I was deliberating between these 2 pairs and bought the ready set earrings in the end. 18k gold, with diamonds. Negotiated to us2250. Pending certification, should get them this evening. IMG-f7fe415af29f152e488f52efb43ef186-V.jpg IMG-75b659792e08d73fef3949f1870334e8-V.jpg

Love the shape and the proportion of the stones.

Flying back to Yangon tomorrow and guess what's the first thing I'm doing when I get out from the airport?

Head straight to Gem Museum to check out this 4+ ct spinel :)

Went to take a look at the spinel. It's 2.23ct being more orange than red. Decided to pass on it.

Collected my moonstones, the new somewhat almond shaped pair and the larger piece that had its matte base repolished and looks a lot better after that! 20171203_224933-1.jpg 20171203_224927-1.jpg 20171203_224944-1.jpg

Passed a few stones to the HK chap when he was here a few weeks back. We are still discussing the settings over whatsapp. Meanwhile, I've decided on these 2 stock settings for the 1.01ct ruby and the rectangular spinel.

I didn't ask as I wasn't thinking of going ahead, but here's one set with a peridot for another of their customers. It has over 1ct of diamonds, so definitely well IMG-ddb1958d04dfc34c91e0e2aef0635c90-V.jpg over US$1k.

Wow. Is the ruby heated or unheated? The colour of the spinel is awesome. Can you tell the difference of the ruby and a red spinel just by their appearance? I have never seen a ruby red spinel IRL

The pinkish red ruby is unheated :)
Since the stones here are native cut, I think it's easier to spot whether it's a ruby, pink sapphire or a spinel based on how sparkly (refractive) they are.

Their RIs are quite close. Which one looks more sparkly? Does the unheated corundum always look silky?

It's hard to explain but after viewing them week in and out you can pretty much tell them apart, not forgetting that the rubies available here are often way smaller than the spinels. The ruby if relatively clean, good transparency and cut with enough facets will be sparklier. Spinels somehow look flatter here with the native cut, even with no window.

Mogok rubies generally contain silk. Mong Hsu ones don't and often have the dark purple/black cores. This is the local lab report for the ruby.

Not Burmese, but a yellow Tanzanian tourmaline and Brazilian chrysoberyl from Mastercut Gems. The larger oval is the tourmaline.

Both are slightly more saturated IRL than captured by my phone cam in the weak daylight indoors and 1 shot with flash.

Can you do me a favour and report back on the Chryso vs Tourmaline sparkle?

I've never seen a tourmaline in natural lighting and have steered clear of it because it is apparently as troublesome as a zircon in terms of softness (I know I own zircons but I don't actually approve of myself owning zircons if that makes sense!) but I REALLY want to know what they are like in terms of sparkle.

I cannot wait to see what you do with them! I am sooooo broke so living vicariously through you!

I don't know if it's a good comparison, since the tourmaline has fewer facets than the chrysoberyl for these 2 stones. In the sun, the chryso actually sparkles more when i move my hand around, probably owing to the facets cut into it. Both are eye clean stones. The tourmaline is larger and also enjoys a good cutting so sparkles nicer than my small pink tourmaline i have in another ring.

I have 2 tourmaline rings. So far so good. I think i will just enjoy them and not worry too much. Should the stone ever chip i can recycle the settings and put another stone in them.

I went to the local gem fair today. All the hugeass over 20ct sapphires, top notch and way smaller rubies with Gubelin or GRS reports were on display. Unfortunately, dual pricing was very evident so i didn't bother with purchasing anything (think 11ct almost white spinel for us$10k and 1ct rubies at us$7-8k). Still, a feast for the eyes.

So I consoled myself with these ultra affordable containers carved from albite 20180114_182322.jpg at us7 each.

The double halo setting I had in mind for my star sapphire turned out to be too small for it, so I'm going ahead with this instead. Hoping for a vintage look.

LOVE this setting for this stone. I'm glad it was eventually chosen.

Thanks for the affirmation :)
I'm actually not too fussy about the settings but this was the priciest among those that could fit!
