Wow I wonder how there are any business operating in Canada at all!
Alberta - $15/hr
Ontario - $14/hr
BC - $13.85, going up to $14.60 June 1

Paying your employees a proper wage shouldn't be seen as a negative.

All of those are large cities with large economies. Try mandating those wages in a town of 500 and see how many businesses are able to afford it.

We pay our employees much more than $15 per hour, we are in Silicon Valley, where cost of living is much more. Just as Redwood said, depends on the area you reside. $15 per hour should not be the standard everywhere, depends on the cost of living. And, you can’t compare Canada to the US as far as wages are concerned.

I’m paying attention to the polls that pit the current candidates against Trump. The only candidate that consistently wins against Trump is Bernie. All of the rest lose...by a long shot. That’s what he’s hoping for too. He’s only said he’s worried about running against Bernie.

Cool, because Bernie aligns with my politics Bernie was the only candidate in the LAST election who had a shot against Trump.

So while everyone else wants a middle leaning candidate, understand this, a moderate candidate will not get the job done against trump. A moderate candidate will not inspire the young voters. Bernie is actually inspiring the voters with income $55000 and under which is big because that means the possibility of taking the people who voted for trump in the last election.

And don’t get me started on what needs to be done with climate change since Trump has been in office because we don’t need a moderate approach to that either.

It isn’t time for a moderate approach this one time. We have something extreme in office and it will take an extreme approach to get him out.

Those are actually provinces... Which include more than a few towns of 500.

That's great! However someone specifically mentioned $15 which is why I brought that up. It's also a minimum wage, not a maximum or average. Personally I'm disgusted that many places in the US pay servers $2/hr and expect the customers to make up the rest of the wage (but that's probably a discussion for another thread!).

@Queenie60 is correct that Canada cannot be compared to the US where wages are concerned. I don't know enough about Canada to comment on it either. If businesses manage to stay open that's great. But the discussion was about the US and a mandated $15.

Prevailing wages (in the US) are different in every community and businesses that don't pay them rightfully suffer with high turnover rates. There is a balance that is needed. Some employers offer a generous benefits package but lower wages, it is up to the prospective employee to decide which is better.

I don't worship at the Church of the Holy Government nor do I believe in it's ability to manage an economy with a large amount of interference. Blanket regulations like a high minimum wage don't work and will always have unintended consequences. Shuttered businesses, part time jobs, fewer positions, etc.

Does this kind of thing make you feel better or superior?
I just find it hilarious that when someone disputes what you say, you can never give a straight answer and try to brush it off and continue to think that you're right. You DID comment on it, and then when I said something to dispute what you said, you try to back peddle.

Your dispute is irrelevant as the discussion was about the US. I should have just ignored you, you're right about that. If you just want a back and forth to make nasty comments we can be done now.

I am slowly coming to this conclusion myself. Pitting two extremes against each other may be the only way to end the Trump presidency. So while I might prefer a more moderate candidate, the bottom line is I want someone who can beat Trump at his own reactionary game.

Actually no that isn't it. Studies all show that the rich grow richer because they have inherited wealth and it's all invested and under Trump their taxes were cut and so the stock market went up and they became richer.

Well you can tell your kids to save and show that of course by example but that will NOT make them rich.

Wage growth, because EVEN if your kids go to college unless they are programmers (and who knows how long that will last with H1B visas and software progression) physicians (who knows how long that will last if robotics can do surgery and we can have NPs do all the the legwork),

Your kids will not get rich unless they are in higher paid positions here, but as I stated above Queenie, even those jobs will eventually go to robotics, especially the easier surgeries.. NPs can easily do physicals.. the world is changing quickly and to be prepared your kids need to be flexible and pick careers that can segue into another field or up on the ladder.

As Harry Potter says: "it's complicated" think about it, our kids an sit in rooms and be taught via a screen, we won't need schools because kids can do school at home, like home schooling.

Prepare your kids.

Being a sound and decent human being is great but it won't make you rich.

@Tekate - The rich grow richer, probably because they’re educated, and know how to make the money work for them. Save and work hard while you’re young. This is what we are teaching our children to do. And pay your debt. And yes, Bernie has branded himself as a socialist.

Then they aren't even making enough for themselves to live on.. How many towns of 500 are there?

I have hesitated to post on this thread and will probably regret it, lol. I suspect that if Bernie is the candidate, Trump wins pretty easily. People who are moderate won't have a choice. I am pretty moderate (right of most psers, a bit left of most Texans). I absolutely will not vote for either Trump or Bernie so that equates to a vote for Trump in Texas. I have been admonished before for admitting that I am not opposed to sitting out or voting 3rd party if both candidates suck (for lack of a better word). This is the failure of a 2 party system. I think we would be much better off is there were 3 or 4 parties, left, left/moderate, right/moderate, and right.

If it really came down to Bernie or Trump, I'd vote Bernie. Trump is the most hypocritical @$$hat who has no self awareness (always seeing himself through "I'm awesome" glasses). As good a talker as Bernie is, he doesn't have a specific plan and will be fully dependent on other people to do their part to get things done. If Bernie becomes president, it's going to have consequences as to America's image in the world. The Chinese government would honestly have a field day. "Look who they elect in the end! A self-proclaimed socialist! What difference would it make in the end whether we're democratic if even Americans want socialism?" I don't think Bernie cares about that, and if it really came down to Bernie or Trump, I'd vote Bernie, but I'm hoping that we get another option.

If you want to be progressive, Warren is better than Sanders imho. Not perfect, but better. I'd much rather pick somebody who's brave enough to put pen to paper and calculate how much it'll cost, than someone who's full of hope and hot air and good intentions but does not plan.

The republicans, lean-righters, libertarians, etc that aren't raving Trump supporters give advice on who the Dem candidate should be based on whom they could vote for against Trump. (Trump's base obviously doesn't care, they're voting for him no matter what.) But here's the problem - they're looking for a Reagan-ish republican to run as a democrat. A republican from yesteryear before Trump and his sycophants took over the party. Why would or should that happen? Republicans had their chance to choose the direction of their party and they chose Trump, overwhelmingly. The Dems played it safe, chose the less progressive candidate, and lost. They would be foolish to do that again. They cannot choose a candidate that would appeal to the conservative independent or Trump apologist republican without losing the base that yearns for a progressive candidate.

I think that it's very simple why Hillary lost. And it's not because she was a centrist. People cannot stand her. She is smug and bitter and comes off as an elitist. In 2016, I believe people in swing states were able to overlook Trump's flaws because of the alternative. The rust belt is full of moderate voters and that's where the election will be decided.

wrong. My kids will get rich because my husband and I have rolled up our sleeves and work hard so that our accumulated wealth can propel the next generation. But, it did begin with hard work and sacrifice. Most wealthy people have ideas and make things happen. It’s not all under Trump. We did very well under President Clinton.

Trump is also smug and bitter with racist and misogynist tendencies as the cherry on top and he won. A billionaire who exploits all kinds of people, from hard-working contractors that he stiffs to gullible fools that paid to attend Trump U, comes off as rather elitist too.

There are many factors to Clinton's loss. She ran a crappy campaign by taking the rust-belt states for granted and not paying nearly enough attention to them. Bernie supporters felt robbed by the DNC and stayed home. Dems and the liberal media are way too soft. They need to learn to fight like right-wingers, which means fighting dirty.

$15 an hour when more and more jobs will not give anyone more than 25 hours a week and no benefits is no improvement over what is happening today.
One local big store that makes noise about paying $15 an hour expects its workers to be available at any time any shift for $15 an hour at 25 hours a week max.
Then they complain they cant not find anyone, word got around.
You can not make it at 25 hours at $15 an hour no benefits so people have multiple jobs and can not work flex hours and shifts they demand.
Even students can not do it with classes.

Hillary and company also way overestimated her appeal and thought they had it in the bag.

Is that not exactly what she said?
