Id really like a AVC probably. I know I should go round for sparkle and fire but I just cant do it, its too average, I crave something different. I guess thats what lead my hear

Having had an AVC (and traded it in for an OEC), I'd say that if you want lots of fire, go for an OEC or an AVR. AVCs are *gorgeous* but not as fiery as the round cuts. The AVC is just beautiful to look at for the big facets, the cross in the middle, etc. They also throw off incredible pastels, but not exactly super fire.

If I were in your situation, and I can easily imagine myself there, I would try to sell the pear for a reasonable price, and take my time doing it. Then take that money, save up some money on top of it, and get help from the awesome old cut experts here in finding a great OEC or OMC. It will be unique, fiery, and hopefully within budget.

Or, you may just fall back in love with your pear in a little time ::) Don't judge it under ugly office lights. Actually, when I'm at the office, my diamond looks best in the restroom. Something about the lighting... well, let me just say that I love going to the bathroom to admire my stone ;))

Like, thinking of getting rid if my ring make me so sad but thinking of looking at it and being disappointed every day because of the sparkle makes me sad too.

Maybe i just have to get one of those lights. There was one at the bed bath and beyond I saw that said "natural sunlight spectrum"... that might have been the light you were talking about. My ring did loop pretty good in it though it was like $35. but I guess thats less money than starting from scratch.

As others have indicated, clean your diamond daily. I found that my well cut 60/60 turned dull in just a couple of days of wearings, and I expect your pear will do the same. Also, my ISEE2 round brilliant has perfect cut, and it doesn't shoot fire in the office at all. Well, it is quite sparkly in the elevator, because there a lots of spot lighting in there, just like at the jewelers. But, I can't spend my day riding the elevator.

I would hate to see you lose a lot of money trading in diamonds, only to find that even the best cut stone doesn't shoot firey sparkles in the lighting where you live. I would suggest getting a round diamond with a good return policy and checking it out before committing to a trade-in.

Nielseel... I'll risk this suggestion -- maybe you're just feeling down in general? Maybe take a few days before making any decisions on this stone?

Also, what makes me feel happy about my stones sometimes is having some "quality time" with them. That includes cleaning them, but also spending time admiring the stones in *very good* lighting, like near a shady window in sunny the afternoon, when the stones go crazy reflecting all kinds of beautiful colors. Or in the evening in mixed lighting that brings out the fire. Seriously admiring the stones for a good time, which (ok, call me crazy), I feel, makes the stones "happier" :cheeky: I also know the conditions that make the diamond vulnerable, and I don't judge the stones harshly in that light. Don't wanna be mean to my darlings ;))

Dreamer, I dont know if i have unrealistic expectations or not. There is a seating area at my work that has those lights they use in jewelry stores. I say under it for lunch today to look at my ring. It sparkled, a lot, but thats really just about the only time I see any color in my flashes, besides a perfectly sunny day right next to the window. Other than that its just white flashes.

That is normal. Diamonds only show fire when there is a certain type of light. Bright sunlight, high potlights. You see colors in filtered daylight, such as under a leafy tree on a sunny day. Otherwise, white light is the norm. I think you will always be disappointed if you want a diamond that shows fire in other lighting than the two you mention. You will get different optics with another cut, but there are constraints on how diamonds can refract light.

yeah this thread is making me think its just my expectations that is the problem. Sounds like i just have to get one of those sunlight lamps.

No offense there; Quite possible you are right. I removed the listing, like I said I think everyone is right and I had too high expectations. I mean comparing it to the pears on here it stacks up with the best of them (not in size of course ) and it does have a lot of flashes, just not really much in the fire department unless im in certain areas. i have actually been cleaning it like a mad woman every night before bed just to make sure nothing hinders the already sub par light return. ( I actually stashed a baby tooth brush in my makeup bag in case of emergencies. haha ) I am really not sure why I keep going back and forth on this, I really think its beautiful and everyone tells me it fits my personality, so im not sure why I just cant say "its pretty im set now move on"

I do these things too.

I found that when I had spent more on my ring than I was comfortable with I was very perfectionistic about it. Now that I found my old cut in a lovely mount, for a price I am happy with, I am not critical of it. My point: expectations and a critical eye can reflect your own psychology too! So figure out why your ring is bugging you and try to fix that before rushing headling into another ring.

You very well might prefer a different cut. But make an informed and well thought out choice. And until then, perhaps get to know your pear better.

I second the GE Reveal bulb. I have a combo of those and regular in my bathroom chandelier and the fire in there is INCREDIBLE! I almost never want to leave! Also second keeping it clean. Not sure where you live, but our water has a ton of minerals that leave deposits so I scrub it with a toothbrush and then rinse in distilled water. Incredible shine and fire after that! :)

sorry to hear :(

I don't know much about pear so i can't comment on its ASET but i do love the shape! i've seen pears that are either too fat or too short. your's is just right!

I think it is important that you rank your criteria (fire, brilliance, shape etc... ) and expect some trade off, e.g. if you love the shape of a pear, it's not going to be as sparkly as a RB.

Best of luck Nielseel. Keep us updated on how it goes and what you decide.

I think your ring is elegant and stunning. It very well could be the light. I have a cushion and sometimes the sparkle in incredible and sometimes...eh. If it is super clean, it is great. I would definately live with it for 6 months or so and maybe when you feel like you don't love it, add some sparkly stackers with colored stones..it may set off the sparkle of the pear.

If it did look that good in that lighting, then I'd think it'd be a good investment! Also, when I need fall in love with my ring I just take it to our jeweler to get it steamed cleaned (which doesn't cost anything) and seeing it clean in the jewelry store lighting always makes me happier.

I sense the same as what GemFever stated. I don't think it is the diamond; it is beautiful as other have confirmed. I wish you could take some time away from PS. I really love this community of jewelry lovers, but I think it is healthy to enjoy other pastimes too. There are some great stories about how members have found the diamond of their dreams . . . sort of a Cinderella story. I love reading them!
Having said that, I really enjoyed my vacation this Fall which kept me too busy to play on PS! I really appreciated how wonderful my fancy shaped diamonds along with my new RBC are! It's so easy to second guess ourselves, especially when on PS daily IMHO. I believe other members have echoed the same sentiment about stopping diamond shopping, comparing, etc. I love fancy shapes, so fire is not a great motivating feature for me. I like having different, yet classic jewelry . . . your ring falls into that category! :wavey:

Take the pear off the bezel.
Some years ago I bought a bezel pendant and small bezel studs: at the time I chose bezel over prongs in order to increase the modest dimensions of my diamonds, but I was never satisfied with them because they didn't sparkle as much I expected...until I got them reset with prongs...

I have a pear as well and I wear it with a 5 stone RB band. The band sparkles like crazy and my pear sparkles but not the way the rb stones do but they are not the same. I found that I need to clean my ring daily in order to keep my pear sparkling.

nielseel,

There are four pages of photos of that Lynda ring and there are videos on pages 2 and 4. If you think you are interested, talk to Grace or Erica. They are wonderful people to deal with.

The Reveal bulb is not the same thing as the natural light thing. I have an OttLite (name brand natural light, which is great for seeing the true color of fabrics) and it is way too bright. I seldom see a bow tie in my oval, but if I stick it under the OttLite, there it is. Get an inexpensive desk lamp of some sort that uses regular light bulbs. Reveal bulbs are less than $8 for a pack of two for three-way bulbs, and even less than that for 60 watt or vanity or ceiling fan size.

Try a Reveal bulb in one of your lamps at home. If you like what it does for your diamond, get a lamp for your office. I have Reveal bulbs in my kitchen ceiling fan and over my bathroom mirror and my diamonds sparkle like crazy in both those places.

It's an inexpensive thing to test, and if it doesn't help your diamond, you'll still have a nice, usable light bulb.

I have to say, I got the JewelJet steam cleaner and nothing *quite* cleans it like that thing (including the ultrasonic that I also purchased)... my diamonds look their absolute best after a steaming. It's $99, so while I understand you don't want to throw more money at this, $99 is not a lot in the grand scheme.

What about purchasing the matching Ritani eternity (or 3/4) band to wear with your ring and up the fire ante that way?

All that being said, I tried those things myself to no avail (including halo'ing it *and* pairing that with an eternity). I practically tortured myself over it (and DH too) for a couple of years, also considering if something else in my life was lacking and I was projecting, wondering if anything would ever make me happy and being told nothing would, etc. etc. Once DH told me to figure out what you really want and then just do it, and I did it, all the angst went away. I wasn't projecting, I could be happy, and I was/am! There really was a diamond out there for me; instead of trying to force the one I had to work, I just needed to find the one I'd really love. Everyone is different, but I hear so much of myself in your posts that I want to share how my journey turned out.

I think Im going to buy a desk light for wok (sense It really is the worst light in the world at my work ) and see if that works, Maybe Ill have to replace all the lights in my house too haha.

And In a year or two if I still am sad about it then Ill be able to get a new one and Ill just wear it as a RHR or a pendant

Honestly hanging out here is part of the problem. There are soooo many beautiful diamonds. It took me a while to settle on the one that
works for me after several false starts. Really I could add to my collection. This is a dangerous place!!!

Oh YAY!!! All sounds like good ideas to me!! :appl:

Truth is that even for the most perfect RB, diamonds are disappointing to me. After lurking on this site and going crazy about diamonds, I expected them to walk, talk and chew gum at the same time. None of them does. After you check them out in all lightings, then thats what they ALWAYS do in those different lightings.
PS can make one think these things are popping lights every second and doing different dances all the time. Disappointingly for me, they don't.

I'm sorry your not thrilled with your ring. I agree with others, your pear is beautiful. Unfortunately, the faceting pattern in the pear shape will not give the fire of other cuts such as a round brilliant.

My first ring was a pear also. Like you, I wanted to be different. I got what I wanted at the time but it didnt take long for me to wish I had something else. I will add that my pear was not near the same quality as yours...again, it is a beautiful pear :wink2: Changing my ring was not really an option at the time as finances were very limited. I had my pear for 18 years before my recent upgrade. I always knew that we would upgrade it, but it took a LONG time...expenses of kids, home, etc...

I can understand getting a desk lamp if your office has poor lighting. I agree that diamonds look different in all lighting environments, some bettter than others. However, you should be happy with your diamond's performance in MOST lighting environments. In all the places I have observed my diamond the only two places I have found where it doesnt "dazzle" me are the kitchen at night and the half bath. Are you happy with it most of the time?

I recommend that you give it more time. Really pay attention to it when you are out and about and how it performs in all those different environments. If you are still not happy, you can either live with it until you can upgrade or get something different now. I would probably hold off for an upgrade. I would hate to sell the ring at a loss. Over time it will become more and more sentimental as you wear it. You could put the pear into a pendant, add a colored gem to the setting, and get a new wedding ring...that way you will have 3 sentimental pieces to pass down to future generations:-)

Lastly, lurking around on Pricescope can be fun yet dangerous. You see everyone else's beautiful rings and it is only natural to second guess your decision. I admit I have second guessed myself plenty of times...it is easy to think "maybe I should have done something like that for my ring???" Get the ring that is perfect for YOU, that fits your tastes and lifestyle.

I was gonna say the same thing about hanging out on Pricescope......................

The bolded is my advice as well! But take a little time to figure it out so you get it right.

My other advice -- don't talk to your husband about this ;)) Save the angst for PS, who understand. Your husband will just get upset. I recommend never talking about jewelery issues with your husband until you have reached a decision about what you want to do that you are at peace with. THEN present to him your plan and discuss the logistics. But do not throw all the angst at him, there is no joy to be gained there. I speak from experience ::)

Yeah, PS can be a little dangerous for some of us - there are so many beautiful jewlery pieces on here, so many reminders of different options available, so many large stones, different shapes...it's hard sometimes not to second-guess yourself. And for some of us PS emphasizes that one little thing that might eat at us a little about our stone...for you it's sparkle, for me it's size. I really love my diamond, but sometimes I wish it was just a *leeedle* bit bigger. I keep telling myself I'm going to take a break from PS for a bit, but I always find myself wandering back. What's that line from Godfather 3? "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!" :D

But seriously, I'm sorry to hear you're not loving your ring Nielseel. Everyone has offered good advice so there's not much more for me to say - I agree with others to keep your ring really clean and realize that diamonds don't look fantastic in every lighting situation. I say don't do anything rash, live with it for a while, and if you're still feeling the same way after a period of time I guess you should look into changing it.

It really is a beautiful ring - I love the finger coverage and how it looks on your hand.

It really is a GORGEOUS ring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did you say what your wedding band will be?

Also I think i posted it high because a part of me really does not want to get rid of it, I just wish I could wave a magic wand and it be sparklier

I WAS really happy with it wasnt I? Gah I dont know. I contacted DBL and see if they would take it on trade. I have always loved this ring

Hi Nielseel, sorry to hear that you're not in love with your pear :(

The video clips for this ring are on the 3rd and 4th pages of pictures.

Good luck with your search!
