I mostly love a good red blend like a cab, merlot, syrah or a good stick to the sides of the glass cab. I have a group of about 10 friends that piles into my Dad's motorhome and goes wine tasting for a weekend in April annually. Not only are Washington wines awesome IMHO but they are very reasonably priced. Some of my favorites are in the $6-$10 range. Let me know if you ever want a recommendation!

Where in WA are you? I went to college in Walla Walla, so smack dab in the middle of Washington wine country! I'm originally from Santa Barbara, so good CA wine country (not so much cab or merlot but great pinot, syrah, grenache, etc.) and we live in Portland now, so again, wine country! We're big fans. With the heat we've been drinking a lot of sauvignon blanc & sparkling wine (there's some great ones at TJ's for really inexpensive). Savginon blanc & chardonnay are probably my favorite whites (although I do enjoy a good pinot grigio as well). Not so into sweet wines (reisling, gewurtztraminer, etc.) but I'll drink a dry viogner. I do enjoy port/ice wine on occasion as a dessert in and of itself. As for red wine, we drink mostly pinot, but I like a lot of varietals. We have a few bottles of really good syrah down in the cellar that we've been saving for a special occasion. I like WA cabs a lot and they tend to be less than the Napa ones, which is nice because it can be hard to find a decent Napa cab under $20.

Do you ever drink cabernet franc? Definitely a bit less common, but they can be SO good. And I'd love to hear some recommendations for WA wines--I haven't been tasting up there since college, although we've been talking about doing a wine tasting trip.

I live North of Seattle. I love Portland. We did a trip to Willamette Valley I think 3 years ago and I got a little tired of Pinot Noir and thought they were a little spendy but I did fall in love with a little winery in Portland called Hip Chicks. Heard of it? If you''ve never been you should go check it out! I''m currently in love with Snoqualmie wines and there are a few that you can only get at the winery. I''m pretty sure you could order them on-line though. If you love a good summer dock wine (that''s what I call the sweeter wines that you sip on the dock in the summer) you''ll love the chenin blanc and the muscat canelli (kind of rose). For reds my two stand-bys that I always have on hand is Hedges CMS (cab, merlot, syrah) and Columbia Crests Two Vines Cab (only like $6). If I''m splurging I''m drinking Exclamation Point Red (cab franc, merlot) from Windy Point which is a pretty small winery that doesn''t distribute a ton but you can order on-line http://www.windypointvineyards.com/our_wines.html Yes I''ve had cab fran

Seriously I feel so spoiled with all the wine trips I''ve done around here. The red varietals are endless in WA it seems like. Every year there is something new. I just went to Lake Chelan which is the newest AVA in WA and they have some fantastic wineries popping up all over there! In fact I was taking notes on some possible winery wedding locations...shhhh!

sunnyd - Where are you? I used to live on the Eastside...

Freke - Ooooh I love me some vegas! Sounds fabulous and what a great date, that''s Elvis''s Birthday!

Winelover, I''m in Issaquah. How funny! There used to be no PSers around here, now there are several! I smell a GTG...

sunnyd - Ooooh heck ya! I love the PNW! Are you originally from WA?

LOL--we were just in Lake Chelan a few weeks ago! I saw the wineries, but we didn''t get a chance to visit any because we were spending so much time on the water. We did try a local sauvignon blanc though--it was pretty decent.

I hear you on getting tired of pinot noir down here--there are a few really good ones and a lot of REALLY mediocre ones. I also miss some of the big fruit pinots from Santa Barbara. Foley and Flying Goat are two from down there that are excellent. Another good one is Alma Rosa and I''ve seen that for sale in stores up here. As far as local pinot goes, Willakenzie has a GREAT mid priced one (around $20) and they also make a really tasty pinot blanc. We were also really impressed with a winery called White Rose. Small production and a little spendy, but really good.

SunnyD--I think maybe we''ll have to do a PNW wine tasting GTG! Nom nom nom. I think I could convince K to head up to Seattle for that.

It's good to hear that you're still alive, Jcar! You are missed!

ETA: Speaking of missed.. where the crap is Bia? I miss her too.

I consider myself from WA; my family moved here when I was 9. Before that we lived in Toronto and Montreal. Where are you located?

LP, yes!! I''m always down for some good wine. I so wish Chateau Ste. Michelle did weddings, we would have loved to get married there.
7.gif

I''m in Arlington. I''ve slowly moved further and further north on the I-5 corridor over the years. Now I live in farm country with a view of the Cascades and LOVE it! Are you a shopper? I''m a shopper extroidinaire so if you''re ever up for a morning of Starbucks and Alderwood mall lemme know!

ladyp- I''m going to google your recommendations ASAP! Last night we had some crazy loon something or other from CA. It was a blend. Not bad but not my favorite. I hosted dinner for BF''s Mom''s B-Day. I''m exhausted!

Work Vent: So I''m not sure what everyone else''s work is like but I share an office with our two HR generalists. Dude, 3 chicks in an office...bound to go bad! When one leaves the other one complains about the other one and vice versa! Seriously is this high school? Anywhooo so one just got married last weekend (we attended) and she literally planned her whole wedding from work which REALLY got the other one complaining about her. So this week she''s back (leaves for her honeymoon tomorrow) and she''s been filling out her thank you cards ALL freaking week. OK it''s annoying but I don''t even work in their department and I''m really good at tuning it out (have toddler) so I could care less. Well as you can guess everytime she''s out of the office for a second the other one is just going off about her. It''s soooooooo annoying! I finally put my ipod on and cranked it.

Jessie (and any other Vegas peeps)

Any GREAT suggestions for dessert around the Mirage/Venetian/Palazzo/Treasure Island area?

We were originally going to do David Burke, but found out they were super expensive for what we wanted, and now we''re looking into other places.

This is for the after-wedding-dinner-before-the-show and I''m looking for awesome/spectacular desserts that will knock my former-pastry-chef socks off. THANKS!!!!

why oh why does caramel coffee have to taste sooooooooo good.

and i <3 wine. though i do love the sweets and desserts, i''m also a dry white kind of gal. i love those chardonnays!
reislings are yummy too, but my favorite is gluhwine (sp?) IN has so surprisingly good wineries, and a lot of them make german wines, and most make fruit wines (apple wine and cherry and raspberry and blackberry and plum and blueberry...
18.gif
)

TX along 290 has a lot of good wineries too, though there you have to pay for tastings, and around here there''s just one or two that you have to pay for, and you get a lot of wine, and the glass for under $10 bucks (i think 8-10 tastings)

the one i went to in IN that i had to pay for has a dessert apricot that has some of their brandy in it. yum.

gah. so. hyper.

and instead of the 599 dealie (which sadly is impractical no matter how i wish it to be, if St. L or louisville had jet blue it''d be another story) i may possibly try to go on my first ever cruise on fall break.

i will bring along a cd with wipe out and rock you like a hurricane just in case. and wizard of oz.

Ummm... I know probably no one is around tonight... but I just wanted to say that a few weeks back I interviewed for an internship I really, really wanted, and I think I only posted about it here in LIW small talk. And you ladies were kind enough to give me some much-coveted PS dust. And I got the internship, which makes me tremendously happy, and also another believer in the power of the dust.

So, thank you so much for your dust and your kind thoughts and your small talk all through this summer!
