Given my present life I would say 3.5 tops.

I LOVE big bling and all but when I see some of these people with huggggggge diamonds (outside of that beautiful pear on here) I feel it''s over done.

I think it also has to go with how the rock is set too... There are pretty gaudy settings out there... Simple is classy and make a big rock stands by itself in all of its glory... That might be why I am not into cocktail ring look... I think too big if when you cannot function wearing a ring on a day to day basis...

For me, a bigger size diamond look dynamite in a fancy shape... As for rounds, I woldnt fo over 5CT -

All of the rings here are so pretty and tasteful!!!!

I just wanted to say how absolutely stunning your ring is!

Wish I could have one just like it!

Oh My!! Thank you so much for this comment - you made my day :)

your ring is gorgeous and i was eying it too

... I need to look into your posts and start drooling... It looks gorgeous on your hands, i wish i had fingers like yours!!! :)
I love my ring - but I think I love yours more! My husband would kill me if he knew that. I actually showed him your ring this morning! I am really loving pears again. My original ring was a 1.57 pear which was traded in for the 4.19 round. But I am in serious lust with your ring - the color is perfect and I love the halo! Are you still thinking about resetting it?

I really need to post some more of my jewelry, but I am so lazy about taking pictures...

Wow!! I am touched by your kind words about my yellow pear. Thank you soooo much :) I love it too, I just cannot believe how lucky I am to be able to wear this magnificent stone with my everyday. I am seriously one lucky gal. I appreciate all the sacrifices I did to save for this ring ( took me about 20 years tucking away $80-$100 a month in a special account ) so now, when I look at it I see much more than just a stone, it''s hard to describe the feeling... i guess a sense of dedication and achievement is what I could describe. I don''t plan on resetting it for a while, and may actually leave it as is, I am growing into loving its setting actually.

But please, do not deprive us from holding back on your lovely ring and jewelry, I''d love to see more pictures of your beautiful halo, it is totally gorgeous and you know, i am not really into rounds much, but yours took my breath away ( i just visited your RB reset ). It''s so gorgeous and so at home on your hand. I read of your health issues, and I hope you are doing good Dear. I hope we keep in touch and you post more on this board...

Hugs to you Sweetpea.
Thank you so much - you are obviously a kind person and deserve to have such a beautiful ring!

One of the reasons I don''t post much is because a lot of people seem to think larger stones are "over done" and most of my stuff is big. I love it and get things to please myself, but I am thrilled when others like it is much as I do.

I realize everyone likes something different, but when people feel the need to "rain on my parade" I find it hurtful (see Patchee''s note below your kind message). As a child I was told "if you don''t have anything nice to say, don''t say anything at all" and I find that a good rule to live by!

I can understand why such comments can get to you - but I would be one of the MANY ladies here that you ooooooooh and ahhhhhhh over your beautiful collections. Trying to ignore hurtful comment can be easier said than done, but please re-consider :) i''d love to get to know you more :)

I agree very strongly.
We should only apply our opinions and standards to ourselves.

We can all be more kind when expressing our preferences:

Example:

Bad: Diamonds over 3 carats are gaudy, tacky and pretentious. Those women are showing off.
Good: I would feel comfortable wearing a diamond up to 3 carats.

Thanks again for your kind comments - I have been through so much in the past few years (healthwise) that I really try to avoid negativity in my life.

Maybe I will do a photo shoot after all!

It is your personal upper limit for wearing (not selling

Wink, would you feel comfortable wearing a 50 carat honker on a daily basis?
No?
How bout a 10 ct?
A 5 ct?

I suspect the average of men would be lower than that of women.

I like this thread a lot; it''s so amazing to see how differently people view diamond size.

I wear a one carat right now and it feels perfect. In fact, peers often tell me they think it looks ''huge''; which, after frequenting this site, I find hilarious! Regardless, it can be a little humbling in a weird way, and I often feel the need to mention that it was inherited--as my husband and I, in no way, would have the ability or desire to buy such a thing at this time.

That said, at a later point in life I could see myself wearing something around 1.5-1.7 carats, in a very simple, understated, bezel setting. My MIL wears one that size and to me, it''s impressive, stunning, and gigantic! Maybe I''m easily impressed, huh? But the thought of wearing 3 or 4 carats every day blows me away! I would feel like a movie star or something!!! I don''t think that my lifestyle could live up to a rock that size....maybe if I become famous some day. :)

I think I would be comfortable having a 2.5 for everyday wear... but I doubt that will ever happen!! haha

I seem to remember that Princess Margaret said something along those lines to Elizabeth Taylor once. I believe Elizabethe was gracious in her response.

I think I respectfully have to disagree with you Moh, but maybe 3ct+ on a bloke is a different matter!

If it''s free, I''ll take as big as it comes.

And I''ll wear it too!

I looked up that classic exchange between Liz Taylor and that other gal.
Liz had a wit that dwarfed her 69 carat diamond.

http://www.dameelizabethtaylor.com/tb_diamond.html

snip

Before Elizabeth wore the gem as a necklace, it guest starred with the Burtons on an episode of Here’s Lucy, and was also at the centre of a humourous exchange between Elizabeth and the late Princess Margaret of England.

“Is that the famous diamond? But it’s so large—how very vulgar!”

“Yes,” said Elizabeth. “Ain’t it great?”

Margaret then asked to try on the huge stone.

“It doesn’t look so vulgar now, does it?” remarked Elizabeth.

You know, I think people should be able to speak their minds even if what they dislike happens to be what someone else is wearing on her finger.

If someone says, "I think over 1 carat is vulgar," that's the way SHE feels. She's answering the question posed in the thread. She's not attacking people who wear over-one-carat rings, she's just expressing her opinion. I don't feel bad because some stranger thinks my 1.6 carat diamond is vulgar. I'm interested to hear her opinion.

Similarly, if someone says "I think under 3 carats is scrimpy and piddling," that doesn't make me feel bad about my diamond. That's her opinion, not mine. Her opinion can't hurt me.

I know many of you gals would never want to wear my .71 ct I1 J. But when you say, "diamonds need to be eye clean," or "J color is too low," or "under a carat is tiny," it doesn't bother me a bit. Even if you said, "Ewww, what a tiny, dirty, yellow diamond!" I wouldn't mind. It's my diamond and I'm the one who has to like it. Anyone who doesn't like it is welcome not to wear it.

I have strong likes and dislikes myself. I happen to hate princess diamonds--they set my teeth on edge, like chalk on a blackboard. How does that hurt those of you who love your beautiful princess diamonds? Why should you mind what *I* think?

So anyone who wants to say that the jewelry I love is ugly, vulgar, too big, too small, too yellow, too old fashioned, too clunky, too fussy, or too anything else--go ahead, I don't mind. I will be especially interested to hear about what you DO love. Especially if you show lots of pictures!

What I LOVE about Liz's comment is how she pointed out to the princess that vulgar can only apply to OTHERS.
When it is hanging around YOUR neck suddenly the same diamond is not vulgar.

Oh, Touche Liz!

This is a perfect example of how it is best to apply our standards only to ourselves.

Glit it goes both ways, AFAIC.

Putting down another's diamond because it is small, low-clarity etc is just as unkind as poo-pooing it because it is a huge D IF.

Each diamond is perfect for the owner who loves it.

Moh, I agree that it''s rude to tell someone HER ring is too big, too small, too yellow, too white, whatever.

But people lately have been criticizing others for expressing general opinions. For someone to say "I don''t like large stones" or "I don''t like small stones" is not insulting anyone. It''s just expressing an opinion.

When someone says "I1 stones are full of ugly flaws," that''s not a personal insult directed at me, and I don''t take it as one, even though I own (and love) two I1 stones.

No clue... because I''ve never even tried anything that budget doesn''t allow for. Don''t wanna tempt myself.

I agree completely with glitterata. If people take offense to someone saying "I believe X cts and over look gaudy" then that is their issue, not the speaker''s.

This site is full of threads about personally owned jewelry (check out SMTR) and it''s rare to see anyone say "Oh, your ring is decent, if not a tad too big." That would be offensive.

To answer a question with an honest, general opinion about size and why one does or does not like it, not offensive at all.

If you (the rhetorical you, that is) can''t handle reading that strangers on the Internet don''t care for a diamond the size of what you happen to wear everyday, then don''t open a thread titled "How big is too big?" Graciously exclude yourself from a situation in which you are clearly too sensitive to be involved.

Interactions between different people would be worth nothing, after all, if nobody offered their honest opinions and ideas. And frankly, PS would be a much weaker community for it.

I certainly don't want to limit speech, control or censor.

I think all perspectives are welcome and the result of this healthy discussion is more understanding and a comfortable community for everyone.

We see in this thread that we are a very diverse group.

3 tops, but a 2.5 would be ok, but it all depends on the setting. I have my dream setting already and I think anything bigger than what I have (1.58) would over shadow the setting. However, for a plain setting, I stick with my original response.

I understand that, Moh. Besides, you can''t control or censor anyway, unless you are an undercover mod for this board. That is, after all, their job. Our jobs as posters is to simply be a part of the community, to come as we are, so to speak.

All perspectives have always been welcome on PS, long before this thread, and I hope they will continue to be welcome for a long time after, as well. The good news is that neither you, nor I, have the ability (nor is it our place) to censor anyone on here.

Since I have a size 4.5 finger, I think a 4.5 ct diamond would work very well

I wear a 12mm pear daily, so a 12 to 13mm rb or cushion would suit me fine. I imagine 10 cts. would be my cutoff for daily wear. Frankly no one in LA pays much attention to large diamonds.

I would be comfortable with a 5ct to 6ct for a fancy cut. RB, probably 4 or so.
