Thoughts on this stone?

I would absolutely not go with this stone. Table > depth is worrisome, and the picture/video don't look great.

Can he get a refund on his deposit? We would be happy to find you something much much better if you tell us your budget and preferred color/clarity.

Just FYI, the following are recommended ranges to stay within (and also have him use the HCA calculator under "tools"). Any stone scoring less than 2 is worth looking into, and anything above 2 is a 'reject'. The HCA tells you how well angles and proportions are working together.

Table: 54-57
Depth: 60-62.4
Crown: 34-35
Pavillion: 40.6-40.8

Hi,

I’m not sure I would have to ask. What makes it worrisome?? Also I didn’t notice anything in the photo or video. Do you mind letting me know the issues so I can tell him

The table is too big, and the angles are not complimentary, so it won't be very lively in real life. It will not have the sparkle and "life" that well cut stones have. It likely looks good in jewelers lights, but will not look great in person compared to a better cut. Compare it with images of ideal cut stones. Here is an I colored ideal cut stone. look how clear the H&A pattern is one this one and how "crisp" it is compared to yours. Obviously video techniques are different so you can't compare those, but the still images make it pretty easy to see the differences. Like I said, I don't know your budget, but we can definitely help you/him find something much much better.

PS. if budget is a concern, go down in clarity. Clarity is significantly less important than cut in terms of performance, and as long as stones are eye clean then you won't see any differences between VS2 vs VVS1. You will pay significantly more for an invisible difference. So he could likely get a much better cut stone for the same price by moving to VS2 or SI1 (eye clean) clarity.

If you look at them side by side or one after the other it might be easier. I circled the huge 'dead' space in the middle that happens from having a much too large table and non-complimentary angles. Also, look at the "arrows", which are not defined at all in the one he bought, but are very clear in the WF stone.

The GIA report comment doesn't sound good either.

It is a very flat top stone that will lack fire, with a large “dead” area in the middle because the table is larger than the depth. Also, you don’t want a table that large. I think VVS clarity is overkill. They are charging a premium for that and it is not a desirable diamond. Even if this was of better proportions I would suggest you go down in clarity and up in color where you will actually see it.
