Hello all! I'm new to this forum and so glad to have found this thread! All the beautiful stones you all have posted are truly inspiring! My wife took a flyer on an online sale on this ring listed as "probably Star Sapphire" (apologies for the multiple image post I couldn't figure out how to post the vendor image correctly)

We received it the other day and I took some shots of it today. This is our first star so we'd appreciate any input you more experienced folks might have! 1692404273771.png 20230818_182532.jpg 20230818_180315.jpg 20230818_180301.jpg 20230818_182858.jpg 20230818_183034.jpg 20230818_183155.jpg

Welcome to the forum!

This looks like a lab or diffused stone, IMO. Search the web on 'synthetic star sapphire' or 'diffused star sapphire' for comparisons. Nothing wrong with that, of course, as long as you paid an appropriate price - synthetics are just as hard-wearing as natural stones (they are sapphire), and the stars are just as fascinating.

I just found this for sale on E-Bay. Mickey Cohen's (former mob boss) 20ct star sapphire pinky ring. I love the star. Is that considered a double star? Regardless, it's a beauty. Screenshot 2023-10-21 9.11.16 PM.png

Love this! The bottom pic is so ethereal. It shows the 'silver curtain' - the star seems to penetrate into the stone.

I doubt that this is a double star, merely the result of two strong lights - you can see multiple lights reflected from the surface. Each light makes its own star. Here is the classic example - three lights, three stars:
I caught a triple star!

Love your ring -- but that guy on eBay has dozens of things like this with hyperbolic language, shaky provenance, and poor documentation, etc. I would never buy from this person. There was another thread about this.

I just read in the eBay listing about this mob boss.
The cats eye chrysoberyl ring that he has listed does look like the same one on Micky Cohen's hand in the photos.
Very interesting, in any case!

I purchased this beautiful star ruby from Etsy's Mitaineshop in Oxford, UK. It really is a gorgeous star ruby. My husband and I are looking for a star ruby to mark our anniversary but we were hoping for a star ruby that is a bit redder. Since I am far from an expert - I am wondering what you all think about her. I'd hate to return it only to hear how amazing the stone is (that is totally my luck!) Thank you! **Vendor pics and two of my own**

Unfortunately, the star I posted back in April was damaged :cry2: But I was insured and so this is my new perfect star sapphire. 4ct, pink-purple, setting and stone from Cecile Raley Designs.

These two stones won't show the stars at the same time. I made this one a long time ago, and I didn't think about this problem at the time.
It's kinda beat up, as I've worn it a lot.
Maybe I'll redo it. IMG_20231112_072752664.jpg

Ah -- the planes are not parallel. Do you think they were when you first made the ring? On the plus side, you've doubled the odds that you'll see a star when you look down at your finger!

As you know, "unwinding" the loop to make the planes parallel again will increase the finger size -- but unwinding and separating them vertically would keep the same finger size at the cost of some distance between the stones. I know you know all this, as an accomplished jewelry-maker.

Yeah, that's the problem. I wanted a ring that I could wear on different fingers.
So over the years, as I have adjusted the fit, the star orientation changed.
Plus, the black star is distinct and the blue star is wonky, as is common!
Maybe I'll rework the ring and change it up in the near future.
Everything I do is an experiment, anyway!

I found this rather crudely made ring at a second hand store, I lovingly refer to as my “Skyrim ring.” It has no metal hallmarks, and I didn’t realize it was a star sapphire until recently. I thought it was a moonstone for the longest time and then I caught it in the sunlight and was like “huh?”

So I hadn’t realized that lab star rubies had come such a long way since I grew up with the opaque Lindy stars you could spot a mile away. This one from Gary is lovely and translucent though. Had no idea this was an option until I saw it on his site so thought I’d share in case anyone was looking for a holy grail star gem but can’t find or spend for an earth mined one lol. I hope Gary sells more of these in the future!

Compared to my earth mined star sapphire

^ Wow! Yeah, that tempted me and I'm not a lab guy. (Well, not in that sense. :cool2:) Pleased to see that it is as lovely as it was represented! What a nice size, too!

Yes I was pleasantly surprised! I was expecting it to be less translucent than my earth mined one. And while it is a bit more opaque it compares quite favorably! I wouldn’t mind a big blue one!

Wow so happy a PSer bought this! I noticed them on Gary’s site too and was wondering about them! It looks lovely.

When I saw your first photo before you said it was a lab I almost lost my mind thinking you’d found a perfect natural star Ruby! So impossible to find such a thing. Loving this lab option.
