Happy new week all!

Well Marcy and Rod, you will be pleased to know I was very restrained with my homemade bread! It was perfect and I had only a little with real butter on top, I sliced the loaves and have frozen the slices in individual packets, so I can make lower calorie garlic bread on occasion for the Hubby and I.

Anyway, this week as we move further into the new year and our journeys, I was thinking about hunger and being prepared, especially with Mara''s idea we list helpful foods the other week which keep us on track. I know if I am not prepared, I get hungry very easily and then it is so tempting to really go to town on whatever food is available, usually high empty cals! Part of making this journey enjoyable and easy to stick with, is to not allow yourself to get too hungry, eat small meals frequently and to try to be prepared so that your next meal is available. I do best if I eat 5 times a day and I know my hardest times can be mid morning and mid afternoon, so I always need to eat something at these times. So it is very helpful to try to work out when are your danger times and plan accordingly, if it is the evening when you get hungry and the munchies, try to allow some calories to fill this gap, low fat protein is often a good choice, low fat popcorn if quantity is what you crave, sugar free jello or fruit or low sugar hot chocolate if it is a sweet craving, make a list of foods or products which may help you and keep them readily available.

It has taken me a while to feel comfortable with hunger if I am totally honest. All the years I tried to run from it and ignore it had turned hunger into a huge adversary I kept having to fight and often lost against. Nowadays I try to see hunger as a natural feeling to remind me to fuel my body and to not ignore it''s signals until they become unbearable, but to work with and to pay heed to, by eating something that will do my body good. I also have learned not to eat a sugary treat when I am hungry, as in that way I crave more in the worst way, but try to time my treats so that I am relatively stable foodwise and not really hungry or craving anything. That way I find I can stay in control and eat and enjoy one chocolate bar, but not crave more.

So think about being prepared for success. Make sure you are eating frequently enough and are also eating quality calories and enough protein to keep the metabolism ticking over, and also to keep ferocious hunger at bay. Plan for these times by keeping good foods available and junk out of your cupboards, trust me, if you keep these foods closeby, you will have such a hard time saying no to those chips or chocolate, so stock up with nutritious foods which will do you some good.

I have really been concentrating on trying to be prepared with clean and quality foods recently and I must say, I have found it works well for me, as it does for some of the other WWTers! It is so much easier to make good food choices if you are not starving hungry in the first place, so remember to plan ahead so that hunger doesn''t get the upper hand! It is a very useful tool in your journey!

Have a great week all!

Good morning my WWT friends! We are back from our cruise and had a wonderful time! Adam and I worked out every morning on the ship, which was so much fun to get to work out together. We both did the elliptical together and then did the weight machines. We loved it so much that we decided to buy an elliptical machine as soon as we move into the new house, so anyone that has suggestions on a brand, please let me know. I tried to do well eating wise also. Breakfasts were fruit and yogurt and a little scrambled egg for protein. Lunches were hit or miss depending on the excursions we were doing and what was available. Dinners I tried to be pretty good....the first night,I chose one of their "spa meals" which was tilapia with veggies. The other nights were steak (I ate about 1/2 of mine), lobster tail, and pasta (I only ate about 1/3. So not too bad on the entrees, but I did eat dessert every night
6.gif
. But we worked out and walked so much that when I got home, I weighed and didn''t gain anything! Woohoo!
Mexico was awesome....def. did a once-in-a-lifetime experience on our shore excursion. We did a Jeep tour where we drove through Playa Del Carmen to a private beach and had authentic Mexican food. Then we drove to some caverns where we put on life jackets and swam through the cavern. It was really an awesome thing and Adam and I will never forget it. I also learned how to play roulette in the casino and came out ahead, so we actually made money on the trip since everything was paid for by Adam''s company!
I am glad to be back and back into my routine. I ran this morning at 5:45 before Adam went to work and plan to eat really well today. I am really so over sweets right now after eating so many desserts on the trip. Hope everyone has a great day!

Morning Lorelei!!!! Great start to Monday as always Lorelei (love the tips)!!!!!
1.gif
I do like you Lorelei and it really helps to eat 6 meals a day to keep the hunger away. I like doing something light for breakfast, a snack, light lunch, a mid afternoon snack, medium dinner and as a snack before bed berries and yogurt or apple and cheese stick. This afternoon it is suppose to warm up so I will be taking advantage of 40 degree walking weather, thank you very much.
2.gif

I thought it would be great to hear what others do to keep hunger away all day????? Or any other weight loss tips
9.gif

My tips:
8 or 9 glasses of water
eating food w/more fiber (broccoli, apple, pear, beans, or high fiber bread)
eat lots of veggies (carrots, broccoli, celery sticks, cucumber, peas mixed into a lot of dishes, salad)
I do like Lorelei and divide up smaller portions into ziploc's and write calories on bag w/sharpie on bag
small meals through out the day like Lorelei
soups and/or salads once a day
more protein (cheese stick, black beans, turkey rolled w/cucumber slice)
journaling what I eat (it really makes you aware of what you eat all day and assess whether you are getting enough veggies, fruit, calcium, etc)
read, quick walk or garden (or some sort of activity) to distract mindless eating.
post inspirational sayings in my kitchen fridge or bathroom mirror
Post daily on the WWT and read the thread

Have a great day all and wonderful workout!

Great tips, Skippy and thanks for the welcome back. I just finished reading the new issue of Self magazine and they had an article which really hit home with me. I have been struggling as of late to figure out what my "ideal" weight is. While I feel pretty good about where I am, I still feel like I could lose a little bit. The article is all about how to find your happy weight. I did the calculations, and I am only 3 pounds away from what they calculated. I think this is much more reasonable than the 10 pounds I have been trying to lose. It takes into account height, weight, body frame, if you've had children etc. Here is the link if you are interested:

Steph, thanks, oh good; yay for being close to your ideal, you look great in the pics you posted! You do so well so I am curious what helps you through out the day since I am always looking for ideas to keep things fresh yanno, thanks. I did my happy weight and that is what I want to weigh and weighed for 2 years so I know I can do it after I lose what I need to; thanks for the link

Marcy, thought in case you didn't know I would tell you there is a fun knitting thread here

ETA: thanks Steph, oooo gum that sounds good! I will try that, I do a sugarfree jolly rancher from time to time.

Hmmm, I do the same thing that you and Lorelei do...I try to not ever let myself get too hungry so I try to make sure I eat every few hours. Here are the things I do that I can think of now:

Drink lots of water all day long
Try to have lots of protein to keep full longer
gum, gum, and more gum! Adam got me a whole stash for my stocking instead of candy this year. I try to always have some so I am not mindlessly eating.
peppermints also do that same thing for me if I need something sweet after a meal or brushing teeth after a meal so you don''t feel like eating again
go for a walk for a distraction
The biggest thing....tracking what I eat on sparkpeople. It makes it easier to pass on things when I know I have to account for it.

Thanks guys!

Lets see...I try to;

keep my protein up although that can be hard, it does help keep me full for longer
drink 2 litres of water a day
eat 5 or 6 times daily
I also chew gum a lot ( started this when I quit smoking)

morning all!! well i'm pretty much all ready for my trip, just having some breakkie with greg this morning. scrambled egg whites and cinnamon raisin toast, YUM. i also wrapped half the bread to give to our neighbors and greg should finish the rest. thankfully as good as it is, it's so sweet you can't eat too much. however i did consume 2 of the leftover mini cupcakes, figure they are so tiny it's not even as i ate anything...hehee.

i'm taking some sugar free oatmeal, 9 clementines, and some protein wafer bars with me to hopefully snack on during the day in meetings rather than cookies or whatever. however where we are going, they aren't big healthy food people, so it is harder to make good choices. thankfully we have the gym at the hotel so i can do something every night even if it's just a few mile walk or run.

yesterday we were able to get out and do our walk/run. i am running way more than walking now which is great. we did about 35 minutes, probably about 2.75 miles, and portia was such a trooper, she practically drags me to run...so she's got more energy than me and she's so tiny! then she comes home and sleeps for 3 hours. before we went out, i also did some leg ballet moves to help lengthen my legs a little. and some abs. going to do some abs today before i shower and get ready for my flight too.

like lorelei said, i also eat 5-6 times a day....even if it's just 2 clementines or a string of cheese and a cracker. it totally keeps me going...though some days when i know we are having a big meal at night i do a little more saving of my cals, but even then i try not to overeat at night. hate that super full feeling!

my tips for hunger...

the biggest one. drink water. many times you feel hungry or snacky but your body just wants some fluids. so i drink water, or i drink tea. my fave is the original good earth sweet n'spicy, it's like a kicked up cinnamon with crazy flavor. 0 sugars and naturally flavored. you can get it at WF/trader joes/ or even drugstores.

go for a walk or distract myself. sometimes even BAKING or cooking while i am craving something takes my mind off of whatever i was going to eat and onto what i am making. and then you know you take like an hour or whatever to make something so by then you are kind of like, over the original craving. and if i am making a dessert or something, i like many times to wait to eat it.

re: the chewing gum, i used to do this but i found that the chewing sensation didn't really assist me all that much. and then i read in a few magazines that supermodels NEVER chew gum because it causes bloating and they can't have that on the runway and in photo shoots and stuff. and i was like REALLY. and then i thought about it. it introducese so much air into your body...i could totally see it. so because i'm not a mega gum chewer and i hate being bloated (and a lot of times i can tell instantly when i am), i don't chew gum at all anymore. if i need something i might suck on a peppermint lozenge or a candy cane. peppermint also gives a sensation to your mouth that makes you feel more minty so you don't want to go eat anything else after that...which comes in handy.

if i really feel like i need to have something, i will have a 60 cal string cheese. pure protein dose and only 60 cals. and many times it tides me over til dinner or whatever.

so those are my few tips...i actually don't have too many of them as i kind of rebel against that kind of thinking now...because the way i think about it is if i have to have this big arsenal of tricks and tips to KEEP me from eating, that's not how i want to live my life. i used to be more like that, and had like 10 diff ways to get my mind off eating but to me that's more like the food is the enemy and it's not. also i find if i do eat something like string cheese, i really am like well i don't want that cookie anymore because i just ate cheese, which is better for me. so i'd rather eat SOMETHING and have it be nutritious for me and get out of eating a 'sweet' that way. plus sometimes if you are hungry, you're just HUNGRY so you should eat something. esp if you work out a lot like some of us do.

lorelei, yummy on the fresh baked bread!! do you also find when you are involved in baking/making something you want to eat less of it? i almost feel like the making of whatever it is almost fills a 'craving' you know? anyhow, hope everyone is doing FAB. i may or may not check in on the trip, i'll be checking email at night but not sure how tired i'll be....so i may just lurk til coming home on thurs. stay well all and WARM! brrrr.

Mara, have a great trip! I know what you mean about the baking, it makes me feel sort of ''worthy'' and homespun, so yes, that is almost better than eating the result! I will bear that in mind about the gum, it makes sense that it can make you bloated.

HI:

35.gif
ya''ll! Coooolllldddd out there, but went to the gym nonetheless. The pool is busy with acquasize well attended, but the gym has thinnned out. Hope people have not lost their NY''s resolutions yet....

Did my major workout in the pool x 1 hr, then 20 minutes on the TM. Was actually hungry today (often exercise supresses my appetite....) so I had a double cheeseburger and 5 fries.

Enjoy your day folks!!

Great lists!!! I agree you shouldn't be hungry but eating lots of veggies versus pizza is better and is quite filling. Mara stay warm.

I just got back from a 45 min walk, yay!
35.gif
It warmed up to 50 degrees, whoo hoo!

Sharon, yay for the workout; hey Appletini!
Rod, have a great sushi night!

Have a great evening all!!!

We had dinner last night with some new friends (my first experience with Ethiopian food). The food was good but definitely made me smell strange (sorry if that is too much information, but I don''t exactly mean gas, I mean I could smell Ethiopia coming out of my pores this morning). Our dinner companions are runners, so we talked some about running. My 5 miles paled in comparison to the 50 mile run the wife has completed . . . twice! 50 miles! And yes, that''s all at once.

Today I still felt a little sore from my Firm workout Friday night and walk Saturday, so I did a Firm cardio workout instead of weights today. It used 3 lb. weights so it wasn''t nothing weight wise, it just wasn''t much of a muscle workout.

I''m trying to listen more to my body. I''ve started working out fewer days -- maybe 4 a week (when I don''t have strep) -- so I''ve been trying to make those "count" more. As a result, I''m less likely to do a 2 mile run or a less intense Firm video because it doesn''t seem like I''m getting the most out of the time. But if I would work out 6 times a week if I knew it didn''t have to be this all-out crazy workout, then I think that would be more healthy. Working out consistently is something to be proud of, and I shouldn''t be too stringent with myself on what has to count as a workout. I''d like to stick with 3 or 4 days of intense weights videos or long runs, and then 1 to 3 days of short jogs or cardio workouts.

I''m hoping to go for a run tomorrow (first time since 1/5). I''m nervous that I''ll start coughing, but if so, ok, nothing I can do about it. I got fitted for running shoes today and I like the fit better than my old shoes, so I''m excited to try them out. I think that now that I am going on longer runs, I should have nice running shoes just for running and use my old shoes for cardio and weights.

Happy Monday all! I think I have the cold that has been going around the WWT.
14.gif
Last week the HH brought home some Theraflu and Cold from Costco and I made fun of him ("Expecting an ilness are ya?" I believe were my exact words... ). Well now who''s eating those words?!

I haven''t worked out since last Wednesday but I''m maintaining my recent loss so I''m not going to beat myself up about it. Tonight we have to go and do another mystery dinner thing. I swear, I feel like all we do is eat out anymore! (And for all of your saying, oh, ain''t that rough!, believe me those write ups about the meal afterwards are like a college exam!)

Not much else to report...

Happy New Week All!

Just got back from our much needed get away. The student teaching debacle has occupied way too much of my time/brain power lately, so it was great to get away.

We went on an amazing hike on Saturday at Camelback mountain. It's 2,740 feet and towards the end it's all rocks/rock climbing. I was so proud of us for completing the whole thing.

We went to a fabulous rustic Italian restaurant in Scottsdale, Sassi, for dinner that night. We shared frito misto, a caprese salad and dessert (biscotti and a trio of the best gelati I've ever had). It was such an amazing meal, the restaurant knows what it does well and who its clientele is. The service was the best we've ever had.

We just relaxed on Sunday, watched the mighty Chargers lose, wandered around Scottsdale, and had dinner at Elements. It was good but not great (the reviews set the expectation for an amazing meal, and instead it was just good, and a bit overdone (too much of everything and the flavors of the foods got lost in one another)).

I still haven't managed to shake this cold. It comes in cycles and it hit me again last night.
14.gif

It's good to be home.

Mara, hope you have a safe trip.

Marcy, how's the bathroom looking?

Well..........

You won''t have to hear me comment anymore about what a long and tough day Rod had at work anymore. Today, was BLACK Monday for our company and nearly 100 corporate people and 16 offices were ceremoniously shut down today. Charlie and I were BOTH laid off and our office will be closed the end of February. They asked Charlie to stay through February and if he does, he get''s a much longer severance package, so he agreed as we can''t afford to both be incomeless at the exact same time. How''s that for working really hard for the same company for 16 years?? Since I was laid off a year ago and received a huge severance at that time, I got a pretty small one this time. Today was my last official day in the office. So, back into job hunt mode we go. We knew one of us would have to face this as the company is in financial trouble, but we just never figured both of us would be facing this. It sucks, but we''ll be OK.

We still went for sushi and coffee as we figure we should while we still have some income.

Sorry for the shortness of this, but am just not in the mood to write anymore.

Sorry, I did mean to tell Lorelei that's a great opener as usual and I wanted to welcome Steph home and say I was glad you and Adam had a great time on the cruise and didn't gain any weight. If you're going to buy an elliptical, and you can afford it, I'd only consider LifeFitness Machines. Personally, they're the best there is, IMHO.

Steph -- I don''t post much on this thread, but lurk all the time! I love reading everyone''s tips and inspiration every week. I wanted to tell you that I have a Precor elliptical machine and treadmill and I love them! It''s the same brand they have in my gym too. I''ve had the elliptical for about two years now and my husband and I both use it all the time. We haven''t had any problems. I just got the treadmill for Christmas this year and I''ve been thrilled with it as well.

Welll....Rod....since you brought up job loss.....Dh and I are in the same boat as you and Charlie. There, I said it. Long story short: right after New Year''s I was given my "pink slip" from my job because the store owner couldn''t afford to have two full timers after a lackluster December, and DH''s boss is retiring and selling his company and no longer requires his services. DH''s news came exactly one week after mine. We are not entirely shocked about either job loss, but the two together have us reeling and we are having to make major changes in our lifestyle.

Rod, we will just have to keep our chins up and stay positive, and of course commiserate a bit here! I''m so sorry to hear of your news...just as sorry as I am about ours really. DH and I are really trying to look at this as another door opening in life...he had been with his company for over 7 years and things were starting to get a little stale, and I thought I had found my dream job but unfortunately that didn''t work out either, so we''re just taking it one day at a time and focusing on supporting each other and moving forward. You and Charlie have my best wishes and I''m sending positive vibes your way, you''re both talented and valuable individuals and you''ll each find new jobs that you love in no time. Also I hope your sushi was 100% fabulous tonight and I hear you on eating well while you still have income...I''m saving our restaurant gift certificate from Christmas in case we end up down and out, LOL!

Sorry for the threadjack...Mara, stay warm in MN. Lorelei, great opener on thinking about hunger in a positive manner. Steph, glad you had a great cruise! Skippy, 40 degrees sounds downright balmy! Hi Sharon, Appletini, Phoenix, DeeJay, and Kimi! Keep up the great work!

Thanks Skippy, Steph, and Kimberly..........This too shall pass..........

And oh my Monnie.......I''m so sorry about your situation. You had written recently that there were some things happening, but you didn''t elaborate. Leave it to "Open Book Rod" to just pop on out and say what happened today. I''m glad you let us know about you as well. We certainly can commiserate together. And I will remain positive that Charlie and I will see our way through this time and you and your hubby will as well. They say we''re not in a recession, but it sure seems as though we are.

Again Monnie, I''m so sorry to learn about you and your husbands jobs. Let''s definitely stay positive and you need to come here to the WWT and rely on your friends, like I will be doing for friendship and support.

Lot''s of hugs to you both...........

Gosh Rod, I'm so sorry. I'm glad you are able to have such a positive outlook though and I am 100% confident you and Charlie will find other jobs, and most likely jobs you'll enjoy much more than your current ones. Enjoy your sushi!!

oh and Monnie, I hope you and your hubby can both find jobs quickly too. You worked for a jewelry store right? are there other stores in your area that you can work for? around here the stores love to hire people that already have experience so I would think you'd be able to find something similar???

Hey everyone! I can''t believe we are 3 weeks into January already!!! How is everyone?

I am still doing my WW points, but the last few days I went over the usual 25 points, but not my too much, but I feel like I have gotten into that snacking mode again or grabbing "just 1 french fry" mode. I really have to get out of that, and if I do snack, make it smart snacks, fruits and or veggies. I started working out again tonight. Today was the first day I hardly coughed, so it''s 3 weeks I was sick!!! I started out slow with the work out, I did 1 mile on the treadmill, but it was a very slow mile AKA 30 minute mile. I am 2lbs away from my first goal, so I really am excited to get to it, but I am still taking it slow and I am giving myself time, about .5-1lbs a week. I hope the working out helps, I haven''t working out in maybe 2 months.

Anyway, I hope everyone has a fabulous week!

Rod and Monarch, OMG, when it rains, it pours! I'm sure it's little consolation, but you both seem to have very positive perspectives and are obviously qualified for many jobs. The trick will just be finding the right job for you and your other half, for which I send some PS fairy dust your way.

Yeesh, life is "funny" sometimes, isn't it?
