I agree stones looks a bit grey, I’ll ask them to confirm color and put against white background to see if it looks any different. If not, I think I’ll request different stones.

I also agree that 4mm sides isn’t too big for size 4 finger. I’d probably end up asking if they can make side stones bigger, but going back and forth seeing if I like soli look.

I’m so glad you brought up lab diamond option. This is why I want to hear PS users’ opinions, it’s something I’ve never even would consider! I saw some lab diamonds on Tianyu site, maybe they’ll allow lab diamond sides stones. If not, I’ll look into starsgem option. Thanks for the recommendation! =)2
Tianyu made a very similar ring for me. (It's probably around page 60? on this thread.) The biggest difference is I used lab sapphires for the side stones. it's a 6.5mm moissanite and 2 4mm sapphires. It turned out rather well. My finger size is 5-- technically 4.75 so not vastly larger than yours. My center stone is higher than in your CAD, but my inspiration was as well. (Personally, I think the slightly lower setting is probably better and it may be something I look into when/if I need the prongs tightened in the future, or if I size it down a smidge.) The stone looked kinda gray in the pictures that Ella sent to me but it's gorgeous in real life. This is what it looks like on my finger (Please excuse the ugly knuckles :():

@docscully I am swooning over your ring, it's drop dead gorgeous! I might ask for a lower setting as well. Do you have your CAD still if you don't mind sharing? Or if it's posted somewhere maybe I can go look at it. You mentioned your ring big was big, was it due to incorrect size sent? I'm glad to know that stones look better in real life than in pictures, if Tianyu doesn't provide better looking stones in videos, maybe I'll just go ahead with it and hope for the best. I'm still waiting for a reply. (You do not have ugly knuckles!!)

That's my CAD. The example you were sent has the center stone half a millimeter lower than mine, which puts it more in line with the side stones. My ring is sized to be a 5, but my finger kept shrinking. (I'm on medications to reduce inflammation, which is likely part of it.) I expected that my finger would swell by summer but it hasn't yet so I didn't change anything about the siz, but I may do so in the future. I felt the same way you did regarding the appearance of the stone but seeing all the lovely in focus pictures here and on weddingbee gave me confidence it was just a fluke with their photography skills.

I agree... I am pretty sure they have done this ring before and they are showing you an example CAD. I don’t think for your finger size that it is impossible to fit a slightly larger stone. Maybe go for 4 mm so that it looks closer to your inspiration picture.

I would change the bottom measurement to at least 1.6 mm for durability. Since you are going with yellow gold, I would also change to G/H in color. The video is showing that grey color because they are colorless stones and you will get that steely blue/grey look with the H&A cut. The G/H will show some warmth in in yellow gold though. If you don’t mind that, you will be fine. They also offer an ‘F’ that is something in-between but I personally would choose G/H. The rest of the measurements look fine to me. They are pretty good at the 3 stone rings like this.

Not to take away from Tianyu but if you ordered this through Starsgem, you could have lab diamond side stones. It doesn’t cost too much more and would look really nice with the center H&A cut.
Thank you for everyone's input so far :)

For those who may be wondering, I asked, and Tianyu only does moissanites, no lab diamonds at all, not even for small side stones.

I have also inquired Tianyu about the stones, confirming that color is GH, as they look for steely grey. Emily did confirm they are GH, and was so kind to send me another video.

Is it just me, or are there lines on the larger stone the whole time in the video? :loopy: Screen Shot 2019-06-10 at 7.29.04 AM.png Or maybe I'm seeing things? Sorry I don't know how to make video bigger.

Maybe those who own moissies can chime in. Does anyone else have these lines on their moissanites? Is this normal?

I was unsure about posting this photo but I thought it would be informative for anyone who is deciding between a Lightbox diamond and moissanite, especially now that DeBeers has (reluctantly) introduced white lab diamonds. This isn't my pendant; I only handled it when my sister visited me last weekend.

Top 7/8 carat white lab diamond, bottom 6.6mm D/E moissanite:

In person there is a noticeable difference between the diamond and moissy.

Which one did you like better? The cuts are more splintery with no culet. I don’t think they are like a H&A cut. Here is the pink one I had

I think I'm so used to H&As, so I think I liked the Tianyu one better.

I posted other photos of the pendant in the lab diamond subforum, but if I had to be honest, I really didn't like it...I thought the cut was really bad. The culet is actually really large in the Lightbox diamond, so there was a lot of leakage in the table. I'll attach another photo so you can see it:

lightbox2.png

Aside from the cut, the color was nice. Very, very white. People and the GIA have been saying it is a G, but I would place it at F. I know it doesn't look like it here, but it was definitely brighter than my Tianyu moissanite indoors. Outdoors I'd say they looked the same. The lightbox facets are definitely sharper than moissy ("pool of water" effect).

I think if someone were planning to upgrade their engagement ring, I'd personally recommend saving the $$$ and buy a Tianyu moissy than the Lightbox diamond...or even baking a nice CZ...just my humble opinion, though! ;-)

Now I see what you mean with the large culet. I thought mine looked very splintery like a round brilliant. I think they are trying to keep this as fashion jewelry so I don’t expect a huge improvement in what they are offering right now other than volume.

I am hoping the competing companies like the Takata or AV will continue to improve on the cuts while the price also goes down a bit like moissanites have done. I don’t think they will get super cheap but I do think the cuts will get better and maybe a good alternate for those that can’t afford a mined diamond but don’t want a moissanite. There is still a market for that. It is just not very big on PS.

Oh, I definitely agree with everything you said. I really think DeBeers would prefer to keep these as costume jewelry, so I didn't have very high expectations. It's nice but not something I'd plan on popping out the diamond and using as formal jewelry. Anyway, I'm glad I got to see one firsthand; makes me excited to see what's up and coming for other lab diamond competitors!

Not to mention...I'm looking forward to moissy prices dropping as well! :appl::lol: I've been holding off buying an OEC moissy for this reason. :twisted2:

Hey all...my first thought was this seems pretty fab... Looks like the prongs circled below are sticking out a smidge relative to the others but not sure they look ok in the video. Am I missing anything?

I wouldn't worry about the prongs, I think the entire ring looks amazing!

right? maybe the upside of waiting a few months despite the higher price is they have refined their technique. will of course post more pics/video when i have it in my hot little hand. :lol-2:

The prongs look fine to me. That is a blown up pic and the ring is being held on an angle. The cut on the stones look really cool...

Just saw this like 30 seconds ago on IG! I think you're going to love it. Prongs should hopefully all be even.
oh cool, thanks! i am betting whatever small irregularities won't be noticeable IRL. it's supposed to be on its way :mrgreen2:

ah, that explains it. i didn't see it on PS and rarely go on Reddit...thought it may be nice for someone who wants to try that cut. should be easy to have the milgrain buffed out by a jewelry repair place. i'm not a fan of most milgrain in general but the moissy vendors don't seem to have mastered it yet

I think that SG has managed the most ‘fine’ miligrain so far but even when I put it next to the miligrain work I have had done here, it does not compare. Personally, I would save the money by getting the ring made over there and then just adding the miligrain over here. Not terribly difficult and better than having to sell the ring again for a loss....

What's the largest lab diamond Stargem and Tianyu do in an oval? I'm in the market for a moissanite 1.5 oval but will consider lab diamonds depending on cost. Thanks,

Tianyu doesn’t do lab diamonds...as far as I’m aware, Starsgem only has round brilliants at this time. Personally I don’t think their lab diamonds are worth the cost right now unless you are going under a carat for the stones.

It is up to 3 carats but that is over $5000 and only in rounds. I have seen some ovals from August Vintage and also Clean Origin. The ones from CO are around $4500 for a 1.5 carat and there aren’t many choices.

I think there will be multiple types of cuts by many different vendors in the next couple of years but we are not there yet. I know you have been looking at doing this setting for awhile now. I would choose a moissanite oval for now and you can always replace the center stone at a later date. Either get a really good one from August Vintage and you may not have to replace it or save the money and get one from one of the Chinese vendors with the idea of replacing the stone in the future.Someone just got this mixed cut oval on Reddit and it looks pretty good.

So I ended up with THREE Tianyu rings :D
I originally had Tianyu design me a round 7.5mm moissanite ring with side stones. While it was in production, I fell in love with a cushion I saw on their website, and added that to the order. Finally, I got a $30 half-eternity sterling silver and moissanite wedding band to match the cushion solitaire. I love that my wedding band is so inexpensive AND it has moissanite!

All three rings were shipped on Friday 6/7 and arrived two weeks later on Friday 6/21. It was a very small package and it did not require a signature (which I appreciate because they were very safe in my mailbox and I didn't have to wait around all day).

I love the way both custom rings came out! But I cannot wear both, and decided to keep the cushion. If you like the round, check it out on LT (https://loupetroop.com/listings/rings-lab-created-center/7-dot-5mm-round-moissanite-in-platinum).

The cushion is a DEF and the round is a GH but I cannot detect ANY color in any lighting in either ring. So if you are looking for a slight buttery hint with Tianyu, go lower.
I love the hearts and arrows. The ring(s) are platinum and I love the hefty weight to them.

I started the process in April and didn't receive my rings until June (a week after my wedding, bummer), so it took quite a bit longer than I thought it would. And I was told shipping to US would take one week and it took 2, so that was also a bummer. But I LOVE my ring(s) and love the price I paid so I'm overall happy that I went with Tianyu.

Picked this up today, workmanship looks good and the fg stones are very white. No weird color tones on the frenchies and they seem well matched with the center. Will take more photos / video later this week. =)2
It’s beautiful!
