He was not innocent. Davis was part of the criminal gang that was robbing a homeless man. One of the gang shot the cop. He is therefore guilty. This guy was not a saint or innocent bystander.

For those of you who are against the death penalty for any reason, Davis was not the only person who was executed last night. Remember that white supremasist who dragged that black man behind his truck? Do you feel he should have been spared as well?

Davis was given a rare opportunity last year to prove his innocence.

Where is the compassion for the innocent people whose lives were ruined by these two men?

I didn't follow this case, but here are my thoughts based on what little I read here.

We've already gathered that Obama isn't the most responsible President, given past actions. Nothing new.

If the man was innocent of the physical act of murder, it SUCKS that nothing was done. If he was a member of a group that caused the murder, then he is not innocent, but he is not guilty of murder, so he doesn't deserve something as strong as the death penalty.

I believe capital punishment should be reserved for those who have no proper view of humanity, compassion and pity. Someone like the man who drug another behind his truck, or Charles Manson, or Danny Rollins.... these are not people who should be able to return to any normal kind of life. They shouldn't be able to to enjoy sunlight, or jokes, or games, or a warm shower after a long day. They should find no comfort, since they allowed none. That is just how I feel. Did this man deserve that? I doubt it. I don't believe he was heartless, ruthless, or cold. I think he was in the wrong place at the wrong time doing the wrong thing. Which is a pity.

Oh really? How is President Obama irresponsible? Do enlighten us!

I actually thought about this while waiting for the SCOTUS decision last night. As much as I would have loved for President Obama to intervene and do what I morally think would have been the right thing to do, I think it would have in fact been quite irresponsible for him to stick his nose in something that he really didn't have any legal authority to change.

I just googled this case, how horrifying and tragic. I am happy he was executed as he was beyond all hope of ever being a normal member of society. When he was asked if he had any regrets, he said no and that he would do it again. MONSTER.

Yes, I believe that a life prison sentence is sufficient, even for sociopathic white supremacists. I do not, personally, support the death sentence for anyone.
+1.

I do not think we have the right to take anyone's life as punishment for a crime.

Oh DF-I love how you Republicans don't let facts get in the way of your convincing "arguments"! In case you're actually interested in the facts, here's a nice infographic comparing the amount of $ spent by President Bush vs. President Obama: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/24/opinion/sunday/24sun4.html

Funny thing about facts: they're not liberal or conservative-they just ARE. That's something the current anti-intellectual, anti-science, anti-REALITY Republicans seem to forget.

And yes, that clip is disgusting. Republicans are just SO pro-life, amirite?! As long as you're not born, that is. ;))

Love ya, Thing!

"An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind," has been repeating in my head over and over lately. My stomach turns at the thought of Rick Perry for president...

Right, because the Democrats are denying climate-change and evolution and pushing abstinence-only education!

I used to lobby in DC, and I can say definitively that neither side is great at fact-checking, or seeking out quality knowledgable staffers, or exploring issues beyond the facts as we, the lobbyists, presented them. The three issues you named are certainly beloved headliner issues, but there are plenty of other issues where the Dems are happy to lean on fuzzy math.

I have been catching up on all of this. I am very sad.

It hits close to home because my Elizabeth who raised me, her brother got life for something he didn't do. He spent his life in jail, was a model citizen, became a pastor, a mentor. He got out at the age of 60?? He was thrown in jail at 18... He was at the wrong place, at the wrong time, and bam got life. Tyrone Werts. It's a very well known case.

I am very sorry for Troy and his family.

I believe you on that, but the proudly anti-science stance is unique to the current Republican party.

I don't think proud or accidental ignorance adds up to good policy, either way.

I am sorry I didn't help you to catch up, Lisa, but things got very hectic last night! I knew that once the facts started to fly, that you would easily be able to discover everything you ever wanted to know about the Troy Davis case.

I am sorry that someone you loved had this kind of situation hit close to home. Wrongful convictions are inevitable. However, if there is no capital punishment, even though someone may spend a life in prison for something he did not do -losing his youth and the ability to marry, have children, get an education, work at a fulfilling job-at least the essence of life has not been taken from him. And there is a chance that that he may even go free one day.

But capital punishment cannot be reversed when someone realizes that an error has been made.

Agreed, but I prefer elected officials with a solid grasp of the facts and concepts of basic science.

Thin skin, eh? Doesn't seem like anyone is even close to busting out the Nazi analogies. But maybe you know some tea baggers who could come post about Obama being a fascist? ;))
