How big is too big?

In a cushion or step cut 3-4 carats. In an oval 2.5 carats. And those are pretty much the only shapes I'm drawn to for a centerstone for a diamond ring for myself. That's for daily wear.

But I'd be perfectly happy with something larger for special occassions.

One to two carats seems to be the typical size for my area. I think I would stick with one carat, that size just seems to be the best fit for my lifestyle, surroundings and my personal style. But boy, do I love and appreciate those larger stones, they are so beautiful!

I looked up that classic exchange between Liz Taylor and that other gal.
Liz had a wit that dwarfed her 69 carat diamond.

Before Elizabeth wore the gem as a necklace, it guest starred with the Burtons on an episode of Here’s Lucy, and was also at the centre of a humourous exchange between Elizabeth and the late Princess Margaret of England.

“Is that the famous diamond? But it’s so large—how very vulgar!”

“Yes,” said Elizabeth. “Ain’t it great?”

Margaret then asked to try on the huge stone.

“It doesn’t look so vulgar now, does it?” remarked Elizabeth.
One of my favorite stories!Used it many times over the years in sales presentations and training. The other quote by liz that Ive used many times..."Diamonds shrink over time"(its something to that effect)I dont discriminate against diamonds!I will wear any size...any time !!An emerald cut 5-6 carat in a gents ring would get my attention!

I''d be completely comfortable with something in the 5-7 carat range; it wouldn''t seem out of place or feel *weird*. Anything larger than that, though and I''d be wondering if other people assumed it was a sim. I know it shouldn''t matter what others think (I hear you, Mom), but for some reason it would bother me if others thought I was sporting the fakey-fakey.

I''m the opposite--I would love to gaze at a large diamond, but I wouldn''t want to spend that much money or have other people think I''d spent that much money. I would perhaps be willing to wear it if it was a gift and other people thought it was fake.

Meanwhile, I''ll stick to my 1.5ish carats and admire the enormous diamonds on all of YOUR hands.

I wear a 12mm pear daily, so a 12 to 13mm rb or cushion would suit me fine. I imagine 10 cts. would be my cutoff for daily wear. Frankly no one in LA pays much attention to large diamonds.
I do!

.... though I suppose that depends what your definition of ''pays attention'' is.

Heck, so do I. I mean that in the land of 3 ct. honkers seen all the time, it''s rare for anyone in LA to comment. I suspect you''d have to rock something Liz Taylorish before the grocery store clerk would say something.

There was an older couple waiting for a table at the bar last night. She had the most gorgeous 5 ct. + OEC ring on. I wondered if it was an heirloom or if the hubs had picked it out. Either way it was drool inspiring for sure.

For me, I guess my upper limit would be a 2-2.5 ct. round. For fancy shapes like a oval, pear or emerald cut, maybe a 3 ct.

For a RB, 1 to 2 carats would be comfortable for daily wear, and that would be considered immense where I live! But for an ascher, an EC, and cushion/OECs, there is no limit -- the bigger the better for those cuts, so I could admire their amazing facet structure! Though if I was lucky enough to have a 5-plus carat EC, I would probably only wear it for special occasions (lifestyle issues) so it would be a shame to have such a beauty and not wear it more often.

(I'm not asking what you can afford, assume it is just paid for by someone else tax-free to you.)

1 ct?

2 ct?

3 ct?

4 ct?

5 ct?

6 ct?

7 ct?

8 ct?

Larger?

Well first of all thank you to whoever is buying it for me.

But to answer your question, 2 ct. would be "too big" according to your criteria as applied to me.

And to be honest, where I live (it's kind of a remote place) I only see women with .5 ct diamonds or less from malls.

It''s only too big if you can''t lift your hand

Even if I didn''t pay for it, I would take where I am in my life into consideration. For instance, is it normal for my lifestyle (between work, family, friends, my style to be able to pull off a large rock? The answer is no. At least not without it looking like costume jewelry. So my 2.52 is perfect, at least for now

Recently I almost did upgrade, then thought about my life and decided against it.

For everyday 3 is probably my absolute max and that would be in a step cut of some kind...2 is probably a more comfortable size for me.
Ditto

2ct.

I think 2-3 carats and I''d be comfortable
