Hope everyone's having a fantastic day! Been researching diamonds for a couple of weeks now, but somehow just came across this amazing forum. I also just came across HCA, so I am officially more confused haha

I thought i was set on a diamond, but it scored over a 4 HCA, so I'm suddenly pivoting.

The new one that I've recently come across has the following specs, so I'm curious to get thoughts from some of you amazing contributors! Thanks in advance for your feedback

1.80, H, VS2
table: 57
depth: 62.2
crown angle: 36
pavilion angle: 40.6

Welcome to Pricescope,

We typically want to stay within these ranges for an ideal cut diamond to maximize light performance.

Depth: 60 - 62.3
Table: 54 - 57
Crown: 34 - 35
Pavillion : 40.6 - 40.8

Thanks so much for the response @jp201845. Given what you just shared, does the fact that the crown angle of the diamond I'm looking at is 36 make it not worth consideration?

The first step in searching for a diamond is finding one with great proportions using the chart I posted. But I should add the relationship between the Crown and Pavillion angles are very important. These two angles have to compliment each other. So say a shallow crown will work best with steeper Pavillion Angle of 40.8 to 40.9. And vice versa a steep crown like the one you are considering will possibly work well with a Pavillion Angle of 40.6. Considering the stone you are looking at has a crown of 36 I wouldn't discredit the diamond right away. The next step in the process is to ask the vendor you are dealing with for Aset, Idealscope and Hearts & Arrows images. What these images will tell you is how well the diamond is cut ( cut is king) The cut of a diamond is what gives it that nice sparkle, colored flashes and brilliance. If your vendor can not supply these images then at that point I would look at another option you don't want to buy a diamond blind without images.....the images tell the whole story.

I should also add 40.9 is ok for the Pavillion but you will only see that on an AGS report since GIA does rounding @ 0.2 increments

I definitely think you should reject the original one since it scored above 2 on the HCA. What are the dimensions of the new stone, and have you run it through the HCA?

That is the one new thing I've learnt today! :))

(I knew about the rounding but it never occurred to me to think/realise the increments!)

And the GIA for the Crown rounding would be @ 0.5 increments.

What are the measurements (LxWxD) of this stone? I ask because my 1.85 ct diamond has very similar specs to the one you are considering and has an HCA score of 1.7, so I am wondering if the numbers were input properly.

The dimensions of the new stone are listed in the original post (also below). It scored a 1.8. Next step would be to check if blue nile, where the diamond is being sold offers Aset, Idealscope and Hearts & Arrows images.

Thanks so much for the education. I'll certainly take all that you mentioned into consideration. I wonder if blue nile provides Aset, Idealscope and Hearts & Arrows images.

Apologies...I misread your original post. Mine is 1.85 G, VVS2, Table 57, Depth 61.9, CA 36, PA 40.6 and it performs beautifully. But with GIA averaging and rounding, there is no guarantee they would perform the same. Obviously pics, videos and advanced images will help determine performance, but I would say it is worth ordering to view IRL since BN has a generous return policy. GL

Thanks so much for sharing your experience. Ordering it, then returning might be the way to go, but i'm wondering if i should continue searching before ordering anything. With that said, i tend to overdo it with researching and have a hard time making decisions, especially with a purchase as important as this. Below is the link to the specific diamond referenced, so would love any additional feedback that can be given. Thanks again for your help!

You really need and aset or Idealscope for that stone IMO. Not sure if BN will provide either of them though.

It doesn't appear that blue nile provides wither, so i'll have to figure that piece out. Thanks for the feedback.

I am far from an expert, but the video appears to show some darkness under the table around some of the arrows (in the center and particularly around 12:00-3:00) . I agree with others that additional images would be helpful. Did you inquire about Hearts & Arrows images? Most vendors usually have those and it might tell a bit more about those areas (though still not as much as ASET/IS). Of course, the obstruction and/or leakage might not be noticeable to you IRL.

I appreciate you taking the time to check the link out. I'll inquire about Heart and Arrows images; hopefully they can provide those. I must admit that i'm certainly more concerned that i was at the beginning of this search. I was under the impression that as long as it was an ideal cut that i was good to go haha

Yes...there is a lot more to diamonds than just the 4 Cs and GIA ExExEx is a broad range that includes some specs that will not perform as well as others. But you've come to the right place. The experts here will help guide you.

I don't think BN provides any advanced images, which is annoying. I think it's probably safer to find one within the recommended parameters if you need to stick with BN.
