Are there names for types of halos?

Right now, I am leaning towards a bezel halo. But I am looking for ones that are surrounded in metal. (kind of in a "bucket"?)

Instead of a bezel halo just sitting on top the band. I've seen both.

I can't find a good example but maybe this is obvious to those in the know?

Is there a term to make searching easier?

:D

bezels are kinda hard to find. You're thinking maybe of a cathedral style so that the shank extends up to the halo part? i really can't think of a way to narrow down a search to find exactly what you're looking for. Some sites don't even have it so that you can search for "bezel" and have all their bezels pop up, you just have to kind of search through the solitaire section for what you're looking for.

You might want to browse the SMTB thread full of bezels, it might help you narrow down what you're looking for and maybe choose a designer?

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/show-us-your-bezel-rings.121897/

Here are a few i thought of off hand.

Do you mean a halo with a basket instead of an open gallery?

The Tacori Dantela has a basket where the diamond is surrounded by an elaborate gallery view: http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/diamond-settings/tacori-2620rd-dantela-crown-diamond-engagement-ring-2524.htm

Whereas this Ritani setting has a more open gallery view:
http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/ritani-1rz1323-halo-diamond-engagement-ring-3881.htm

I am thinking you DON'T like this look: http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/diamond-settings/halo-bezel-diamond-engagement-ring-197.htm

But you want something more like this (with maybe more or less metal underneath the halo): http://www.loveaffairdiamonds.com/the-casablanca-halo-setting/

Are you talking cathedral versus a dome shank?

Yes, and yes. Thanks!

I was failing at even finding solid examples.

This is... tricky!

This is exactly right.

It seems whiteflash and others (Ritani, maybe) have a nice variety of the kind I don't prefer.

What's contradictory about this is I keep saying "I would like low-profile, please!" but these bucket ones appear to sit up at least a little.

My unicorn ring is the bucket kind (maybe not solid, maybe a scroll or petals or a design - probably not a pave bucket or tiny diamonds), but still isn't being held up high.

Where the heck is this ring?

I am going to google this. Ha.

I think I saw in another thread that someone said you have a halo? Would you please link me to yours? Or post a pic? :)

Rubybeth explained it better than I did. :)

When I do find one that is "bucket" style - then something is off like it isn't bezel set. Or it has tiny sapphires or diamonds under it.

I just want a bezel halo in that contained style. Not out in the open.

Who is this directed toward?

And you can get low "buckets". But they won't allow a flush (or even close) fit wedding band.

These are nice. I remember the thea because I liked it.

I wish there were less pronounced "arms" holding it up?

Possibly what I am looking for isn't a thing?
(I don't want to make a ring at this point! ;-)

See this one?

http://www.loveaffairdiamonds.com/the-celeste-halo/

If it were only diamonds (no sapphires), and has maybe even a less busy scroll-work (now I am just borderline making up stuff) on the ring, it would be pretty close.

It is bucket-y, halo, bezel, and low-profile.
Still has pronounced arms, though. But maybe they all do?

You.

Oh, good point about putting a band next to it. Duh. This makes sense.

Words to help you translate into jewelry terms:

bucket = basket
arms = cathedral style
scroll work = basket engraving

So you want a bezeled halo with a decorative (possibly petal or floral style) basket without a cathedral profile.

What about a version of this ring where the center stone is bezeled (all of their rings are made custom, and a bezel would need to be custom, so you could ask for a tweak like this)? http://www.loveaffairdiamonds.com/the-frankie-halo-setting/

Or this one? http://erikawinters.com/Engagement-Rings-Caroline_Halo.html#.V04Qe5MrKRs

Or if you like this one, but want a diamond halo and a simpler gallery view, just ask for the changes (again, all of these settings are custom, so you can ask for whatever): http://www.loveaffairdiamonds.com/the-celeste-halo

But keep in mind that some of these types of settings WILL NOT allow for a band to sit flush.

Explain specifically what you mean by "bucket"? Are you talking about French Cuts? These are quite expensive in halos.... Are you talking about a non round shape in a halo? Are you talking about the head of the ring?

This is a round pave halo with a plain shank;

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/my-stone-has-a-new-home-halo-reset-from-steven-kirsch.177434/

You can get a plain shank made on anything, you just ask for a plain shank (no decoration on the sides). The stone inside it is prong not bezel set.

These are elongated French Cuts in the halo, the centre stone again is prong set even though it looks like there is a bezel as well;

http://www.loveaffairdiamonds.com/the-rendezvous-halo-setting/

This is a all metal decorative halo the stone is bezel set.

When she says "bucket" she means basket, instead of an open profile like some bezeled rings have. She wants a more enclosed profile view, with no cathedral.

So you want a low, decorative basket with engraving or filigree work. And you want your center diamond to be bezel-set rather than prong-set. It sounds like you also want a halo set with diamonds... and one that's relatively flat or horizontal. Is that about right?

I want to add to rubybeth's definitions...very helpful

Words to help you translate into jewelry terms:

bucket = basket
arms = cathedral style
scroll work = basket engraving
gallery = area underneath the stone

This pic might help...

As requested, pictures of my ring. It's a cathedral plain shank v-cut pave halo and a prong set asscher center stone with a gallery that was specifically designed to accommodate a flush fit straight wedding band. It was custom.

NOT like these, because she doesn't like a cathedral (she calls them "arms" in her posts), where the shank swoops up toward the halo. AND she wants to be able to wear a band with it, as flush as possible, so the others you linked to definitely won't allow for that, with all the metal around the stone right at finger height.

Probably more a side profile like this Megan Thorne ring: http://www.greenwichjewelers.com/designers/megan-thorne/megan-thorne-emerald-cut-diamond-ribbon-crown-ring.html

Edited to add: P.S. Gypsy's plain shank halo is one of my absolute favorite rings on PS. :cheeky: :love: And the custom Maytal Hannah that cookiebuttermonster linked is going to be my inspiration for my OEC when I reset it. Perfection to me! But if you don't like a cathedral, neither setting is quite right, and the Maytal Hannah ring isn't a halo, but rather a double bezel with milgrain.

Thank you Ruby. This might be a good fit, if she orders it with a bezel set center:
http://m.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/guinevere-solitaire-engagement-ring-180.htm...
And they can add pave to the shank if she doesn't want a plain shank. They can also add milgrain to it if she wants a more antique style.

Oh, I LOVE the Guinevere! Here's the regular link if you're not on a mobile device: http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/guinevere-solitaire-engagement-ring-180.htm

Whiteflash can definitely modify this setting, as I asked about it a few years ago for my radiant.

The only thing it doesn't have is a decorative basket where the diamond sits, but it has other advantages, like the fact that it would allow for a band to sit flush, either a plain band or a diamond band to match the halo like this one: http://www.whiteflash.com/wedding-rings/halo-diamond-wedding-band-1142.htm

Okay, I hope I uploaded my pic correctly.

This is a silver ring I own that is actually a good example.

I like how the shank runs right into the basket.

I also like the basket. I am open to ones that are plain like this, or maybe have something going on. But I don't like the really open or exposed ones.

I am wondering if in the event I do find a setting like this, if a band would fit flush? Maybe I would need one like this except slightly raised so it could have a band next to it.

Has anyone seen a bezel halo like this? (basket/shank)

Gypsy your ring is very pretty!

Hmm, that's not really what I was envisioning. It's honestly... a lot of metal from the side view. I don't know how else to put it. Do you want a ring that's exactly like that? Then I think custom may be the way to go, to get exactly what you want. Are you able to wear a band flush with that ring? If not, there's your answer.

It reminds me a lot of OneGarnetGirl's designs: https://www.etsy.com/listing/106479877/14k-rose-gold-and-oregon-sunstone-halo

A setting like that may or may not allow for a band to sit flush, because the angle of the metal surrounding the stone and where it connects to the shank may push the band away from the shank. Depending on how wide the band you wear with it is, it may or may not work. The shank would need to be pretty wide (like, nearly as wide as the diamond/halo, which could be pretty wide), or the center stone/halo width in good proportion to the shank (so a smaller stone with a narrower shank, or a larger stone with a wider shank). You can see in the OneGarnetGirl listing that she's paired that ring with a very curved band. This is why most halo settings have cathedral sides to support the center stone/halo, as well as allow for a band to be worn flush or close to flush. Having a bunch of metal surrounding the center stone is going to make a flush band really difficult. Unless you go custom, you may have to choose one or the other.

No way you are getting a flush fit band with that profile. You aren't even getting a close fit band with that.

Okay so these are some profile that are similar. None of them will allow a flush fit or close fit wedding band though. Just an FYI.
