Been a while... replacement ring questions

A few years ago when I first got engaged, I did quite a bit of research from this lovely forum, and it was so helpful. I ended up getting a beautiful yellow gold Gelin Abaci TR-232 setting, and the diamond, if I recall, was .78ct H SI1, with good cut and polish:

I loved that ring, I loved that diamond, and I was happy with it for about three years.

Fast forward to today... I lost it. Somewhere in my travels (and I travel frequently), it just disappeared. I've searched high and low and filed police reports and posted lost ads everywhere between Vegas and LA that I was, and it's gone. So after some hysterical crying and some serious guilt, my husband and I are looking to purchase a new ring.

Given that we bought our last diamond in the middle of the recession, we got an AMAZING deal on it. Prices have risen significantly in the meantime, and as such, I'm reevaluating my diamond priorities. I've been browsing the lower colored diamond threads, especially since I'll be getting the new ring either in yellow or rose gold... no white metals for me, thanks! Our jeweler in Chicago found a gorgeous diamond, but it is a significantly lower color than I ever thought I'd consider. I'm definitely seeing the charm in warmer diamonds, though.

What he found for me is a 1.02ct K, SI1, good cut (although he said to his eyes the cut looked very good, and I trust him). It's graded by EGL USA, so I'm betting the color is closer to M or N -- and I believe these pictures are showing the stone at it's most colored. He's asking $3200 for it, although I'm thinking we'll be able to negotiate him down a little bit.

Given that I live in TX now, I had my mother in law pop into his shop to take a look at the diamond in person. She said it has beautiful fire and clarity, and a great cut, but is noticeably yellow, almost a dilute apple juice color in person. I'm all about sparkle over color, and I think I'll love it quite a bit, especially since it's got a tiny bit of spread. On my 4.5 finger it'll look HUGE, haha.

Even though I know a tension set ring will call a lot of attention to the body color of the diamond, I'm very firm in getting one. I wanted to ask what you all thought about the way a tinted diamond performs in yellow vs. rose gold -- I know it will be colored, I'm just curious; will yellow gold tend to make it reflect more of a pure yellow, will rose gold encourage warmer, pinker fire? Or will rose gold make the yellow body color dull? I've looked at pictures here until my eyes were about ready to fall out of my head, and I thought getting opinions from people who may have seen something similar in person would be a good idea.

I've narrowed down the setting to either the TR-232 that I had, or the TR-241, which is a bypass with straight ends instead of curved, but has the same elegant twist in the shank. So... opinions on what will bring out the best in the stone (best meaning the most fire, and take the most advantage of the warmth in a pretty way)? Settings, metal colors?

Sorry I've written a novel for you, but I thank you in advance for your opinions :) I've been a lurker here for a long time, and even though I'm sad to have to look for a new ring, I'm trying to get excited about it!

My jeweler is graciously sending the stone out to me in TX so I can get a look at it before I make a decision. I'm also having another jeweler look at a variety of warmer stones for me (I'd initially told her H-I, but I'm definitely willing to go lower after seeing so many beautiful warm diamonds here). Hopefully I'll have a better idea by the end of the week!

Still taking opinions on metal colors, if anyone has expertise in the matter :)

When you get it try setting it next to a new penny to see how it might look in a rose gold. I think the
Rose with a lower color would be lovely (at least in my mind) .

I'm just chiming in to say best of luck to you! I lost my wedding band about 11 years ago - I know how it feels :(

tyty333, that's a great idea! In my head, rose gold with a low color stone works out perfectly, but we all know how that goes :p Both my jeweler and my mother in law recommended yellow gold with this particular stone... but with the last ring everyone was saying "you have to put it in WG, it'll look yellow if you don't", which was never the case, at least to my eyes. Did it refract yellow gold in the setting? Of course. But it was obvious that the body color was on the white spectrum. I'm hoping for a similar effect, getting flashes of copper and pink out of a rose gold setting... we'll just have to see when it gets here.

motownmama, thanks for your support. I know at the end of the day, the ring was just a "thing"... but it was such a pretty thing!!! Luckily we had it insured, and got the full value covered. It's not the same, but it helps :)

Just an update: I received the diamond in the mail yesterday and have taken a good look at it in a variety of lightings. Mostly it's a creamy white, with a tiny bit of yellow (that is totally unimportant when one looks at the SPARKLES). In some lights it is VERY noticeably yellow, but it's a pretty shade, not brown/yellow or dingy. I think this is the one for me... big and sparkly and very pretty.

I am definitely leaning toward rose gold, as when I've held the diamond up to yellow gold it seems to blend in a bit too much for my taste. I think the contrast with rose gold will make the stone pop a bit more, and since I'm not trying to hide the yellow, I imagine it'll reflect a pretty coppery/yellow when it does decide to pick up color from the setting.

Now I just have to decide on straight or curved bypass... decisions! :D

Do you know if you will use 14K or 18K RG? Much of metal color depends on the alloy the bench uses but I like 14Kt RG with near/colorless stones and stones with a brown body color. I like 18K RG for stones with more yellow hues because I think it makes the stone appear softer and warmer...really playing up the color and making the choice look even more intentional.

I'll see if I can find some images that better describe what I'm attempting to explain.

Wow!! When I look at Haven's ring I think it could definitely work. Some PSers will advice to only use RG if you have a white or brownish tint diamond. (I have been considering RG too for my U-V coloured OEC).

I have a feeling that it will be a pretty and warm combination, but I am not an expert...
Could you post a pic of the setting you are considering?

Chanteuse,

I have an EGL-USA M old mine cut diamond set in rose gold and most of the time, the diamond looks almost silvery white. Once in awhile, I'll see some warmth, but it's more a champagne color.

If you like rose gold, go for it.

I've been drooling over Haven's ring for days, now!!! Gelin Abaci only offers 18k for rose gold, which I would prefer to the bolder color of 14k, at least for this particular purpose.

I really appreciate the feedback, it's good to know that I'm not crazy, going against everyone else's advice :)

Here's a picture of the setting I'm considering:

Or the original setting that I had, but this time I would do it in 18k rose gold:

I really appreciate the feedback, everyone -- even just (obsessively) browsing threads is so educational and fun!

I've never worn a setting of that style before so I have no personal experience, but when I look at the setting you are considering, all I can imagine is catching the part of the shank that bypasses the stone on everything. :o Maybe not, you have more experience with this style, but it appears that your original setting wrapped around the stone in a way that would prevent it from getting hung up on anything, but the new one juts out from the stone and I keep seeing it get caught in the little holes in the drum of a washing machine, in button holes when dressing, on the lip of a table of drawer, pockets, handbag, etc. Just food for thought. Your ring sounds beautiful so I would hate for you to lose a single second of enjoyment from it because you were worried of damaging it. :(sad But again, I have no personal experience, so maybe it's a non issue...

It's something to think about, but honestly the ring sits so low on the hand that I seriously doubt it would be an issue. At least, not one that I wouldn't immediately compensate for. I've been wearing one of my mother's wedding sets since my own ring went missing, and her diamond sits up HIGH... prong setting, very easy to catch on just about everything. After the first day of wearing it, I didn't have any trouble.

Agh, I'm so torn :) Talk about first world problems, lol.

I think 18k is going to be more flattering. "Pink" 14k, in my mind, seems most appropriate for white diamonds. Now i think Megs ring is in 14k so of course it doesnt fit for every case, but in general i think 18k coppery color goes will with the color your looking at.

I love a bypass ring, and half bezels and whatnot. I would LOVE to see an oval in some of the sholdt half bezels or bypass rings... but if your set on that brand, i understand! I like the curved one better, i prefer the rounded edges to mirror the rounded edge of the oval.

Will be very lovely!

Thanks for the input, Neil, I'm definitely going with 18k rose gold (as opposed to 14k). I love the rounded setting, and it's what I had first... my only reason for looking at the straight bypass is that I really want to tension set shown off, and I felt like the rounded setting obscured more of the stone than I wanted. It might be a different story with this particular diamond, since it is larger than my last one... I just can't make up my mind about it.

Either way I think it'll be gorgeous, I just need to decide if the rounded setting will remind me too much of my last one (new diamond and new metal notwithstanding).

Welp, made up my mind to go with my original setting. It was gorgeous and perfect then, and it'll be gorgeous and perfect now :) It's just very me; simple and elegant.

Pictures coming as soon as I get that sucker on my finger! I've got an audition in Chicago coming up in October, so I'll just have the jeweler hold on to it there and pick it up in person.

It's HERE! I could not love it more if I tried. Fits like a glove, and the stone just comes alive against the rose gold. I'm not good enough with photography to capture the sparkle, but it's unbelievable, so lively!

I'm going to try and take some more soon in different lighting :)

Many thanks to everyone who provided feedback!
