In the process of upgrading my 1.74 carat round diamond. Debating between a 2.72 GIA or a 3.01 GIA carat round.

Ideal cut
F color
VS1 clarity
61.8% depth
58% table
Polish & symmetry excellent
girdle medium to slightly thick

You beat me to it!

Also, do you have ASET images for these stones? With the crown angles over 35, you need them.

I will say in general that it is almost always a better value to buy high in a carat range than going up just over the next carat mark. But it all depends on what your end goal is. I will tell you that a 2.7 is going to be huge compared to a 1.7!

Does it have to be round?

Would you consider a 3 ct oval? Price will be similar to a 2.7 round, but faces up bigger than a 3 ct round. Then you have the best of both worlds.

My preference has always been round (instead of oval), but I can see how the oval shape would give an illusion of being bigger. Unfortunately, my heart is set on round.

What vendor is selling the diamonds? Are you set on F color? I'd go to G color if going over 3 cts.

(great graphic, msop! I wouldn't pay $10k more, either.)

I don't think they will do ASETs. If you only want to shop at Blue Nile, then I'd narrow the parameters to 34-35.0 crown angle and 40.6-40.0 pavilion angle. You might look and see if other vendors have the same diamonds listed.

The 3 ct is a little less risky with the cut, but I would not pay $10 more for that small of a difference in diameter.

This isa Blue Nile upgrade, so my options are limited to BN. I am not set on F color. Will continue my search!

FWIW I did run the HCA tool on the two posted diamonds:

The 2.72ct F-VS1 scored 2.7 - Very Good - Worth buying if the price is right, with Very Good in each category (light return, fire, scintillation, and spread).

The 3.02ct F-VS2 scored 1.3 - Excellent within TIC range, scoring Excellent in 3 categories (light return, fire, scintillation), and Very Good in spread. It's "x" fell within the white outline for AGS OOO candidates.

While I don't think the 3.02ct would be worth an additional $10K in terms of the size differential, if you were to purchase the 2.72ct, I'd suggest taking it a professional independent appraiser who can examine it and get Aset and/or IdealScope images etc. so its performance can be thoroughly evaluated while still within BN's return period.

That said, with all the round brilliants available and continually being added to inventory, and your willingness to consider color grades other than F, I agree with your decision to continue your search.

Make sure it is eyeclean. Ask them to pull the stone and tell you if it is eyeclean and also to send you a picture. You need both.

Blue Nile said it's eye clean and sent me a very magnified picture. I'm slightly freaking out about the inclusions (which they said you can absolutely not see with a naked eye). The stone is almost $6k less than the 2.74 carat F that I posted above and $13k less than the original 3 carat I inquired about.

Scores great on the HCA - 1.7 Excellent (and falls smack on border of AGS OOO range).



The GCAL images also look solid.

As a BN Signature Round, it should be eye-clean, though always advisable to ask for gemologist opinion and for images.

I ran the AGA Cut Class Tool (http://www.pricescope.com/tools/AGA_NAJA_Cut_Class_Grader)on it, and it received a Total Score of 1A, with 1A in all categories excepting a 1B in crown angle.
