Tips and hints for purchasing a yellow diamond for engagement ring?

I am glad that you were able to try different styles and love the pear shape! I feel that they are so romantic and gorgeous, especially in yellow!
Alright, I do prefer the 0.51 because of its citrusy color and no flouro, but I would ask Leibish for a side by side comparison picture in different env (sunlight, indoors, etc.) I do like you last pick by DBL, it does look like a lovely stone, bigger size which is a plus- I would ask David for his opinion re the faint fluorescence, it really shouldn't be much visible, but you would stlll want to make sure that it looks yellow in direct sunlight, or when exposed to UV light. You can ask DBL for a quote of the setting, but DK is still a great choice for it!

Yes this is a reputable company. I can't find the $250 off but it popped up when I first visited it earlier today. I wouldn't have them do the setting. But do could make you a lovely single (or double!!) Halo I would think with 2k for the budget

Yes I saw that. But it's only valid if you purchase the stone AND setting :( still a decent price.

Leibish also has $250 off

I like the one I posted and the second two you posted. I'd probably want FIY just to make sure the color popped. But it's really up to you I think. Have you emailed do for a quote? Are you going to copy that Tiffany setting or that HG setting.

I have not, but need to. I actually think I prefer the Tiffany setting. After trying it on, I think the Heidi Gibson might be too "busy". I also think the Tiffany is more classic. The only other design idea I'd entertained was this one which I saw on DK's instagram. I suspect it would be relatively expensive though. Can't hurt to find out.

Yes, I believe most of the yellows I looked at yesterday were Fancy Intense. I'd have to look at some images to see how FY compared. The .53 is actually bigger in dimensions anyway.

Which do you prefer between the .50 you posted and the .53? Same color grade, minimal price difference, with the dimensions on the .53 being ever slightly larger (guessing this wouldn't matter to the eye?). Only thing I notice about the .53 is that the GIA chart shows quite a few inclusions visible from the bottom. Do you think these would be visible from the face?

The 50 is a vs1 so I think it's fine. The concert I had with the 53 was that it's not very deep. I worry it may not be very brilliant

Ok that's good to know. That's not something I have a ton of experience with.

This may be an obvious question, but how does insurance work when you purchase the stone from one dealer, and have it set by another. Obviously the package would be insured when we mail it to have set, but do we need to have the gem itself insured with a company before sending it off? In case something goes wrong while setting? I know we'd probably want the entire ring insured after it was done.

I like the 0.5 FIY that Neil found and I also like the 0.51 VVS2 from Leibish. I agree with Neil re the 0.53, I also prefer the color of the 0.5 from enchanted diamonds.
I would stick to the Tiffany type halo setting. The other one is pretty, but it will be more expensive due to the side stones and I think that a colorless diamond halo will really enhance the FIY center diamond + boost the size. I would reach out to DK for a quote.

You can insure a loose stone through Jewelers Mutual.

They don't really insure "loose" stones, but they'll insure your stone while setting along with the setting price insured too

I'm inclined to agree a halo will be best. Gets you size and will accentuate the color of the center. I'd also see if he can do a little cup.

Neil, can you explain please? I have a stone that's not set and is currently insured, or so I thought, through JM..

Thank you :) I'm glad to have this board for input.

The one other question regarding the Tiffany style setting I had was what color the halo should be. I'll want yellow gold prongs obviously, but there's also the option of white diamond pave on the band, with a yellow diamond halo. Similar to this Diamonds by Lauren design. I suppose this boils down to personal preference.

Another option would be to have a plain yellow gold or white gold band, while only putting the pave on the halo. This could be a more budget friendly option. I could ask David how much both would be.

I would do colorless diamonds halo + shank. One issue with yellow diamonds in halo is matching exactly the color of the center stone and more often the center stone and its color "gets lost". You will have a beautiful FIY diamond, I would really highlight that color. As Neil suggested, I would do a little yellow gold cup beneath the center + have the prongs in YG, but everything else I would do in WG and colorless stones. Lastly, yellow diamonds meleè, especially FIY is more expensive.

The only time of do a a yellow Halo is if you were doing a double hLo and wanted in inner yellow Halo and an outer white Halo

HI All!
Just wanted to stop in and say that a cup, per se, is not going to do the diamond a favor. In many cases, we do use some gold beneath the stone, but it's not a "cup"- and the methods are far more complex than a simple closing of the bottom of the stone.
Enclosing the bottom of the diamond is pretty much a guarantee you'll never be able to clean it- so it might look good in the showcase, or jewelry box- but not for the long term.

Yes a cup is a big or a generic term and I agree an enclosed but of metal isn't a good idea. But they can put a bit of metal around the stone without enclosing it. That was more so what I meant by cup. Not an enclosed bowl lol. But you're right , good to be clear.
I like this setting. It would cause a gap in your ring and e ring. Bug I'm a gap whore so I support it.

I do like that setting. It would be nice to make the basket a little more interesting with some sort of floral design. The Tiffany design is really plain in that respect. Is there anything specific I need to mention in my email to David? I assume the specs of the stone we are expecting to purchase, our budget, and then maybe an image of the Tiffany ring with any other suggestions and modifications.

If I'm the David you're referring to, just please mention this thread.

I'd show him that profile pic and say you want a Halo like this one he made
https://www.instagram.com/p/BSR4I17AJa2/

Then ask him the price of a single Halo with some gold prongs and gold basket inside the Halo, and just for fun, what it would cost to do that with a double Halo. :)

Ok I emailed him, so we will see what I hear back! I used the dkinla2@gmail address. I saw some others say it took awhile to hear back. *crosses fingers*

Still waiting to hear back from David Klass on this.

One thought I did have (probably out of budget) is a colorless diamond halo with a yellow diamond pave on the shank. Shank would be yellow gold. Has anyone ever seen this done?
