Which 5 stone setting

Hi all...this is my first post after lurking around on PS for months!
Ok so I'm getting a 5 stone ring with .5 stones from WF. We are still in early stages, with stones been selected but I'm just undecided on setting. I LOVE the trellis and I equally love the u prong. Any ideas as to which setting makes the stones 'pop' more?? Also there's an option to get the band tapered at the shank of the trellis... What does this tapering achieve? I'm spending loads on this ring and want it just right, so any advice would be appreciated!! I'm a size 6.25-6.5

U prong is classic, beautiful elegant. The trellis, to me can be more metal than diamond or rather the gold is equal to the diamond in view.. I would think it would depend on what look you want.. I think the trellis is different than the U prong.. and that in itself is cool.. looking at pictures of both I think I would pick the U prong because I am more diamond less gold... but if I were to be picking this ring as the only ring on my hand (not my engagement ring also) I would pick the Trellis.. so not much help but my thoughts on a person looking at your ring :) both are gorgeous and White Flash seems a good company with very nice designs.

Hey thanks so much for the quick reply Tekate! I see what you mean totally, just wish I could try it on before purchasing. And what about the tapering at the shank?? WF asked me if I wanted it tapered. I'm like 'do I?' Decisions decisions!

I have both - a trellis on a 7 stone band and a U prong on 2 rings - a MRB 1/2 eternity & a princess bar set full eternity. THe 1/2 eternity U prong shows far more of the diamond, visually, and lets in much more light as those stones are 12 pointers, vs the very narrow band letting in less light on a very thin 1.8mm princess full eternity band (I am not sure what size they are, but small!) HOWEVER - it is so much easier to clean the U prong than the trellis setting due to less metal.

Although, I am going to plug that the trellis appeals to me simply because I just ADORE that gentle 'swoop' factor! It looks so elegant and feminine!!

Both of the WF options you are debating between are gorgeous - you will NOT go wrong with whichever one you pick!! And at the size of your stones, .50's, either will let in significant light, but overall, the U prong will let in the most light and is easier to clean.

Whether to taper or not?? Hmmm... if it were me, I'd prefer to taper to a thinner band on the inside of my hand because I don't like the feel of a lot of 'band' on the bottom, kwim? A taper cuts down on the amount of gold cost (minimally - don't think you can pay off your car w what you save!! LOL!!) and again, to me, it seems more sophisticated and feminine.

Good luck!!

Will five 1/2 carat stones fit across your finger? It wouldn't fit on mine - just food for thought.

Thanks for the input guys..so helpful! Enerchi great points...makes it sooooo hard for me because I'm living in UK and I just want to get it right because I haven't got the option of sending it back to fix things. And yes, that little bit of money saved on the tapering will come in handy!
ECF8503... My ring size is 6.25... You think 50 pointers will be too big?? I saw some pics here with the same finger size with 50 pointers and I liked the look of them :)
YSSIE...it's that very thread by FancyDiamond that started this overseas obsession in the first place!! In order to save on the 20% sales tax I'm either gonna have to catch a flight to NY to collect or get it delivered to relatives there. I hope it'll all be worth in the end! Thanks for your input ladies x

How exciting such an overseas project! I just finished mine. I live in Europe and my ring was made in LA. It was totally worth it. And that includes the customs duty

I can't give you any advice, but I personally love the trellis design.

For an eternity I prefer the u-prong, but for a 5 stone I much prefer the look of a trellis setting. There is something so elegant and fluid about the design!

Yeah I am now leaning towards trellis also ....will just have to clean it more! It's such a shame there are no online vendors here that offer great service...bob Hoskins has been wonderful and patient while I bombard him with questions!

Oh that's funny!! I loved FD's thread too - I was looking to make my mum a ring around the time she posted, and her pics were the ones that made me definitively pick "fivestone" over "eternity" ::)

My mum's stones are slightly graduated, from 40-50pointers, size 6.5, and I don't think it's too big or overly blingy at all. The stones are antiques though, so they face up a bit smaller and take up a bit less room than MRBs would... I went with a U-prong to let more light in from the sides, and four prongs holding each stone instead of the usual two shared prongs for security and also because they can be smaller and more delicate face-up than shared prongs, which must necessarily be larger and can't be clawed.

She doesn't complain about any discomfort and she didn't wear a ring before that so I don't think the stones extend too far across the finger for her, but I'm sure this is a very personal thing!! I do think the trellis inherently spaces the stones out further than the U-prong design (and FD noted this too) so if "fitting" all five stones across your finger comfortably is a question the U-prong is likely the safer choice. WF made my mum's ring as well and it turned out fabulously:

Yssie your mom's ring is awesome! I hope my girls will do the same for me when they are older (they're 5&7!). I was also debating between full eternity and 5 stone...seeing all the gorgeous rings on here made me decide on the 5 stone. Here in UK, they are super expensive so I opted for WF. I'm really really nervous because I've never spent this much money online before (rather my husband hasn't!)
One question about the band...did you get the one advertised on their website or did you have changes made to it? FancyDiamond mentioned her band was 'chunkier'

WF did CADs so I'm not sure what the stock band would've looked like. It's definitely on the thicker/"chunkier" side compared to the first CAD they made though, and I assume that first one was based on stock?

Layla,

1. Glad that you made the choice of 5-stone over eternity. 5-stone rings are better for larger size stones in terms of comfort, cost, and safety (from damage).
2. My Trellis is size 6.25. The 50-pt diamonds fit the setting perfecly with no gap between fingers. Furthermore, the ring is very comfotable. Thus, 50-pt diamons in this setting will work for you.
3. In terms of which setting allows more light, I think they are equal. I can't tell, as the diamonds are blinding me. Remember, both settings have open side view. so enough light is let in. I particularly enjoy the side view of the the Trellis. This setting gets the most attention and compliments.
4. The first Trellis that WF made for me had the thicker shank. I later requested the thinner version due to slight discomfort with the thicker shank ad the more graceful/dainitier appearance of the thinner version.

I love my Trellis ring, and think that you will be happy with this setting (50-pts and thin shank).

FancyDiamond! Oh my God I've been admiring both your 5 stones from oceans afar! So so stunning! I actually bought a full eternity 3 ctw but returned it because 1. I couldn't close my fingers, 2.the diamonds at the bottom were constantly knocking and 3. I came on PS in search of full eternities and saw your bling! 5 big diamonds totally make more of a statement. So the trellis that's in your pictures is tapered at the shank? I couldn't tell. Gorgeous rings though...wear in good health x
