well. I also love their smooth as silk shampoo and conditioner. It is very luxurious feeling and leaves my hair silky.

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

Thanks missy for the info. I'm always on the lookout for new stuff. I just checked the smooth as silk reviews on amazon and there is a note about lots of protein in this formula. Not sure whether it'll work for my hair given the disaster I had with coconut oil.

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

You're very welcome Baby Monster. Interesting about the smooth as silk containing lots of protein. My hair seems to like it (feels so good after I use it) and I thought I couldn't do too much protein. Just goes to show how our hair just doesn't like to follow the rules sometimes LOL. It can be so frustrating though. The journey is truly never ending it seems. Good luck with your continued search for your HG.

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

I JUST found out that I can take products back to Sally if they don't work out for me! Sweet, I was getting tired of giving stuff away!
3 more product reviews, short and simple.

1. GVP KPAK- lot of people don't like it because the mineral oil, but no polyquats, no cones, no sulfates and def.no dmdm. I did find that typical of a protein treatment, you need to follow up with a great conditioner to make sure you don't lose moisture.

2. As I Am CoWash: I just wanted to see if it would work differently than my condish. After trying, it does have Quaternium (not poly) but I havent noticed any issues. and it smells SO good. or I just might be weird. :loopy:

3. Garnier Hydra Recharge Leave in: bad!!! I've never had a.leave in conditioner make my hair crunchy. it weighed my hair down SO much that it was borderline straight! then it frizzed and.pillowed out. Horrible!

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

So, I was inspired by the other hair thread and decided to take a picture of my hair today. I'm super happy with it - Giovanni shampoo, L'Oreal Smooth condish and Miss Jessie's Jelly. So thanks to everyone for very helpful suggestions for managing curly hair.

Beautiful hair baby monster! :appl: Just lovely!

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

I've been MIA from this thread for too long! Just got caught up and have several new products to try soon. Kelinas and Baby Monster - gorgeous curls!!!

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

Thanks missy and Rosebloom :wavey:

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

Kelinas thank you for the product updates! It's good to know you are not out more $$ on products! I have spent a fortune this summer experimenting. I don't think I have found my HG yet, but I have found some products that work!

baby monster and Missy, thank you for the info about Giovanni products! I have thought about purchasing the conditioner when my current one runs out.

baby monster, you have thick, beautiful hair! Thank you so much for giving us real life product results! What is it about Miss Jessie's Curls that you like the most as compared to other products? I need to get my hair whipped into shape! :loopy:

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

ClassyRocks, it seems to give me good amount of curl definition without making the hair crunchy.

I am going to add this product to my list this weekend! I can only hope I have as great results as you did in the picture, baby monster! You have such thick shiny hair!

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

High porosity for me- between shamppoing, heating tools, stress and medications.

my hair LURRRRBS protein and oil!

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

just curious on how everyones hair is doing?

Fabbbbbulous for me. Since I this journey 3 months ago, my hair has grown 2 inches (which i think it grew 1 inch but I'm not losing any by split ends!)
My "Warls/cuvy" hair has much more definition, and definitely healthier.

my morning routine is absolutely horrendous- just the sheer amount of work that goes into my hair from the moment I hit the shower but its all worth it now. ,
pic is in negative form to show the pattern :)

has others found their HG yet?

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

Hi Kelinas! That is a very cool picture! Your hair has grown in length and volume. That is incredible for only a couple of months of pampering; you are an inspiration to many!

I have not found a holy grail, but I have found products that are good. I will admit that I have gone back to the darkside. . . .I am using some silicone products. I wash my hair frequently since I exercise on a regular basis, so I do not feel like there is an opportunity for build up.

I recently went back to blow drying my hair with a round brush after letting it rest all summer and early fall. I started to miss the volume and big soft curls. I am trusting that my new very expensive dryer will live up to all its hype and not fry my hair!

Hopefully, the other ladies will jump in her and give us their updates! :wavey:

Re: Please recommend your favorite curly hair styling produc

Kelinas, your hair looks amazing!!! It's so challenging to grow curly hair IMO. Our hair is so darn fragile-at least those of us with fine curly hair...you're doing great!

Classy-I'm glad you are finding some good products! It's hard to use just one with curly hair and having a good rotation of products is always a good thing.

My update-I definitely think my hair is thinning (stress, hormonal changes most probably) but I am making the best of it because I have no other choice lol. I haven't had it cut since July when the hairdresser cut off too much IMO. Here's a pic I just took for you guys. LOL only for PS would I be snapping pics of my hair in my bathroom mirror hehe.
