I think I need to get a job in a jewelry store now, because I have learned enough in this journey to work behind the counter!

Oh, and the e-ring should be ready in a week or so and the Memoire will take about 3 weeks! So I have a little less than three weeks to buy a new digital camera!!

I''ll be seeing you on SMTR..finally!!!!!
Oh I''m so excited for you!!! Happy for you!!!! Yay!!! what kind of camera? LOL!

BTW I so totally know what you mean about getting a job in a jewelry store, I''ve thought of that too LOL I don''t think I''d need to own one if I could play with them all day! lol!!

Congratulations DS on making a gorgeous choice! Both those rings are going to look so sparkly, especially that you''re getting 10pts stones in your band. WoW!

Judy
:-)

Now you''ll have to start researching digicams!!

Thanks Sara and Judy!

I know I am getting a Canon, and everytime I try to research them I spend about 2 hours and still do not know which to get. I want a point-and-shoot camera mainly for taking holiday and vacation pictures, aside from my diamond photos.

Consumer Reports rates the Canon A620 highly, but it is a little larger than the A5xx series. And truthfully, I don''t "need" 7 or more megapixels to take regular 4x6 pictures. But the prices aren''t that far apart, so I feel like I should get the newer, high mp versions. Oh, and I want one that will take AA batteries, which is why I am not going with the ultra-compact SD models. So really, I obsess on everything I buy!!!!

Thank you, Sundial! It really helped knowing you liked your gorgeous HOF setting in WG!! And this jeweler is top notch..very opinionated, but a second generation jeweler and an appraiser and he knows his stuff. It is sort of a relief to me to establish a relationship with a fine jeweler in my area so that I can have minor things done now and then. Plus you need a good jeweler to buy other items like watches and other jewelry for daughters, etc.
DS there IS something to be said for having a relationship with a local jeweler that you trust. It is nice for repairs, cleanings, sizing, and just for trying on new things! By the way I LOVE my Canon SD550. I know it has the rechargeable battery, but it is so compact for traveling and it takes terrific pictures.

Sundial, I''ve wavered back and forth about the ultra-compact versus the compact! Obviously the smaller ones would be terrific for travel since they can fit in your purse. And there are great deals on the newer 600 and 630 models all the time. But I am worried about when I am in the middle of taking pictures at some event and then my battery dies. But I guess it''s like a cell phone in that you just have to be sure it''s fully charged prior to the event you''re using it? My husband sort of wants one of the digital SLR''s and perhaps if he is getting that, maybe I should get the ultracompact?

I am with you. When I bought DH a digicam I went with AA on purpose. A lot easier than waiting for the camera to charge. Plus I am not sure of your DH will use it or the size of his hands but sometimes the really compact ones are hard for guys to use.

I bought an extra battery and always have it charged and with the camera as backup.

Thanks SpideyWeb! I spent some time on that site today! Now after I leave teaching, I can either work at a jewelry or camera store! (Just kidding..the jewelry store would win hands down!)

Tacori, I am getting DH a camera for Christmas/anniversary, and you are right that he wouldn''t use an ultra-compact. He thinks he wants an SLR, so the Canon Digital Rebel XT is in the running, but I think the Canon PowerShot S3 IS would really be all he needs. And I do know that he prefers the AA''s, too.

Sundial, that is the obvious solution to have an extra lithium-ion battery. I probably am going to have to throw the model numbers in a hat and draw one out!

Dear diamondseeker2006,

I'm just wondering if you are aware of the announcement of the latest canon DIGIC III processor in the latest 3 cameras which canon announced just a couple of days ago? I'm not sure how this might affect your buying decision but I'm obviously not happy since I just bought Canon PowerShot SD630 with DIGIC II processor one day before the annoucement

Aaron

Can''t you return it?

In my part of the world Asia, they do not allow returns. They might replace with the same model if it is faulty, if not take it up to the manufacturer.

Aaron, no, I had not heard this. Thank you for letting me know! I''m afraid camera technology changes so fast that anything we buy will be outdated in a year! But I''ll certainly look into the DIGIC III and the PS G7. Thanks again!

Dear Diamondseeker2006,

Canon usually comes up with new models twice a year, usually March and September with features improvements, increase in megapixels and etc. What I did not expect is the introduction of DIGIC III processor (the brain like Intel processor in computers). I believe DIGIC II was introduced at least 2 years ago.

The camera will start shipping in October and I believe the camera websites will post a comprehensive review soon after.

Hi!

So glad you made a choice on your setting. It must be a BIG relief. I think what you''re getting will show off the diamond really well. And of course that''s the whole point.

THANK you for sharing your search with us. THANK you for telling us what your jewler said about WG vs PLAT. I may choose WG and feel better about it now!

Can''t wait to see your photos in SMTR!

Thanks again, Aaron! I read up on the new models and they look promising! I wish all the models were being updated soon with the Digic III, but since they''re not, it is going to make the decision a little harder. I need something soon, but I certainly would rather have the upgraded technology.

Thanks, Stone Hunter! It certainly is a big relief! I am glad you found the wg/plat information useful. I certainly am happy to FINALLY really understand it myself. That had been a real dilemma for me as I really liked the idea of platinum, yet it didn''t seem right to pay so much for something that would not wear well. So once I understood that you need a particular kind of platinum, then I realized I may as well use wg if I can''t access the good platinum in the rings I was buying. Good luck to you, too!

I am very happy to report that this thread is nearing it''s end!

I went back to the jeweler today.

So I decided on a plain 4 prong solitaire, but it is very nice quality...die-struck, which is stronger than cast (and I think stronger than handmade as well). I can''t explain how the head sits on the band, but it will allow the diamond band to sit flush. And I am getting a low, more spready head instead of the high one he had in the store. I picked out a 7 stone Memoire band, .75 ctw, so a little over 10 points each, G VVS-VS.

We went through the metal issues again, and he explained the issues with platinum to me better today. He said that most platinum today is 95% plat and 5% iridium or ruthenium, and it is just too soft. It scratches and dings too easily. ... Tiffany ring made in about 1915 ...The platinum looked wonderful. Why? Because Tiffany (and other jewelers) used 90% platinum and 10% iridium (or other alloy?) in the old days, and that holds up much better. Unfortunately the solitaire ring and Memoire bands are made with the 95% platinum, so I decided to go with the 18K instead.

DS, I haven''t been checking much lately, so I just had a few minutes to look up what you ever decided. Congratulations on your decision!! It sounds like you will have a beautiful set!! Also, I appreciate your comments about platinum and WG above. I find that information helpful. (since I haven''t finished my set yet!

LOL! I know that feeling. Sometimes I have thought the same thing myself, although I don''t know a fraction of what you other PSers know, since I already had my diamond when I came here.

Looking forward to your pics in SMTR!

Thanks, OFG! I hope you''ll have your new setting soon, too! I need to call that jeweler tomorrow. It has been 3 weeks!
