I got up this morning, was a little lazy, go dressed at the last min to run to muscle hour. The garage did not open
32.gif
; I think it doesn't like the cold since it is in the 20's. Hubby is trying to get the garage door to open; if it does I will just use the machines over at the gym since I can't walk into muscle hour late (no equip, no steps, too many people in the class to begin with). Oh well, maybe it is time for a new opener, we wouldn't want an emergency where we can't get out of the house.

Tomorrow my friend and I are going to go see 20something Dresses. I might be going to Lowe's w/hubby. I am not sure what we are doing today. I have to return some cute shoes I bought for our trip to Paris/Barcelona because they don't really fit; I was bummed out because the 7 is too big and the 6 is snug. I thought they would be great because they are waterproof, oh well.

Mara, your meal sounded great and yay for getting clothes altered! Have fun at your party.

Rod, I totally think you should sleep in; when I was work 55-60 hr weeks at my firm I would look forward to sleeping in!!!! I was exhausted come the weekend so that was my time to re-energize for sure! Enjoy your morning on the terrace and workout!!

Marcy, I am betting you all are colder then us! How was teaching your friend to knit or sew (sorry I forgot which one)?? You are always so sweet! Gosh, I can't believe you were out doing an astronomy meeting in the cold; hope you were bundled up!!!

Mrs. Salvo, have a wonderful hike with Zoe!!!

ETA: Lorelei, yay for weights w/hubbers!!!

Have a great weekend all

jas, congratulations! And being healthy is such a great gift to give to your baby! I read in my running book that runners (and presumably all exercises) have babies with 10% less body fat on average than non-runners. I wonder if that translates into those babies turning into slimmer adults as well.

CrownJewel, I'm no expert, but I don't aim for muscle soreness after weight-training. At a certain point, you have to stop increasing your weights, right? At that point, I figure the goal is muscle maintenance, not muscle building. I tried increasing my weights and started getting back pain, so I decided I was pushing myself too much.

Mara, have you gone to the doctor? I convinced myself that I just had a cold, but I didn't (well, I obviously have a cold too because I have congestion and a cough, but that wasn't my main problem). I kept remembering the last cold I had, where I was discomfitted for maybe a day or two, and just had to work out light a couple more days after that. But I didn't lose my voice that time or have to miss work or feel like crap day after day. When the doctor finally called a week later to tell me I did have strep, I was so relieved (but also frustrated that I'd been trying to suck it up for a week and still go to work and work out if I could, which I really couldn't) I cried.

OK, so yay for antibiotics! After about 36 hours I felt like someone recovering from a cold, not someone feeling just as crappy day after day with no end in sight.

Yesterday after work I did a Firm video, and this morning I walked 3.2 miles in 46 minutes. It's not the glorious 5 mile run in under 50 minutes I did two weeks ago, but I know running would just aggravate my cough and congestion. And not only have I not worked out much for two weeks, but I've been run down with an illness, so I know I need to ease back into my normal routine.

But I can't tell you how happy I am to be able to live life normally except with tissues and cough drops in my purse! It reminds me what a blessing health is. Sometimes working out starts to feel like a drag, but not being able to do it when I wanted to reminded me to be thankful for the opportunity.

I'm thinking about entering a 10k this spring. An organization I sponsor at school is going to try to get a bunch of students to sign up to win money for charity. So if I am sponsoring a bunch of kids entering the event, I should do it too, right? The other sponsor ran it last year, so we'll probably do it together. Wouldn't it be fun to see your teachers jogging? And I think it would be a good example for the students to see adults who exercise.

The funny thing is that in the past when I was out of shape the other sponsor would tell me we should jog together, and I'd say, no, no, I can't jog. This time she said I'd have to slow down because she couldn't run faster than a 10 minute mile.
1.gif
I don't think I could run 6.6 miles faster than a 10 minute mile without some serious training anyway, but I guess she remembered when I reported running 2 or 3 miles in under 9 minutes per mile.

PG...I thought about the DR but I just know that stuff is hugely going around. My neighbor had strep which put her down for the count for 3-4 days with a horrible fever, sore throat, etc. Mine is not that bad at all. My fever was gone the first day, I don't have a sore throat..I don't even sound sick. So I don't think it's the strep that's going around. If I don't feel better tomorrow I might call the DR and see if I can go in to the urgent care just to be sure...but I think it'll be okay. I just feel tired and a little out of it. Don't have a fever, want to sleep a lot but actually pretty functioning. No more chills or aches at all. But thanks for suggesting it, I was afraid I'd get that bad strep because it has put people down for the count for like 3 days and I was like I don't have that time!!

And yeah being sick makes you totally appreciate being better. Argh!!

You should totally do the 10k. I did a run/walk one last year and it wasn't bad at all. I split it up running and walking and finished in I think 1 hour 30 minutes. Something like an 12 minute mile when all was said and done. Not bad for only running about 3 of the 7 miles.

Oh and re muscle soreness, I always feel sore after working out with my trainer. And it's not that we have to increase weights to get it...but rather if you are doing things the right way, and enough reps to burn the muscle a bit, even with a slightly lower weight, you will feel sore the next day (or should at least)...to me that's how I know I'm actually working! Doesn't have to be debilitating but more like 'yeah I worked that out yesterday'.

Lastly, re: the whole fitter people fitter baby thing, I did see some stat in an article recently where they said along the same lines, the more healthy weight and lower body fat people are gearing their kids up for having a leaner and lower body fat life. That higher fat parents actually could have kids who struggle more with weight in the future. Definitely motivation to stay lean if you are thinking of procreation...I'd hate to think I was setting up my poor kidlet for potential obesity or weight troubles from my love of Oreos and chocolate...wah.

Hi everyone. Well we went shopping today at Bed and Bath then Lowes buying things to finish the bathroom. Holy cow! It’s a good thing I can shift my car and house payments to the next check. For a tiny bathroom I’m finding this remodeling to be pricey. After we got home I went to the mall and then grocery shopping. I made supper when I got home and now I am contemplating starting laundry. I bought us a little cake to split for a treat tonight. It has nuts and is chocolate so I figure my DH can use a treat after all his hard work on the bathroom.
Lorelei, that is wonderful your workout was quicker today. You’ll be zipping through it soon.
Mara, minus 13 is a lot colder than here so I feel for you girl. I’m getting used to the 20’s being our high for the day but you aren’t used to it at all so you’ll be cold. I am glad you got some nice warm clothes to take with you. That’s terrific your altered clothing turned out so well. I will keep that in mind since I bought some decent clothes this winter that I may want to keep. The cupcakes sound great. I have a recipe for snickerdoodle cake and it’s yummy.
Skippy, rats for having problems getting the garage door open. I hope your husband gets it fixed. Our spring broke one time and the door slammed back down – that was a very loud and scary noise. I left my DH a message and he called and inquired about the car – he claims he knew I was okay since I called him but I teased him he was more worried about the car than me. Tee hee. I taught my friend to knit and she is doing great with it. I did bundle up for the meeting last night.
PhoenixGirl, I am glad the antibiotics helped you get better. That would be great if you signed up for the 10K to run with the kids.
Well, take care and have a great evening.

Hey there........

We woke to a super foggy morning, so no breakfast on the terrace. We actually enjoyed (as did the kitties) having our coffee, scone and fresh fruit in front of the TV and we lounged around for a very leisurly morning. In fact, I don't think we left the house till nearly 2 PM. But we still had lunch at our little Saturday deli, then coffee at Starbucks. Of course we then hit the gym, but it was almost 4 PM when we did and we did our usual and full workout, so we didn't leave the gym till nearly 7 PM. Today, was the Gasparilla Childrens parade, which actually goes right by our condo on Bayshore. It's bedlam when the parade begins, so we chose to not be home when that was going on. Next weekend it will be even worse, as it's the adult Gasparilla parade, but we may actually stick around for that one. Unfortunately, the cold front decided to hit Tampa mid-way through the parade and the city had to cancel it and send everyone home as we were under tornado warnings. It's the first time in the cities history, this parade didn't get to conclude. Anyway, since it was pouring when we left the gym, we just went across the street to the Wine Exchange and had dinner. I had cream of spinach soup for an appetizer and a nice caesar salad with grilled chicken, shrimp and scallops, which was just yummy. Charlie had fried tilapia, which was also really good. After dinner, we stopped off for a cup of coffee, but no frozen yogurt. It was just a bit too damp and chilly for us to be in the mood for fro-yo. Tomorrow, is supposed to be a nicer day weather wise, but only be in the low 60s'. which for Tampa is pretty chilly. Anyway, that was our Saturday............

Marcy, home remodeling projects have a way of getting expensive for sure. But, I'm betting your bathroom will be absolutely beautiful when done. I hope you and hubby enjoyed your chocolate cake!

You keep on posing Lorelei!! And just you wait. If you and hubby keep the weight routine up, you're going to see an amazing difference!!

Mara, I'm sorry your cold is lingering. Yay for being happy about how the clothes alterations turned out. I'm sure it's going to be a major shock to be in such cold temperatures next week. I hope you're taking enough heavy and warm clothing with you.

Sorry your garage door wouldn't open Skippy. I hope your door has an emergency release, like all automatic garage door systems are supposed to have? Anyway, I'm sorry it made you miss muscle hour.........

I'm glad the anitbiotics are doing the trick for you Phoenix. And I'm also sure that staying active like you have done, stimulates your immune system along the way!

I guess that's about it. I't now after 11 and I think I'll watch a few minutes of the news and then maybe some Saturday Night Live or Mad TV before heading to bed. I hope you all had a really great Saturday!!

hey wwt! hope everyone is having a good weekend. mine's been great so far...the party friday night was fun, and i stuck to good choices, yay. saturday was too cold to ride, so i went to the gym instead. i RAN (!!!) for 12 minutes on the track, then did 30 minutes on the elliptical. i was actually surprised that i was able to run that long. food was oatmeal, egg whites, and banana for breakfast, luna bar for "lunch" before the gym, hot cocoa and graham sticks after the gym, and annie's mac and cheese with tuna and broccoli slaw for dinner. late-night dessert was a small square of dark chocolate and 6 almonds.

so far today i've had more oatmeal, egg whites, and banana for breakfast. we are planning some house cleaning and i will also hit the gym later this afternoon. other than that, i just want to avoid being outside cause it's so cold!

my ankle is a bit sore today from the running, so i'll just do the elliptical today and let it rest. i'll try some running again later in the week.

have a good one!

woaaah nellie! morning WWT''ers....this is butterball mara checking in for sunday morning.

seriously, i think that the near starvation diet (sans oreos) i was on during my cold (think campbells old fashioned chicken noodle, english muffins and clementines for 2.5 days) has addled my brain. i am eating like a crazy person.

yesterday morning we went to breakkie at that new place and YUM. amazing challah french toast. egg white omelet. TASTY. then i don''t know why but i was like well lets go into this bakery a few blocks up, we have lived here for 4 years and never really bought anything from them, that''s just crazy. so i got a few cookies to try out, a coffee cake slice for monday and then ... the crowning glory, the cinnamon raisin bread they are so famous for.

of course had to eat the cookies yesterday. AND then we had a party at a friend''s where i consumed multiple feta and carmelized onion puff pastry appetizers. the food was yummy..lots of protein. and then multiple mini cupcakes (cut in half though so we could sample all 6 flavors)...that were AMAZING. and worth the $50.

so this morning i was going to make us french toast with the cinny raisin bread but i thought holy crap i need some protein. so i made egg white scrambles (regular for greg with lots of extra cheese) and then toasted the bread. and this isn''t really bread. it''s like bread pudding made into bread form. friggin amazing. and i am glad i am leaving tomorrow for 4 days so that greg can consume the rest of the loaf in my absence, therefore saving me from eating it myself.

then tonite we are going to try this new pizza place, we''ve been waiting for it to open like the other place, it''s a sit down new york pizza place where you can also get slices. in CA this stuff was NOT popular til the last year or so. you could almost only ever find deep dish or regular crusts. now NY style pizza is all the rage. so we have one fave place about a 30 min drive from here but this place is up the street literally so if we like it, we''ll be so jazzed.

so yeah this wkd is just a BUST in terms of eating anything other than SUGAR ...well thankfully i am eating a lot of protein too. did a mini workout yesterday at home and then greg and i did a 45 minute brisk walk with portia. and today we are going to try to do a walk run for 3m if it doesn''t rain out, it''s looking glum. and i have to finish packing and get ready for tomorrow, yikes.

lol rod re: enough warm clothing...what constitutes enough in -13 weather? i don''t think that i could wear enough!! but yeah i am bringing whatever i can that i think can work for sure. tall knee length heeled black boots. tights for under the boots and pants. multiple sweaters. my huge coat. a big huge gray pashmina shawl for a scarf. multiple scarves. gloves. hat. so we''ll see. hopefully i''ll be mostly there. and also we won''t be spending hardly any time outside thankfully. the office and entry doors and all that is pretty close to where you park.

anyhow, i guess i should continue doing my massive laundry thing and start packing. happy sunday all. wish me strong will to resist cinnamon raisin bread for the rest of the day at least!!! (and the 3 leftover mini cupcakes i hoarded from last nite!)

Not too many posts today, so I guess everyone's still out being "active!!" We had a great Sunday. It was really chilly when we woke up this morning. It was in the 40's, which is certainly cold for us. So like yesterday, we enjoyed breakfast in the great room with either HGTV or the Food Channel while we read the paper and had our scone, fresh fruit and coffee. Oh and of course the kitties so enjoyed having warm laps to sleep on! Then we did some household things we needed to do, before heading out for lunch at Panera, coffee under the oak (it did climb into the high 50's, so we were dressed for sitting outdoors), which was just terrific. Then we hit the gym around 3 and it wasn't crowded at all, so we just sort of kept going and going and I managed to push some muscles to exhaustion, which is a good thing. I have grown in my biceps and upper chest and I've also noticed that the growth somewhat limits mobility. It's kind of funny, that I can't reach around the back of my neck as easily as I could when I had no muscles.........LOL The guy who dropped the 55 lb., dumbell on his foot was there on crutches. So, we chatted for a while. He was really grateful that I helped him when he was in so much pain. And he did take my advice and go to the emergency room, which was a good thing as he did break 3 toes, one of them in multiple places. He's seeing a foot specialist and should make a full recovery. It's even amazing that just a couple days after hurting himself so badly, he was back in the gym. Of course he can only work on his upper body as anything involving the legs/feet is definitely out.

We had such a terrific dinner at home tonight. We bought some fresh Atlantic Salmon and baked it with all sorts of terrific seasonings. Then we sauteed some fresh mushrooms and fresh spinach in EVOO (that's Rachel Ray speak for Extra Virgin Olive Oil) and used the mushroom/spinach topping on the fish. So fantastic and simple. We also had fresh silver queen corn (sweet and crackly) and a multi-grain roll with a heart healthy spread. For dessert, we split a piece of blueberry coffee cake we picked up at Panera earlier. It wasn't low fat, or sugar free and we enjoyed every little morsel. To top our evening off, I mentioned the Gasparilla Children's Parade being cut short last night, and they always end the parade with a fireworks display in the bay. And since last year would have been our first one since we had just moved in the condo, we missed it as we were in Raleigh. SO..........we got to stand on our balcony and watch one of the most amazing firework displays under a fool moon, right from our balcony while dinner was cooking. SO SO SO amazing. Yet another reason we never want to take for granted the wonderful place we live...........

Sounds like you had a very active Saturday SB. Glad you had fun at the party and woo hoo for following up a run with the elliptcal. Good idea to give your ankle a rest if it was hurting a bit.

I hope the Pizza place was fun Mara. I'll be thinking of you this week in the cold! I know you'll work out in the hotel gym and be a model healthy citizen in the frozen tundra!!

So Lorelei, you make Carrot Cake and Raisin Bread!! When are you sending some my way. I love them both!!

I guess that's about it. Tomorrow starts another "fun" week of work - NOT! At least we kick off the week with Sushi on Monday evening!!

Sleep well everyone and have a great beginning to the week!

I have been writing down what I ate this past week and stayed in my calorie range, yay. Yesterday I did Kathy Smith's Lift Weights to Lose Weight 2 using the legs portion. We had lunch w/a friend and bought some udon noodles from the Asian Grocery Store for dinner tonight. Hubby is making dinner. I went and saw 27 Dresses w/my friend and that movie is soooo cute!!!! Loved it and highly recommend it to any chick flick lover!

Yay for staying in your calorie limits this week Skippy. And Yay for working out with weights too. You know how important I think weights are for a total fitness program!! In answer to your question about Gasparilla, here is a little information:

The three-day festival, held in January, is one of the country''s largest and most unique outdoor celebrations. The celebration begins when the massive black-hulled pirate ship, "Jose Gasparilla", named after the pirate who sailed around the Florida coast in the early part of the century, invades Tampa. The ship measures 165 feet length with three 100-foot masts, and is the only fully rigged pirate ship in the world.

With pirate flags flying and cannons thundering, the ship and its crew of 700 is towed by tugs along Hillsborough Bay followed by hundreds of participating boats and krewes. The Captain and his Krewe debark and capture the city - with very little resistance - and then share their wealth in unpirately fashion by throwing doubloons and beads to the crowds.

Tonight''s fireworks display was sponsired by Red Barron Pizza and is suppoed to be one of the nations largest firework''s displays and I must admit it was simply amazing!!

All of this happens right in front of our condo on the waterfront!!

Hi everyone. What a weekend! I’ll be glad to go back to work tomorrow. I’ve been to Lowes, Home Depot and Bed and Bath so many times they should know my name by now. My DH is almost finished with the bathroom remodel. I was the “go-fer” running back and forth getting things and returning things. All he has left to do is putting the piece down between the bedroom carpet and the tile floor. I spent the last 90 minutes picking up and vacuuming – it’s so nice to have some order again. Yippee.
On one of my shopping trips my mom went with me so we stopped at Dillards. I bought a red wool coat they had for 50% off.
Rod, it sounds like you had a great weekend in spite of the cool and rainy weather. We are expecting 2 – 5 inches of snow tonight with highs tomorrow of 5. I went and bought smaller sized long johns today – the one’s I wore last week were huge on me. We did enjoy our little pieces of chocolate cake. I made “brownie” points since the frosting has some coffee flavored drizzles on it. My DH loves his coffee. Gasparilla sounds fun and how cool to top it off with some great fireworks. I love to watch and photograph fireworks.
Shortblonde, sorry to hear your ankle was sore after your great workout. I hope it gets better.
Mara, ha ha to butterball. It is a good sign you’ve regained your appetite. I picked up some clementines yesterday they are so good. Your bread sounds wonderful. We go to a bakery in a nearby city that has a cinnamon swirl bread that is awesome but I eat way too much of it. Have a save trip and stay warm.
Lorelei, I can smell your fresh baked bread now. Of course I’d have to eat some with lots of butter melting on top.
Skippy, yay for staying in your calorie range. I have been doing really well this week except I am sure I went over a little today. I ran around enough that I’m hoping I didn’t do any damage. I am glad you enjoyed the movie. I like chick flicks too. I would agree with you that bathrooms and kitchens are probably the most expensive to remodel. We bought our house new 12 years ago so it’s time to start doing some upgrades. I think the next big project is new carpet. My husband bought enough tile for the guest bathroom but he said the only way that bathroom tile is getting done is if we hire some one to do it. He was not a fan of laying tile.
Well I am off to bed. Take care and I’ll “see” you in next week’s thread.
