What a fabulous thread! I so enjoyed looking at everyone's beautiful watches. I've decided to buy myself an heirloom-quality watch for my 40th birthday that I can eventually pass down to my daughter. I have three years to save up. :) I'm taking my time deciding which watch to choose. Although I do not own a luxury watch yet, I figured I'd add eye candy to the thread, if that's okay. Here are the watches I've tried on so far.

The front-runner is a Rolex Datejust 31mm SS fluted bezel jubilee bracelet with roman numerals and MOP face. Of course, the most expensive. Maybe a 28mm would be better.

I also tried these two Rolex, but I definitely want a MOP face.

I'm also drawn to Omega. Here's the Speedmaster Aqua Terra 34mm with (Gray and white) MOP face and diamond dial. The face is lovely, but too big and a bit chunky for my taste.

I randomly found the perfect Aqua Terra as an estate piece, 31mm in rose gold with diamond bezel and MOP face, but I'm sure it will be sold by the time I'm ready.

The Omega DeVille with MOP face. Lovely but not a top choice.

I plan to try on the Cartier Ballon Bleu and Tank when I visit NYC soon. I'm open to any suggestions.

Hopefully, I can post my own watch here in a few years. :)

I vote for Cartier tank. There is nothing more timeless.

@Arym thanks, a panthère could be on my wish list because it's the perfect 'everything' watch. Groceries and galas and everything in between.

Back in 2002 I was actually going to spring for a modern looking longine (as my first watch was a vintage longine from my grandmother when I turned 13 and I already had brand loyalty towards it), but the texture of the Breguet strap swayed me; the double grooved textile like links soften the heft of the strap. My friends think it's a bit old lady but as time marches relentlessly on I'm growing into it! A friend knows I have a Yellow gold watch, so gifted me a Tory Burch T Watch in yellow gold tone with a navy strap this weekend, and I like the color combo a lot. But now feel having 2 gold and navy watches would be silly. So the Breguet will remain untouched. For now.
Here's the Tory Burch gift, chunky casual but still super yellow:doh:: 15359047479021413486781.jpg

The Omega DeVille with MOP face. Lovely but not a top choice.

I just got a De Ville and I love it! Personally I’ve always loved Omegas aesthetic over Rolex. There’s something elegant and almost architectural to some of the designs that invokes in me thoughts of clean crisp posh hotel linens in a Parisian boutique. I usually gravitate towards MoP faces for the subtle glimmer but I just totally fell for the silk face in this model. The subtly of it just stunned me.

B00BDF69-7437-4A02-8FDD-0077B4942890.jpeg I just got an Omega De Ville Co Axial Chronometer, prestige collection. I love the silk textured face and subtle diamonds.

Your new watch is chic and elegant! This makes me seriously reconsider saying the DeVille is not a top option.

I also got the DeVille cause I’m a bit of a watch nerd and it had one of the earliest (if not the first) co axial escapement mechanisms which I thought was pretty nifty. The movement is an omega 2500 which gets some flack for being a spiffed up ETA, but I don’t mind that it’s not a ground up in house movement. Having a reliable chronometer classified piece is good enough for me!

Also I would think it’s cheaper than the Rolex and Cartier options. But is a gorgeous dress watch. I know sports watch styles are all the rage but I love a beautiful dress watch with throw back details. This watch feels very Mad Men inspired.

Lovely! Thank you for the perspective shot and the information. Your descriptions of the watch are so well said (French linen sheets!). I am just now learning about automatic watches as part of this purchase process - research is half the fun for me. I think I have been influenced by the current watch trend in favor of sports watches, but my style is more classic and feminine, so a dress watch would work well on a daily basis.

Here's another photo of the DeVille I tried on. I love the mother of pearl, subtle diamonds, and rose gold together with the SS band. A plus is that the price is the lowest of the options I've been considering, meaning I could buy it sooner, if I want.

20190324_165318.jpg 20190324_173136.jpg 20181110_171008.jpg Here is my rose gold and SS Rolex Datejust 31 with silver diamond dial. It was a present from my husband and I love it so much. I love how the silver dial picks up different tones depending on the light. Sometimes it picks up colour from the rose gold bezel and looks a little pink, sometimes blue/grey.

Beautiful watch!. One of these days I'm gonna change my wife's 31mm 18K RG/SS to a diamond dial like yours.

Thank you =)2 The rose gold prongs against the silver dial really make the diamonds pop - it would be a lovely upgrade.

I am trying to sell this, people are crazy for it, but I don't want to just give it a way. My dad gave it to me, his father gave it to him. It's a 1940's Nivada Datemadic Swiss made 21 rubis timepiece that is in great condition.

The amazing thing about it? The custom bracelet band that is pure 24k gold. Intricate and ornate designs on one side. This is not gold plated band, this is the real deal. And sometimes the second hand movement will start working on its own for about 2 mins, then stops. If anyone could tell me how much it's worth it, and how much I can expect to sell it for, that would be great! Since the 24k gold is so soft, I can remove it from the watch.... So I can can get an accurate weight of this exquisite band. Here are the picture. Thanks very much! 20190430_191310.jpg

This is a David Yurman Classic watch, 30mm, SS with mother of pearl diamond dial that I received for Mother's Day (very much appreciated, as I'm in the trenches with a two kids ages 1 and 3). Not a high luxury watch, but a lovely upgrade from my old Anne Klein watch. Earlier in this thread, I mentioned saving for a Rolex or Omega for my 40th birthday, but I've decided that this one is perfect for me, and I'll spend my birthday fund on something else, probably from Van Cleef. =)2

Cartier Tank Solo, Large size
Beautiful watches all, I have enjoyed looking at this thread multiple times! Gorgeous new additions as well.
I'm debating this watch - it looks lovely! Any chance you could post a perspective shot?

This just came!!!
I have always had my eye on a particular Cartier - Tank Louis Cartier. It’s classic, minimalist, yet luxurious.

They are really hard to come by. So when one came up on Chrono24 with all the trimming- mechanical, yellow gold, deployment clasp, box and papers I had to get it!

What’s even more surprising...
it was cheaper than the later quartz model!!
Guess mechanical watches are not one that is highly prized.

When I got it, the band was a little tight, and I had to consider getting another band
At a considerable cost of aud500! After some research I decided to take it to my trusted watch repairer/ service centre to see if they had something bigger..... when he looked at it, he said we wouldn’t be able to find one to fit... (inside I was a little devastated) but he also said the strap looked strange. The balance of the watch and strap isn’t right... let me do something for you.... as it turns out, the strap was fitted on the wrong way around... once corrected- the band fitted well!! 3BCF12F3-8EE1-471A-B89B-AA6F7185C4BE.jpeg D30ED717-0588-468C-9E7E-8DEA81EF43B0.jpeg 56E4D3C2-292F-4F28-8949-8C3445A8279D.jpeg B8AC9C56-301F-4221-A12F-677D64A59267.jpeg E0F3C8E7-54B2-4B11-93C0-4693C6E9F74C.jpeg
