The TRR Rescue Thread: Show your treasures!

@lala646 I’m going to return the brooch. I took it to the jeweler and he thinks the 2.5 ctw is probably accurate. Based on the measurements it came in at 2.3 but he said the formula is for modern rounds and usually the old cuts weigh a bit more.

I don’t love the largest stone and 1 is a bit smaller than the others. I started having thoughts like… I’ll make that one into a pendant and I’ll buy another one for the ring. I bought the brooch thinking it would be an ‘easy 5 stone project’. turns out it’s not, at least for me now that I’ve gotten picky. Hah. So back it goes.

Here are some closer photos of the stones in case you want to buy ….IMG_5350.jpegIMG_5351.jpegIMG_5349.jpegIMG_5348.jpegIMG_5345.jpegIMG_5344.jpeg

I should add, I think 4 of 5 stones are gorgeous and the tiny ones are beautiful as well. I think you can see the cut of the largest stone is a little chaotic. High crown, pavilion a bit shallow, large table.

I can see what you mean. These are very old diamonds and so I am usually forgiving of wonk but you have to decide in person what you can tolerate. They seem to span the OMC/OEC transition which is why they are such a mix of styles, being that they are likely almost 150 years old. I had thought maybe the stones could be arranged so the smaller ones were on the end, which I think would make it less obvious that one stone was smaller. But if there isn’t a second slightly smaller than obviously that’s a no go. Still, it’s amazing what the right setting can obscure. My suite are not identical. The largest measurement on one stone is 5.24 the smallest measurement on another is 4.75. When loose you could definitely see those differences. But arranged right and with a setting like I used with lots of prongs, some semi bezel, those differences are not apparent. They really do look identical when set. So if one did want to make a five stone of this suite I think it could work. But I totally get if it’s not for you!!

The smallest one was gorgeous and I would have put it on the end no issue. it was the larger one that didn’t sparkle in the same way, had a bit of a milky appearance. It would have been the middle stone and bothered me till the end of time.

So I considered using it for a pendant and buying another small one to match. Tho I agree it wouldn’t have been 100 percent necessary.

Yes a hazy dead stone is a deal killer.

You are the best!! Thank you! As I've been thinking more about the idea of "missing out" on this one, I've been trying instead to focus on the stones I already have that need to be set (which are many). I will likely pass on this for now, but see if fate intervenes later.

Ok, not huge ticket items, I admit, but they fit beautifully in my casual bracelet stack: the two diamond “tennis” bracelets and the bead bracelet on the right.

GROWTH!! Lol

I wanted that bead bracelet! Lol. I have so much comfort when something I wanted goes to a Ps’r. I’m instantly not sour anymore. But that one would have looked nice in my stack too ;)

I took a chance on it and was very pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it! I share your sentiment regarding missing out on something and feeling better when I see it went to someone here (or relieved that someone saved my wallet from an overwhelming desire for an expensive item) :lol-2:

I had also been loosely watching this but no where near needing a project so will also try to practice this growth @Dreamer_D speaks of!

An unusual choice, but I wanted the vintage Cartier Green Chalcedony and diamond earrings on the site…only to realize that it was only one side, so I was happy to see this similar pair. They are larger and more dramatic, but that is ok with me.

That looks very pretty inked. Do you mind sharing the price?

One of my favorite and best TRR deals. It was a final sale at 60 percent off but I liked the facet pattern so I took a chance. Just over 1/2 carat OEC in 14k setting. It was so grossly dirty I was initially mad at myself for buying final sale. But cleaned up she’s a beautiful performer. And soooo white.

I just returned it, I’m not sure how long it will take them to relist it on the sight

I was holding out on you. When I bought the above, I also bought this little lady. Listed as 2- 1/2 carat OEC’s and a .68 ct emerald.
IMG_5713.jpeg

I didn’t take any photos first. Totally unlike me. I knew I loved the diamonds so I took it straight to the jeweler and very impulsively decided to take out the emerald and pop in the other 1/2 carat OEC. I had high hopes. Unfortunately, it looks a bit like a hitler mustache on my finger. Not the look I’m going for. But in the name of jewelry science I’m glad I did it. I was toying with the idea of a 4 stone but feel like I need the finger coverage of a 5 stone. Also for jewelry science the side baskets are unplated white gold, a 1st for me, and I’m loving it.

Since Whilimena will be here soon and I have earrings in the works, the mini mustache will be hanging out with me for the summer. Thankfully the stones are beautiful. The middle one looks a bit darker and smaller due to the gold basket and longer prongs. It’s actually very slightly larger and whiter than the other 2. It weighed .54 carats when the jeweler removed it from the other setting.

Introducing….. the stash!! lol. Comprised of 2 TRR finds. Hopefully to become a beautiful 5 stone next fall/winter/spring.

So fun! Of course I fully support this project. And it is a lovely temporary home. Three of my five lived in a pinky ring for a year!

Ooh wow! I’m honored to be following in your footsteps! I have plans to read thru your thread again. I feel like it should be renamed -The 5 stone manual lol.

This is so beautiful! I love to see how you repurposed the stones!

Thanks! There are threads for it if you check my threads. It was 3 years between buying the diamonds and making the ring, lol. I am not fast.
