Find it fascinating that opals look so different, yet all are opals.

Top: Peruvian, Mexican ‘water’ opal
Bottom: Black, Black, Mexican ‘fire’ opal

I think the left most opal pattern is called “ flagstone,” but not sure. In any case, I love the orange and blue in it. What a wonderful addition to your gorgeous opal ring collection!!!

Hello, all. I love opals and recently got a multi Australian opal ring that is supposed to be genuine, but the middle stone looks a bit... confetti-like to me. I'm not too familiar with Australian opals, and I was wondering if someone could take a look at the photo and tell me what you think? Thank you!!

Synthetic Opals these days are amazingly like natural Opals.
One thing that tends to give them away is the regularity of the “flagstone” pattern. Natural opal in “Flagstone“ pattern is rare and expensive, nature is rarely almost perfect.
If the opals are set in Sterling silver or lower carat (9 or 10kt) gold, that can be an indicator of likely to be created opal. Price is also an indicator, created Opals pieces are normally under $100.
From your photos I suspect that they might be created Opals. One “at home test” is using a UV light. natural Opals fluoresce, created ones don’t but you’d need to check with an experienced jeweller or gemologist to be certain.
If you paid many hundreds of dollars for the ring, it is an issue for you if the opals aren’t natural. So depending on what you paid it might be prudent to get the ring checked and if necessary returned to the vendor for a refund.

Thanks for the reply!!! Yeah, I only payed about $60 for the ring and it is silver filled. I did find some "pits" (?) In parts of the stone when I used my microscope and it's pretty translucent when held up to the light. So I'm still not sure.

Australian solid opal pairs, don’t know if will qualify as black or semi-black, not overly big or expensive but love red/blue colour patterns!



These are meant to be semi-black according to the vendor I worked with before…what do you reckon? Not mine…yet.

My personal preference is for black opals but I think you should pick whatever will look the best against your ears. Like… if you have dark hair and think black opals will disappear against your hair, then maybe the white opals will be better objectively… but I like black opals more, so even though I have black hair I may choose black opal anyway you know? Like I said, personal preference.

Can’t figure out how to classify the pair, definitely not white but tone is still…nowhere near dark?… Might take it down to the Opal cutters if I buy the semi-black pair to see and compare. Again, being a shallow kid worrying more about label than what my eyes like.
