Hello!

I am brand new to these forums, hoping to find some help sourcing a newly cut old mine or antique cushion. I'm looking solely for newly cut to respect my family's cultural values (sadly since I love the true antiques)!

Any advice on good vendors/cutters/online shops to look at would be really appreciated. Conveniently located in NYC if that's helpful!

Definitely call Adam @oldworlddiamonds. His old cut selection is amazing and if you are open to a true antique stone he has some juicy cushions in at the moment too.:kiss2:
Good luck!

Would your family not want you to have what you want @oldsoul ?

It’s a shame that you feel you can’t have a true old cut. Missy & I went to OWD recently, and wow, their inventory is amazing, and Adam was lovely. I’m a recent convert to old cuts, and I can’t sing their praises highly enough.

He had an amazing cushion that I was seriously contemplating had I not had the good fortune to acquire Bella.

Thanks, all! Unfortunately their hesitation comes from not knowing where the stone as been in the past, and the outcome of the marriage/life of previous owner(s). I know in their mind they're trying to protect me, so doing my best to think about it from their perspective!

Really appreciate all the great suggestions and will look into them.

For reference, I'm looking for around a 1.25-1.5 carat, I think I/H color and clarity matters less so long as there's no glaring spots or lines.

I like to think my stone is so beautiful, that her original owner was as much in love with it, as she was with her husband, and that they had a long and happy marriage. I know her this is true of her previous owner (@missy) and it brings me so much happiness to know that. I am continuing the legacy, and hopefully in time, future generations will wear, love and cherish her too.

Thanks all! Will read and respond when I get home from work (oops!).

In the meantime, my boyfriend came across the American diamond cutting school in Florida. Has anyone worked with them? Wondering if it could be an option since I might be able to get more of that true antique style since I can potentially ask for less symmetry?

Do you have a link?

Nevermind, just gave them a quick call and they said they don’t cut to this style since it doesn’t make economical sense :/

OWD or DBL would be my first steps. Next, AV & VC.

Some Estate jeweler’s can tell you the history of a stone/ring; wouldn’t hurt to check some out. I know @ohsomethingshiny found her beautiful Lucy (and Ricky) at an Estate jeweler in Tampa, FL on a whim!
They have some really beautiful stuff, too!!

Methinks they aren't aware of Pricescope and current trends!

Depending on the religions culture, here are a few cures I've seen applied for preloved jewelery: dipping in holy water and being blessed, being blessed, burial in the ground, praying, giving gifts to ancestors at temple, place over selenite and salt and think good intentions, wrap in sacred animal skin and cleanse with shaman over an open fire, and wrap in red cloth and bring to monk to bless and cleanse.

Bottom line. In my experience, most cultures and religions have ways to deal with potential bad energy.

Edited to add. Slaughtering a sacred animal to give a gift of life to the earth.

Oh, @Matthews1127 is right. I wouldn’t count out estate pieces as an option, especially for old cuts. I love my Lucy and it’s awesome to know that she’s been loved and adored with a rich almost 100 year history.

I'm sure they'd come around, but I think I also wouldn't feel right thinking they might be biting their tongue the rest of our lives? I've come across OWD in my search but I'm so worried that if I go I'll love a true antique too much!

That's really awesome! I actually contacted someone on Instagram (forget her handle) named Erica? She was so nice but said histories were hard to come by :( It's too bad my family doesn't have any to pass down!!

Just curious, is there any way you could cleanse or ceremonially purify a genuine old cut so that way you could have what you want without them worrying about it?
I have an OEC and I enjoy wondering about its history - is it in its original setting, who wore it, what was she like, was she happy etc.
I'm not spiritual though so I don't have any concerns about previous negative relationship energy.
And in answer to your question, most newly, ideal cut antique cushions do seem to show that strong maltese cross effect. Not entirely sure why actually because not all antique cushions or old mine brilliants show that. You might prefer the European rounds instead? they usually show a flower petal look under the table and snowflake effect round the edges which is very appealing to those of us who like it.

Thank you @JPie! I've come across august vintage diamonds before, but found the cuts in the center are much more focussed on four cuts... if that makes sense? I really like the 8 cuts or when they aren't even at all!

That makes complete sense! I don't know if you'll find that style in a newly cut diamond; it's generally the antique stones that are cut that way. Would you be okay with an antique if the dealer happened to know the provenance? Sometimes there's no bad mojo at all and the heirs simply didn't like the style.
