I’ve got a 5.9mm I/SI1 OEC that I want to set in a yellow gold necklace. I want something super simple because my other necklace is fairly intricate (photo below).

My plan is to give this necklace to my daughter as a college graduation gift or for some other milestone, but I plan to wear it until then. :lol-2:

So, here’s what I have already:

Here are the designs I’m considering, all in yellow gold (possibly 22k), with either a beaded 1.2mm ball chain or a delicate twisted link chain. Which would you choose??

Option #1:

I like the first two options. But your current necklace is AMAZING! That's like a dream come true piece for me--is there a thread on it?

This is ironic but I am making 2 pendants, too! One larger setting and one smaller! Both of mine will be in white metal, though. I will mention that I am resetting my 6mm diamond (which was in a milgrain bezel) into something that will make it appear a little larger because it honestly looks out of balance with my other diamond jewelry. I just haven't 100% decided on the smaller design yet.

I like the clover pendant with milgrain, and I like #3 assuming it would be round. The only thing I don't like about #1 and #4 is the way the loops are just stuck on the bezels for the chain.

I'd use a classic cable chain and not the ball chain, though. I think the style is better. I think of the ball chains more on very casual pieces like dog tag necklaces, for example.

Thanks @diamondseeker2006. Do you mind sharing (in general terms) what you are planning to do with the 6mm stone? I won’t lie....I’m worried it may be too small, which is why I’m considering a soft square shape bezel that will make the overall pendant larger. I see your point about the ball chain. I just feel like cable or rolo is so “expected”, and while I want simple, I still want something visually interesting, kwim? I’m kind of shocked at how indecisive I’ve been about deciding which direction to go, which is why I finally posted this thread! :oops2:

Another vote for #1. The diamond pattern is stunning, and goes very well with the setting. How much does the cushion bezel setting add to the size of the diamond?

Square bezel first one. Love ebbbg now to see the facets.

Perhaps it is my age (50+), I too love your current pendant and chain, and would not consider re-setting the main stone.

However I would choose #4 if simplicity is desired.

DK :))

I like #2 but only if it comes with milgrain (which should be possible right?)...

I like the thickness of option #1 but the delicateness of option #2.

Can I throw out a new idea, based on kind of a combo of your options? What about doing a Dahlia as a pendant, either exactly as-is or with exaggerated “petals” to give it a bit more presence and visual interest? I mocked up how it would look as just a pendant:

I'm with @ILikeShiny. The Dahlia. But, otherwise, I really like #2.

How about a prong in bezel hexagon?

I don’t know. I haven’t reached out to anyone to discuss. I wanted to have a clear idea of what I wanted first.

Now that’s a really cool idea!!! Do you think it would still look good in yellow gold?

Just thinking of doing something like a small halo with an airline, maybe. I've been indecisive, too. I'll try to email you today or tomorrow with some of my ideas. Remind me if I forget. I need to catch you up on my pendant stone changes! lol!

Yes, I am 100% with you about a plain chain, as I adore your current necklace so much! I am going to use my smaller DBTY chain on my larger pendant. I have no great ideas of what to do with the other one, so it may end up with a cable chain. It's very hard to find repro antique style chains and I have looked.

She's not resetting. She is making a second pendant in yellow gold that will be a more simple design.

Sounds like your wheels have been turning! Please do email me! We can be indecisive together! I just picked up a yellow gold chain almost identical to the platinum one in my CvB piece to go with a yellow gold seed pearl starburst necklace I got to go with the dress I’m wearing my my daughter’s Bat Mitzvah next August. Have you stalked eBay at all?

Yup, I’d never take that necklace apart! I just want something much simpler for more casual wear that will be appropriate to give to my now 12 year old daughter in a few years (or more).

You know, that is something I haven't done! That's awesome that you found a necklace on ebay!

This would give you a little more diameter than the ones above while being very simple but unique. Caysie has told me she can do it with a 6mm stone, but I wasn't going with YG. I'll look for other ideas and will be in touch later, maybe tonight because I am going out of town later this morning. I just know I felt like my pendant in a bezel was just so little, and I think you'd feel that way, too, because your diamond rings are larger than mine.

That’s stunning, but I truly want “everyday” size. It’s so hard to picture scale. I think I told you that the CvB pendant was much bigger than I’d pictured in my mind. It’s 20mm, which is the size of a nickel. When I put a nickel with the chain, it looked good to me, but when it arrived in a blaze of bling, it looked much, much larger (to me). I truly want understated, so I’m struggling to figure out exactly what size a 5.9mm stone will end up being as I consider how to set it.

Have you considered getting a faux stone to wear and get a feel of the size that you want? CZs are pretty cheap and might be worth trying before you spend a few k on the setting.

I actually have considered that, but the issue is that I can’t tell how much extra visual width the settings will give the stone, kwim?

Consider getting something just for a feel... it doesn’t have to be an exact match. Simple bezel or something fancier. Even if it’s not a perfect match to what you are considering, it will help you visualise and also to get a sense of what you would actually prefer irl.

Thanks, icy-jade for the link, so I can see exactly how various pendant sizes look like against body. Definitely, 6mm pendant is way too small, unless I want to stack with something else.
Yennyfire, I held back sharing my thought of the diamond size. Now, since others start discussing diamond size, I can chime in too. My first thought - I am afraid that 5.9mm may be a little too small. I know you want to buy it for your young daughter. However, she won’t be wearing it until she is older. Since she will be adult size for a long time, perhaps consider the diamond size for an adult instead of a child. Besides, you will be wearing it yourself for a long while. From the eBay link, I think 7-8mm size is more appropriate. To me, 7mm diamond is good for everyday as well.
BTW - whatever setting design you choose, make sure that the pendant sits flat on your body with minimal or no flipping.
DK’s Caysie diamond pendant is to die for. The extra bezel width also helps.

I already have the diamond, so getting a larger one is not an option and having had a 7.5mm OEC (in a three stone) so I know that as long as my 5.9mm ends up in a setting that's around 7.5mm, I'll be perfectly happy and I think that's do-able with most of the settings I like. ;)2

I have other settings to show you, but the Astrid would not be 20 mm with a 5.9mm stone. She's done a lot of big stones in that setting and those are the pictures I could find. But it wouldn't look like that with a smaller stone. I just prefer Astrid in yg, and I am planning white metal for my smaller pendant.
