Hi

I am considering a square princess of hearts style radiant diamond for a right hand ring. My top priority for the diamond is the best possible fire, brilliance and sparkle that can be achieved in a fancy cut diamond. I'm hoping that this cut will tick all my boxes. I love the clipped corners of the princess of hearts diamond shape and am considering setting it with tapered baguettes or bullets on the side. Or maybe a split pave shank......

I would love to see photos of others diamonds/ rings to see how they look in real life!

I have one! it's a .76 H/VVS1. 18k rose gold shank, platinum basket. I wear it on my right hand and I love it! It's also the ring in my avatar.

That's beautiful! Beautiful contrast with the rose gold  In your photo the diamond looks truly amazing - I love the striking facet pattern! Would you mind me asking a couple of questions about how it performs in real life?

Do you notice much leakage under the table? How is the fire and white light return? Does your diamond give a really symmetrical light return when viewed perfectly face-on? Does it get overly dark because of so much contrast from the large "arrows"? Do you think there are any drawbacks with this cut?

Also, I love how your diamond looks in the bezel setting - it really emphasizes the outline shape of the diamond. Did you notice any drop in light performance before and after it went into the bezel?

OMG! Where on JA please? Do you have to search under rounds or princess?

They're usually listed under radiant.

They seem to be selling quite well as I can currently only find these two, used to be a lot more just a few months ago

They recently had 15 or so of these which I wish I'd gotten as side stones or 5/7 stone. Wonder where they came from:

There seem to be more options for H&A cushions (e.g. BGD, JA, rockher but haven't seen feedback on the latter) but you're obviously not getting the clipped corners then.

Not at all! I didn't scrutinize it as much as I did my “main” (ering) diamond. I didn't compare it to other POHs to make sure I got the absolute best one. Also, because of the size I don’t think I see as much of these details as I would in a larger size (I have over-40 eyes now). That said, I will do my best to answer your questions!

I haven’t noticed leakage under the table. I haven’t looked for it though, but it’s not something that has jumped out at me.

Symmetrical light return…. Yes? I don’t look at this ring/diamond close up or in a focused way, it’s more like an overall sweet effect of the ring with a brilliant or fire show in the middle. To that end, it puts out a very satisfying show. I have had more compliments on this diamond’s light show than my OEC which is excellent for its make - people notice it and comment on the sparkles it is putting out.

It doesn’t go dark. Or at least, not in a way that I have noticed or that bothers me. Maybe that has to do with size (diamond is smaller so dark areas are smaller, hence I don’t notice them?), or maybe cut. I don’t know.

Drawbacks, I’m not sure. I have been perfectly happy with it since I got it. That’s saying something because I am very, very particular. I don’t know that I would select it as my ‘main’/ering diamond (because my first love is chunky light return) but it has ticked all the boxes as my RHR. I feel naked without it.

I didn’t have it set in anything other than a bezel. That’s a tough question, one I have searched extensively for information on myself. I wasn’t disappointed when I got it back and it was set, i.e. there wasn’t a noticeable drop in performance. There was no question I wanted a bezel though. This particular ring was more about the whole so I wasn’t setting myself up to notice and perfect these aspects, this time around.

I hope that helps! I know it’s not as definitive as you were looking for. At the end of the day though, it’s a very pretty cut whose light performances give me hourly pleasure and whose shape I adore!

Wow! When I got mine, it was the only one on JA. It was a fluke that I even found it. When I went searching for others (anywhere, not just JA) just to compare, I couldn't find any. Glad there are more around!

Re-reading your original post, I think I should add that there were emerald and asscher cuts in the running. As much as I want a step cut, I still wanted a ton of fire and brilliance for this ring. The POH does give me that, I just haven't analyzed it for the nuances, which is what you are asking more about.

Thanks so much for such a comprehensive response! You have actually really reassured me and helped address my concerns :)

Its interesting you say that this is the diamond you get the most compliments on, and that you had other step cuts in the running. I have other diamonds and I have noticed that the more brilliant cut varieties always get more attention when I'm out and about than the ones with less scintillation (eg step cuts). I think I might be someone who prefers more scintillation too. I find that I don't tend to wear my EC (in my avatar) as much as my other rings with round brilliant or cushion diamonds, even though it has an amazing ASET and excellent light performance. Even though I love seeing the colour in the broader flashes it gives off, it often seems too "quiet" for me, although the brilliant melee in the setting do help. I did consider an AVC at one point, thinking that this might give me the best of all worlds. I was lucky enough to see an AVC and another modern branded antique style cushion in person side by side and I was actually really disappointed. They seemed somehow "flat" and lacking in the life that I associate with diamonds.

So it sounds like this POH I have found may well be a winner.

Thank you! We’ll they are gorgeous so not too surprising that they are getting snapped up!

I believe Good Old Gold sell them and can get them in for you to your requirements. They have a number of videos of them on you tube.

These can be cut on order, if the right size & grades are not available now (could be).
I am already sold on the one I found (photo at the top of this thread). I prefer a more brilliant look to the old style cuts.

To find them in search engines, e.g. JA it helps to filter with a table of 60% or lower as these generally have small tables and that way you eliminate the majority of ‘normal’ radiants.

To add options, there is a Singapore based cutter for octagon H&A who also showcases them on YouTube: https://www.jannpaul.com/module/mediaplaylist/list?media_c=17&media_id=1
But as there are local options you probably don’t need to look so far. You still might find pleasure looking at the bling on YouTube.

Well, on the back of your feedback about your diamond I ordered the one I had been considering and it arrived today.

I am completely blown away by the light performance! So much brilliance and fire, and a beautiful facet pattern which shows up like a multi-coloured 8 pointed star in the centre of the diamond.

Still in its box but already bursting with white and coloured light even under a layer of plastic:

You are so right about that. These diamonds really have no downsides to them at all do they? In spite of the deeper cut with smaller table they don't seem to sacrifice any face-up size, in fact mine faces up larger than other square cuts like asschers or princesses for the carat weight. I started out looking for maximum brilliance and fire, minimal light leakage and an attractive and distinctive facet pattern, and this stone ticks every box. :appl: It honestly looks beautiful in every lighting condition. That combination is so hard to find in a fancy cut diamond, especially one that isn't going to face up smaller than other similar square shaped stones. I know this because I have inspected a fair few over the last 2 years and found something disappointing in every one of them.

Thanks again for your encouragement on this purchase. Your feedback was so useful and your photos of your beautiful ring really showed just how amazing these diamonds are! :D:dance:

Your pictures are amazing!!! Wow, the fire in that thing. I love it!!!

Please tell us more about it! Tell us its stats... and maybe show us a video... and maybe tell us how you're going to set it... and show us more photos...!!!:kiss2:

When I first became interested in diamonds I visually much preferred a squared off outer shape, but frequently hated the way the faceting made any fancy shaped diamond look.

I ended up buying a particular branded diamond that I had seen a smaller version of, and that smaller version had been absolutely stunning, squared off, but much more like a round brilliant in its behaviour (although not hearts and arrows). I promptly bought a larger one but I didn't understand just how important proportions and cut were (well I did, but it just didn't occur to me that a specialist stone wouldn't be well cut) so it was a disaster. I hated the thing.

Your stone on the other hand looks like the best of all worlds, I really love it, and I love how large the arrows are. Well done, well found!!! :kiss2:

I think we need to start a fan club

I'm thinking a 3 stone ring with some kind of baguette/ tapered baguettes or bullets or a split shank ring. But I'm going to try it out in a few stock settings first to see what looks right before making any final decisions.

Thanks for the compliments on my stone. :) What a shame you were disappointed with your diamond. Do you still have it? Have you any photos?
