Our backyard is getting close to full bloom. Birds of paradise are cycling and should bloom again soon. We need to remulch.

I'm going to plant the window boxes with herbs and some flowers. I'd like to add some rose bushes along the fence line as well.

The green and white colors here are popping. Gorgeous everywhere you look.
And the ultra bluetiful sky.

Had a dead tree cut down today and now there's a perfect spot for a statue. I've had my eye on this one for 3 years and finally bought her. I'm going to build a small stone bench for her.

Surprise volunteers in the garden...opium poppies. A first for me and I’m having fun reading up on them.
I assumed they were some kind of daisy-like weed, but serendipitously I was not proactive with my weeding and was rewarded for my sloth.

Not sure how unusual it is to have two shades on one bush but that was the reason I bought this one originally.

I was able to get a delivery of summer bedding plants during the lockdown, so I planted up all my pots, and they’re coming along really well.

When my best friend bought this house in South Pasadena, all it had was a big hedge out the front. That, and a random collection of invasive weeds. What he *wanted* was a taste of the wildflower gardens of Provence! (Not too much to ask, right?!) Over time, I've had it all removed and made him a wildflower garden. It's taken a lot of trial and error, but we're almost there now. Down at street level, I'm going to plant thick, flowering ground cover, so it gives the illusion of the plants cascading down the embankment and 'pooling' at street level.

It's the loveliest front yard in the street, and the roses are gorgeous, and flower heavily in spring and fall. You see people stopping and taking photos every day, and not toooo many roses get stolen! There is one elderly gentleman who walks past every day, stops, and smells the roses. It's lovely to see!

I'm hoping to get the street-level ground covers in this summer, so after that, it should be looking really lush. Just goes to show what can be done with perseverance and no front yard at all, to speak of!

It looks like the rootstock has thrown up a shoot. Most roses are grafted onto a hardier rootstock to help them survive.

@House Cat, okay help me out because I know so little, is that a good thing that the rootstock has done that?

I have this one plant but my neighbor has three knockout rose plants in his front years, they don't smell like anything but my one plant is very fragrant.

Suckers ( what they’re called) take energy from the roots and plant. It is recommended that you prune it off. Google will tell you how to get it all....however, if you are happy with your plant and like the way it looks, I say keep it. Gardening should always be about what makes you happy.

crappy photo
it was raining
native evergreen clematis
i thought we had lost it back in the autumn, it had been so dry and i just never thought to water it, all its leaves fell off, but a few months of regular deep waterings and then winter rain revived it

Thank you. She is as lovely in person as the photo on the seller's website showed. I'm so happy to have her and she is doing a fine job keeping watch over the garden.

Turkish carnations (I believe). I have these planted in wooden grape crates and they come back every year.
