Hey everyone,

Yes, I''m going to let the insurance company know today, figure out how much of a hassle their going to give me. I had the stone insured for EXACTLY what he paid for it. I didn''t see the point (at that time

) of insuring it for a bit more. At this point, I''m reluctant to divulge names because I''m not yet totally convinced it''s been stolen (I KNOW people are shaking there head at my LaLa land mentality) and of course because I''m not even sure if I''m allowed to, if there''s some sort of open case with the police...and the whole innocent until proven guilty. I mean what if he got hit by a truck and his body is unclaimed? Or his mother died suddenly and he''s in Switzerland...who knows what can happen.

Oh yes, and just a reminder for everyone to get insurance on their bling. You always think you''re throwing your money away.....but when something like this happens...GRR!

Honestly though, in way, we''re very fortunate that we can afford to replace ring. My boy has put it behind him. He''s been looking at the stones on WF. Contemplating a new stone, he says that he would like to pick one, and maybe it would later come to mean as much as the other one. Personally I told him to slow down, something about looking for a new one kind of says "The other one is not coming back" Maybe I''m the one that''s overly sentimental at this point. But at least he''s not mad at me anymore, so that''s a relief. Things are looking up....now if only the insurance comapny will be cooperative

Does anyone know if the jewelery is still in the man''s shop? Just because he''s missing doesn''t necessarily mean the jewelery is not there. Course I guess you can''t just break in to find out but maybe the police can get some kind of warrant or whatever to check the premises. It would seem to me that before the insurance company pays out they would want to make sure that the ring is not recoverable.

I am truly sorry that this happened. I understand your frustration over the insurance but we ALL make decisions that aren''t in our best interests from time to time. The diamond and the ring can be replaced - these stories often have happy endings. Best of luck to you and your boyfriend - I still have my fingers crossed for you. While I know the wheels turn slowly sometimes, I would call the police very often. Sometimes the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Otherwise, this could just be one of those cases that don''t command alot of time or attention.

Good luck and please keep us posted - we are all thinking of you!

Oh Ally I hope you get some good news soon, (((hugs))).

that''s a great question MGR? Ally, can you call the detective on your case and ask him? You could even say you are getting ready to inform your insurance company and just want to be sure the rings is missing.

Ally! Noooo!

I keep checking back waiting for you to say - the guy contacted me and I''ve got my ring back.

I''m sorry about all this - it''s got to weight on your mind pretty heavily. HUGS!

My thoughts are with you - hoping this situation has a positive outcome!

I HAVE NEWS!!!! The man came into the police station! Ok, so far this is the story. I''m a bit confused, so maybe you all can help me. The bare bones is the man has a gambling problem, and has just lost everything...he''s been at the Casino de Montreal, for the last few days, and the police had spoken to his wife, so when he finally came home, he came into the police station. Basic crazy gambling binge. Ok I have to admit, I feel a bit bad for him, but I''m freakin'' MAD.

Now I''m a bit confused, because I don''t know what happened to my ring. The police man said he sold it "a gage" which at this point, I have no clue what that means. I''m french but more english, and this doesn''t ring a bell. He told me that all of the property hadn''t been sold, but in a way it had...what does that mean????? and they would do everything to recover it. I asked him what were the chances, and he said "fair" and he said that the property (my ring included) was used in a way as collateral. If any one has insight, please let me know. I can''t reach my boyfriend, or I''m sure he would understand.

Am I getting excited for nothing? Fair is good news right?

Oh Ally, I really hope you can get it back, at least you have some info now. As to that guy I have no words.....

With luck, they might be able to locate your ring and get it back - fingers firmly crossed for you!

Fingers crossed for you!!! Sounds hopeful. When will they tell you more?

You have got to be kidding me. That jerk used YOUR ring for collateral!?! WTF!?! So does that mean the casino has it or some loan shark!? This sounds like a bad movie! I hope the cops can recover it for you... this is riduculous. I have my fingers AND toes crossed for you. You poor thing!

I'm losing my mind. I really am. I just went from elated to totally depressed. The whole thing is cryptic and I'm analyzing back and forth. If he'd just sold it, then I'm sure it would still be in the jewellery store right? I mean it's only been about a week so what are the chances of it being gone? But then why did the policeman say "Fair" why would didn't he say good? And why is it taking so long now? They must know where it is, so can't they just drive there and get it???
ok sorry, sorry, I'm a little frantic right now. If I could get my boyfriend on the phone he would calm me down
15.gif
Collateral...yes but not at the casino. I know that for sure, the casino of Montreal is run by the Quebec governement. There's no way they would deal in this stuff. At least I doubt it. I don't know does collateral mean for a loan? Oh my God, thinking out loud, maybe "a gage" means a loan shark? ....No that would be really, really bad....aren't loan sharks illigal??

Ok no. screw this. I'm calling the police back. I'm going to get an ulcer.

Keep in mind, wherever it is, it is STOLEN property. It cannot be legally sold or used as "collateral" and whoever DOES have it, is not LEGALLY able to keep it under any circumstances (at least in US law)

If they find it, they should be able to seize it ... regardless of whether the JACK*SS owes anyone any $$.

One thing though - it''s possible your ring might be "evidence" and would have to be held for a while in police custody. Don''t know how Canadian law works but I believe that''s how it''s done here.

Pawnshop. Thank you english speaking freakin'' cop. Didn''t there were pawn shops in Montreal. Wonderful. Welcome to the dark side of life. I know nothing about this, so all I want to know now is am I getting my ring back?? The man I talked to had no involvement in the case, just translated for me. So is this good or bad news? And if he already lost the money, doesn''t that mean I have to pay to get my ring back?

NO NO a thousand times NO. The cops can SEIZE it ... it is STOLEN PROPERTY. Unless Canadian law is really messed up. If he tell them where he "pawned it" and the pawn guy still has it. Hopefully they''ll get a warrent and search the place - seize stuff & sort it out later. Did you give them pictures of your ring?

Decoded: I love you. I feel like I don''t tell you enough
35.gif
. Thank you for all the info. I''m literally losing my mind trying to figure out all this stuff out. I just googled pawn shop but I''m not getting the gist of it. So what is this? They give you a loan and charge you intrest? When can they sell the stuff?

I have no idea what Canadian law is like, but Deco is right, it''s probably still at the pawn shop and the cops can seize it. You should not have to pay anything to get your ring back, but it may take a while to actually get it back since it''s evidence. The cop probably told you "fair" because there is a chance the pawn shop sold it or got rid of it if they knew it was stolen. Try and stay as positive as you can and hope that it''s still at the shop - I bet it is!!!

Ah, pawn shop. That's what I was going to say. It's a place where you can take goods that you have and "sell" them to the shop so you can get quick money. They then display the goods and others can come in and buy them. That means your ring could still be in the shop if nobody has bought it and as deco said, since it's stolen the police can seize it. At least that's been my understanding but I'm sure someone else can explain it better.

Hang in there, ally. Something good will come out of this. Sending good thoughts your way.

Have you filed charges against that "man" to have him arrested for theft?

I think the way pawn shops work is anyone can walk in off the street and sell to the pawn shop if the shop thinks they can sell it. They usually pay below "market value" to whoever is selling since it''s usually out of desperation. I don''t know what their turn-around is like, but just like anyone can go in and sell, anyone can go in and buy.
Something really high-end like your ring would probably sit for a while since it will be pricey, at least that''s what I''m hoping.
If I were you, I would use the yellow pages (I''m sure there''s got to be something like that in Canada) and find every pawn shop in the area and hunt your ring down yourself. You probably want your fiance with you as they can be in seedy areas and may have interesting clients that would be very curious about your ring.

How they often work here is that you have a certain time period to redeem your pawned goods before they are sold - hopefully this could work in your favour Ally.

I hope the guy spills the beans and tells where he pawned it so the police can seize it! it''s YOURS, there''s no way you would have to pay another penny to get it back! I hope it turns out ok!

Ok, you've all brought up some really good (calming points) it's pricey so it wouldn't move that fast, and there may be a sort of grace period. The police already know where he sold the goods. He didn't hold anything back, and has never done anything of the sort, blah blah blah...like I give a give a poop right now. Sorry if I'm being mean, but I don't care. I expect I should have some news very soon if it's gone or not. They bascially just have to go see right? I have to admit I'm blown away by how fast this has all gone, I expected it to be A LOT longer, but they've been right on it. I suspect the reason is one of the other pieces that is missing is "significant" I translated that to mean really expensive....like the true PS person that I am, I did think to myself "ohhh I wonder how big that other rock is"!

ally- even though this is stressful, it''s definitely good news! at least now there is SOME idea about what happened to your ring. I am keeping my fingers crossed for you.

I don''t blame you one bit for not caring - he''s a jerk who betrayed your trust and stole from you! I''m glad the police are moving quickly and whatever motivation they need to do so is fine. You crack me up wondering about the other piece!!
Deep breaths sweetie, I''m sure your ring will be home safe and sound in no time. Good luck!

Ally - this stinks. Keep us updated.
Hopefully, the police will find it and it will all be okay.
Do whatever you can to punish this guy - criminally and civilly.
I think you should find a good lawyer - and sue the appraiser and jeweler civilly.

My FI says to ask St. Anthony for help; he's the patron saint of lost things.

Scintillating...

*** OH - I'd be mad as hell! Stop feeling guilty for being angry!

Hopefully by the time the police and the courts have finished with this jerk the only rocks he will be seeing will be from looking out of his cell window.

Would the police tell you where he pawned it so that you could go there yourself and get it back?

I doubt there''s much I can do but pray to get it back. In Canada, Quebec especially, no one sues for anything. It''s just not that kind of society. Imagine, that a PRE NUP has no legal standing in the province of Quebec. None. ZIP. I mean even when people were transfused (accidentally) by tainted blood, they couldn''t sue. These people got AIDS and HEP B and the best they could hope for was a decent compensation package from the governement.

If the police decide to press charges, then they can. If not then there''s nothing I can do. Yup, sometimes it sucks to live in Quebec.

Thanks for all your support. I''ll keep everyone updated!

Ally, I can understand how upset you are, but keep thinking positive!!!! Good things can happen!

Ally! (i''ve been following this, but now feel I might have a bit of help)

JUST so you know, I live in New-Brunswick.. so I would assume the ''ways'' are the same.

The way pawn shops work is you bring something in. They give you so many days to pay it back (its just a way of getting money quick) but they don''t give you the full value.
that being said, it should mean- the ring has to be held for a certain period of time (since the guy probably had all the intentions of getting them back- STILL NOT OKAY..just saying!)

SO, him wanting to "get the rings back" but just "needing a little bit of cash".. the rings should be unavailable to public!

HOPE you get them soon!

ps. if you say that Quebec it''ll depend if the police press charges or not.. WELL if they don''t wouldn''t that mean you get your ring quicker? (just looking for hope!) :)

GOODLUCK!!!!

Ally - NO SYMPATHY for this jerk!!!!! Pawning stolen goods? He should have his ''nads nailed to the wall. Press charges, whether they get your ring back or NOT.

I hope, since they know where he sold the items, that the chance is good you''ll get your ring back. I''m sending hugs your way!!
