Hi everyone,
I originally tried getting advice on Reddit but found people actually just enjoy having digs than being helpful! So please be kind
I have found myself in a silly position based on the fact I didn’t do enough research. I am based in the UK and ‘super ideal’ cuts are not widely spoke about - as in if you were discussing a diamond with someone it’s not something you’d know about. Also when deciding on my diamond I thought ‘excellent’ was just that and there was no nuance to it so I knew I wanted a 3 carat, VS2 Basically really badly informed!
So to cut a long story short I looked at around 6 diamonds in person in retail stores in the uk - again had I known the saving online and about vendors such as white flash I just would have gone direct but I didn’t. So I chose the best one I saw. To me, it sparkled and looked a ton better than some of the others. Anyway - when I got my ring I initially chose yellow gold and after a week decided it wasn’t for me and the jeweler switched it to platinum (that point is relevant bear with me!)
Since having this ring it has caused me nothing but anxiety as I have gone down a huge search rabbit hole and learned about the importance of cut etc. I also have learned I could have saved a considerable amount ordering it online but that ship has sailed and I can live with that. What I can’t live with is if I’ve been sold a diamond that is not of good quality, I don’t think the jeweler would have done this intentionally as he has a good reputation where I am from but I think he didn’t inform me properly of what I was buying.
I have since learned they my diamond is what would be referred to as a ‘60/60’ and that these cuts are less desirable and to my mind should therefore cost less? However in some spaces there are people saying it is preference so it doesn’t have a cost implication (not comparing to a super ideal which would obviously be more but to a more ideal cut than mine). I know my diamond has a very clean inclusion map for a VS2 and faces up large - I think the jeweler may have pushed me this way as I was very clear about wanting something that made an impact but realised I wasn’t going to get a 3 carat in my budget so the one I have is a 2.52 with a large ‘spread’ which at the time I thought was positive.
So I guess I am asking if you were me what would you do?
1. Be happy with the diamond I have - although I’ve never compared it to one with a better spec - I won’t be able to see a super ideal now as you can’t just buy them in store so I’d have to order online and don’t have the money to do that now I’ve paid for this one. I’m not a collector - this is an engagement ring and the only one I’ll have I don’t care about the status of the stone I just want it to look the best it can. Am I over thinking it and need to just move on?
2. Speak to the jeweler and express im
Not happy with the cut and didn’t fully understand what I was buying and ask if an exchange would be possible, I don’t see why he would say no to this although i am mindful that I’ve already been a pain with the setting. He has a big inventory.
3. Attempt to get a refund and just start again -
Obviously the most stressful option but maybe I could say I was misold as I was told the cut was the best it could be? Opinions welcome.
I guess to answer these questions you need to see it, if there is a way to upload a video please let me know but I have uploaded some photos - despite the cut is it performing well or not really? I don’t really care about a lab report I’d rather have something that looks beautiful. Please be honest but kind as this is the most expensive purchase I’ve ever made and I feel absolutely awful that I made it so misinformed. I don’t need it to look like a super ideal I just want nice light return - something I now know 60/60 are not famed for! BUT if this is considered pretty good I’ll be happy and move on!
I’ve tried to get it in different light environments, please ignore the bands they’re just cheap from QVC to see what I like! Oh also some of them are screenshots from videos if they are blurry
