Fun with Fluorescence!

That is so cool. I love fluorescence!
 
This seems like a good place for a fluorescence question: If a pink spinel has faint red fluorescence, would it be noticeable in bright sunlight?

I don’t believe so, no.
 
I found a pair of what I believe are Sri Lankan hairpins with pink sapphires/rubies set in gilt silver, from c. 1900. The stones fluoresce a beautiful red. (Here I'm shining the blacklight on one of the hairpins in a dim but not dark room. The shots I took in the complete dark came out really blurry.)

Can I play? I love love love love fluor and actually I look for it in diamonds. I don't know why but it must be the coloured stoner in me! Here's a few of mine:

Medium fluorescence diamond, spinel, & ruby under UV light. Don't know why the diamond glows blue and green under the same condition.

My ebay yellow sapphire surprised me. I didn't expect it to have fluorescence. Its fluorescence was an orangey red under long and a milder orange yellow under short. I looked it up and yellow Sri Lankan sapphires have fluorescence like this.
I wonder how BE treating affects fluorescence. I couldn't find any articles on that topic. I paid a BE price for the sapphire which was sold as heated only.

I was also surprised that my commercial grade ruby outshined everything.

I couldn't manage a picture, but I was surprised that my ebay tsavorite had fluorescence while my higher quality one was inert. The ebay one is a lighter tone, so maybe it is just different.

Your ebay stone has a low iron content. Tsavorite and Merelani Mint are grossulare garnet colored by vanadium. Merelani Mint has a very low iron content - some lighter colored Tsavorite too. The deeper colored Tsavorite shows no fluorescence except a rare variety with a higher chromium content from Kuranze.

Colorless grossular shows fluorescence - the rare colorless Mali garnet (a mix of grossular and andradite) no (iron) .

Here’s a tennis bracelet I recently acquired and a loose ruby. I got a black light today and decided to have a look :bigsmile:

My padparadschas are obnoxiously pink. I knew that a couple of the diamonds on my ring would be strong because of how they look in sunlight so I was pleased to see that I'm right.

Lavender spinel, oiled emerald, and blue sapphire. Was surprised to see the blue turn pink, even if only a little!

Ha! I have a thing for pretty flower pots for garden decor and I am always saying that I have a pot addiction…. :lol:

This is amazing. Why does it glow like that? Usually diamonds turn blue right? I’m fascinated.
 
A specimen of emeralds in the matrix from the Panjshir Valley in Afghanistan which fluoresce red in LWUV due to their chromium content:
