The TRR Rescue Thread: Show your treasures!

I ended up with a bunch of promotional credit to RealReal that expired last night so as much as I don’t want to admit it, I gave into the marketing and bought a ring. It has the most odd specs that I’ve seen. The center stone isn’t accounted for and then at the bottom in the “non-weighted” diamonds, it lists a 5.8mm so I’m guessing that’s the middle stone. I can’t tell which diamonds are brilliant cut — most look euro to me. The 3 largest stones don’t appear to have the big puffy crowns that I love but we’ll see.

I figure I can always return, especially since the specs are so wonky but it looks like a pretty substantial ring for the price. What do you all think?

Calling all PSers for input! Decision making is so so hard for me! I just received the ring and it’s sparkly to my eye but so on the fence given the price.

Pros
The setting is weighty - I love that
Looks pretty sparkly

Cons
Center stone is warm. The other two stones are lighter
The 3 center stones measure at 5mm (no idea where TRR got 5.8mm)
Under a loupe, there are a few nibbles to the girdle

I’m very cost sensitive and for this purchase, I’d want to know I could sell it for something close to what I purchased for (between $3000 and $3600) because sometimes life happens. I’m still learning and definitely don’t have the eye of some of you for good diamond cutting patterns, etc.

I’d LOVE some input to consider as I make my decision…IMG_4771.jpegIMG_4772.jpegIMG_4774.jpegIMG_4775.jpegIMG_4776.jpegIMG_4777.jpegIMG_4778.jpegIMG_4780.jpeg

For me, personally, it's a like it, don't love it. I want to like the design, but it reads a little higgledy-piggledy.

That is exactly what was making me pause but I couldn’t put into words what it was. I like the idea and concept but my eye isn’t sure where to go. I like separate parts of it but when looking at the whole thing, there’s no “centerpiece” or anything taking my eye in a fluid direction.

Once I can get things into words, it’s far easier to decide. Thank you for weighing in!

Isn't it funny how just one or two little things can make or break a design? Personally, I think it's the way the center 3 stones are set. Something just doesn't seem cohesive with the rest of the design. It has mashup vibes, even though I know it's not.

Exactly! And the 2 smaller stones that are offset and bezeled are distracting now that I’m looking at it.

I think it is throwing you off bc you expect it to be an Edwardian or art deco design but I’m pretty sure it’s from the 1950s, which was a different era stylistically. I like it as a statement piece. A 1950s dinner ring. I like it for what it is and it should probably be appreciated for what it is. It’s a big look and well made. I like it better in your pics than I did in the TRR pics.

I don’t know about resale. 1950s aren’t as desirable and you’ve seen a few people already who aren’t in love. It’s rare IMO to find pieces you can truly recoup costs on. Private sales are rough. I’d keep it if you love it and send it back if you do t.

Another vote for a return if you don’t love it! I think you can do better for something in the $3,000-3600 range.

@Django74th

I am an impulse shopper and always looking for good deals. Your ring is a fair deal for retail. I personally would not spend anything over 1500 for that ring, but also, I have the opportunity to go treasure hunting and finding those deals. I don’t know if you shop pawn shops, etc.
I like the ring. I just don’t like the price, lol. You ask about reselling it close to what you paid, if the need arises. Do you have a platform to sell it yourself? I sell the stuff I no longer like through eBay and let me tell you, most eBay shoppers are looking for a hot deal! If they thought this ring was a hot deal, they would have found it at TRR and you would not own it right now, lol.

I could use some unbiased opinions! Joining in with those who made a purchase before my $500 site credit from a previous purchase expired.
I am not totally convinced about either one, so I need your thoughts please.

1) Beverley K 18k rose gold pink sapphire and morganite (?) Deco inspired diamond halo ring. It is a standard offering, not one of a kind or custom. I usually stick with unique or vintage rings, but I thought this one was worth a try. I’m still not sure how I feel about pink morganites (though it looks similar to pink sapphires). **Note TRR says it is pink tourmaline, but the BeverlyK site says it is Morganite, so I assume it is Morganite.

I think it is quite pretty; but I think my hesitation is that it might look a bit like costume jewelry. What do you think?

For pricing, it was on TRR for $1495 which seemed like a great price. $5800 is the retail new price for this ring in this 18k gold version. The 14k version is $4700 new. There is a 14k version preowned version on another site in white gold for $2700.

2) [Photos in the next post]
18k Yellow gold 3 Row diamond bracelet with beaded trim.

There was no size listed, no measurements at all, so I took a chance.
At first I thought it fit but was too large to wear with my other bracelets (VCA XS, Cartier Love 16, Clash 14, JUC 15). However, then I remembered that I have some bracelets one size larger and it matches ok with these. I have one JUC size 16, two small pave Loves size 17 and one Medium Clash size 15 also - and it is flush with all of these - however, the small pave Loves are too dainty to wear with it, and the size 15 Clash is WG, so it doesn’t match, but it looks ok with the JUC 16.

Visually, I think it is pretty and very well-made. The hinge is cheaper looking than designer brand level, but not very noticeable. I was worried that it would look too close to the VCA 3 row Perlee diamond bangle, but luckily the clasp is totally different. I like the retro, classic vibe.
The stats:
Weight: 23.3 g (feels weighty but comfortable, heavier than a VCA Perlee Clover bracelet, a little heavier than a regular Cartier Love bracelet, lighter than a regular size Cartier pave Love bracelet)
Diamonds:
Carat Weight: 2.79 per TRR (HOWEVER: the bracelet says D 3.19 inside, which I think means Diamond weight 3.19 ct)
Stone Count: 244 (I did not verify).
Stone Shape: Round Brilliant (ACTUALLY- appears to be transitional, at least most of them, which makes me love it more - I love vintage and more unique).
Color Grade: Near Colorless
Clarity Grade: Very Slightly Included, Slightly Included
The diamond quality looks really good, similar to my VCA and Cartier pave diamonds which are VS or VVS, I believe. I do see one slightly less lively diamond in the mix.
There are some hallmarks but too small for me to see.

For pricing: I paid $3750 and they state the retail value as $7125 (we know TRR values are all over the place, but it seems reasonable if not a little low - for a retail price).

Do you think I should keep one over the other or neither?

As you can probably guess, like most of us, I have a full collection of all sorts of jewelry and don’t really need anything (so just buying something for fun so I don’t waste the credit). If I returned I would just need to pick something else. The good thing with TRR is that they can have all kinds of unpredictable and unique treasures from one day to the next.

I would be absolutely shocked if that first ring were morganite. I know TRR isn't always the most trustworthy but it just doesn't look at all like any morganite I've seen..... I'm no expert, though!

I think they're both lovely pieces. To me the bracelet looks a little big in circumference, but I'm more thinking of how it would feel on me. How does it feel on you?

Which will you wear more? By your description, it sounds like the bracelet is more limited in its wearability. As an aside, it’s not the first time TRR has gotten a carat weight wrong even when it is stamped right inside. :wall:

I don’t think the ring looks like costume at all. It looks like morganite to me and the pink sapphire is really pretty. I love the bold “shield/target” design, and looks fantastic as an index finger ring with your engagement ring.

In my opinion, while it may not be custom, the ring not something you see everyday in the general public (at least not in my experience) whereas that style bangle is more common.

I vote ring, but go with your gut. Ignore all the peripheral noise, what are you most drawn to?

I love the ring! Beverly K was a very respected and popular designer in pricescope 10-15 years ago when people bought a lot more designer pieces of that ilk. I’ve always wanted something from their line. This one is spectacular and fits right in with your diamond ring collection… which, of course, we need details about! Those rings are amaxing!

The bracelet is gorgeous as well but the ring stole my heart.

Thank you for much for weighing in! I really didn't know what to expect (and I was surprised that the ring fits me perfectly for my index finger, which is a harder finger to find a comfortable fit on).

Now I am confused about the center stone, the only exact match I found online was with a morganite center, but now that I look more, I think these rings were probably available as mix and match (gold color, 14k or 18K, and various center and accent stones). For the ones with pink sapphires, I saw a couple that say tourmaline and some that say morganite. Since the one on the Beverley K site is morganite, I assumed that was correct, but now I see in the fine print that it can be ordered in different specs/combinations, so it could really be tourmaline.

Is there a way to tell if it is tourmaline or morganite? The color almost exactly matches the pink sapphire bezel, but is a little more peach-pink in the sunlight compared to the pink sapphires.

I was worried that the bracelet was a little big in circumference, but I gave it a second thought because I have this same-sized JUC that I have been looking for a bracelet to pair with (the one-size down JUC is just a little small on me), and when I tried on a couple of bracelets in my collection to look for a size match I realized that I had somehow outgrown a couple of them in the last 6 months or so. I have been trying to gain a little weight/muscle, which is working apparently, but on the other hand, I guess I don't need to size up even one more size until/unless I get there.

I appreciate the help. Now I am leaning towards keeping the ring! I don't have any gemstone rings other than a couple of blue sapphires with old cut diamonds and one antique dinner ring with a peridot along with diamonds. The idea does have a little sentimental value for me because my mom used to have a lot of cheap cocktail rings (they seemed amazing and so expensive to me at the time) but they were huge amethyst or citrine cocktail rings, so the could not have been that expensive, but I would sneak into her jewelry box all of the time as a 6 or 7 year old and try them on, totally in awe! This would be my first cocktail ring that is mostly gemstones vs diamonds.

Thank you so much for your opinion! I would say I was 70% yes for the ring and 90% yes for the bracelet initially, but now I am feeling more like 80% overall. I would say that I tend to rotate my jewelry and wear the same "set" for a few weeks to a few months at a time, and then switch it up, on an ongoing basis.

I have wanted a bracelet like this, but my main concern is if it is too close in style to the brand name version, because I do not want to wear something that is borderline "dupe", but if it is just a generic style, then I think I would wear it a good deal. One one hand, the hinge is not very luxe looking, but on the positive side, I really like that the hinge and the clasp are way different than the brand name version, because I want it to be clear that it is not trying to be a copy.

Here is the brand name bracelet I referenced.

Thank you for weighing in on the tourmaline vs morganite question. I don't really know anything about either one, other than that tourmaline is more costly, I believe. Now that I have looked more online, I think it may have been available to order in both gem options?

Thank you! I was really drawn to this style and it had been in out of my cart for awhile before I finally pulled the trigger to see it in person.

I think subconsciously once I looked up the ring online and saw so many similar ones, it lost a little of the specialness for me. I was trying to place the look, and I realized that Ivy and Rose online sells similar setting styles which are also available for mix and match combos. One time I had asked my local jeweler about making a custom ring based on an antique design I had photos of; he pulled out a huge book that was basically a book full of standard antique style settings that could be ordered and he would put in a center stone etc. I was very turned off by the idea! He was so kind to offer, because it would have reduced the price by a lot, but I wanted something more unique.

I actually had a diamond that I bought an Ivy and Rose setting for awhile back, and it was very affordable and quite pretty, but it just seemed so mass-market to me. In the end, I sent it to a small jeweler who specializes in restoring true antiques and he made me an amazing new ring (though it took over a year, the guy was really nice and skilled).

So, to lead into your next question, my two other rings are actually David Klass creations. The one on my right hand is my wedding ring diamond, on its 3rd setting now, the diamond was crazily expensive by current standards (back before labs crashed the market), like more expensive than my car. I would never get rid of the diamond for sentimental value, but I got bored of the setting. I sent David some photos and ideas for this diamond (on the subject of TRR rescues, the two carree diamonds on the sides are from a TRR rescue brooch - a stick pin with 4 carree diamonds). Actually, the other two carree diamonds are now in the remake of the Ivy and Rose ring that I remade that I mentioned above! So my collection is a TRR rescue by bits and pieces! Anyway, I don't know that I would design a ring half from scratch again because it was very time consuming and complicated, tiny details to pull my hair over that I had never considered. I based the ring on an emerald center from Cassidy Vintage that I had saved years ago and made a few changes combined with other rings I had saved and using my center diamond. The ring on my left hand is my second ring that made with David Klass using a diamond I had and 100% the design of a real antique ring that was "the one that got away", I had purchased it about 7 years ago, but the center stone had a big black inclusion that I could not get over. I asked if I could just buy the setting, and they said no, so I had to send it back. I had about 10 photos and videos of the original antique ring on my finger that I sent to David, and on the first try he made it 100% perfectly, it was so easy and I am so pleased with it. It looks way better in person, but here is the post on his page.

Thank you Sharon!!! I love this community so much. The ring is winning big time and it was such a GREAT deal too!!!

Beverly K is way higher quality than Ivy and Rose, with better crasrmanship. They are a much higher end brand. Ivy and Rose makes inexpensive settings. I wouldn’t compare the two in terms of specialness.

Your DK rings are gorgeous.

Thank you, this is great to know. The quality does seem really high.

One thing that I have realized with the custom DK rings and with this Beverley K ring (vs true antique rings) is that a little wider/rounder band is so much more comfortable! The bands on my true antique rings are so thin that they dig into my skin a bit.

To me the ring doesn't look mass-market at all, for whatever that's worth. I think it's beautiful and it looks very well-made. I saw it on TRR too and thought it was beautiful and a good buy. But you have to feel good about it!

Thank you! Your opinion is worth a lot! I was realizing that all of my other rings are either 1) Antique 2) Custom made or 3) Designer, so this is new territory for me. Maybe that is why I was unsure. This may open a whole new world for me!

I would call Beverly K a designer. Not as high priced as Tiffany etc but in the mid range. Try searching here in PS if you are curious. Many people own creations from them.

Do you know how I can tell the difference between morganite and tourmaline?

Thanks for your opinion!

Well morganite and pink tourmaline both have a range of colors, so it could be either. Now that you have purchased it, maybe you can take it to a local jeweler to see if they can tell you definitively which one it is. It is pretty either way, so if its tourmaline, you just got an even better deal!

That is a great idea! I think I am about to go down a rabbit hole of info and photos which sounds like a lovely way to spend a Saturday evening :kiss2:

That's a great idea. I can have my local jeweler take a look at it. I read a bit about the stones online, and I think it is tourmaline, since it is a brighter pink very similar to the pink sapphires, with just a touch of peach in warm lighting. It will be fun to find out for sure either way. I guess I am being introduced to colored gems (other than the big 3) late in life!

Thank you for the opinions to everyone! I will keep the ring and think about the bracelet for another day. Here is a bonus photo with another TRR rescue find; a vintage diamond line bracelet thanks to the helpful heads up from @Mreader ! IMG_8931.jpeg
