Show me your brooches

I have so many brooches! I love antique jewelry, and for a long time they were the most affordable way to get examples of period styles, since they tend not to be popular nowadays. Then people started converting them into pendants, the prices of precious metals skyrocketed, and now they're not so affordable anymore.

Anyway, here's one that goes well with my platinum art deco rings. I sometimes wear it pinned to a ribbon on my wrist.

About the Thistle

The prickly purple thistle is the national emblem of Scotland. Ever present in fields and pastures throughout Scotland, thistle has been Scotland's emblem for centuries. The first use as a royal symbol was on silver coins issued by James III in 1470.

The Lovely Symbolism of the Thistle Flower

The thistle represents overcoming adversity and difficult situations. It’s a symbol of resilience. In Celtic regions, the thistle represents devotion, bravery, determination, and strength. In addition, the thistle is considered a symbol of protection.

It is also called the “flower of the sun“ and is used as protection against evildoers. The thistle is often seen on the front doors of Celtic homes. The flower’s pink and purple colors represent nobility and royalty.

i love this, next week im going to visit one of my workmates for coffee on our day off
we are going to look thought her mum's jewellery, im going to show her this :kiss2:

I hope I’m not breaking the rules for posting this as it’s not mine, but I think it’s the most fabulous brooch I’ve ever seen.

Currently listed with Sotheby’s… feast your eyes on the sheer scale of it, the workmanship, the colour, the fact that it’s detachable and can be worn in several different ways if you want to be lower-key. I am blown away.

If only I had a spare USD 25-35,000…! :geek2:

oh wow !
could Queen Mary of Denmark please send an aid to this auction
HM is young (ok my age) and she will buy her own jewellery (she brought her self a tiara) and she wears brooches
she is not afraid of big jewellery
and if Mary brought it we would get to see it being worn

I mean dont get me wrong i would love King Charles to buy it for Queen Camila but Cam has access to all the late Queen's brooches and seems to be having fun looking through rhe royal vault and offering us up some surprises along the way
, while in Denmark Queen Margrethe is sill wearing her brooches as HM abdicated rather than passed away

Wow :kiss2: it is sumptuous, @Pomelo.
I love multi-use pieces, too.
It also seems light enough not to drag down the garment.
I think that is so important for a brooch of this scale :mrgreen2:

This is a brooch my grandmother left me when she passed away. We were on different continents and I had not seen her in a couple of decades at that point.

My grandmother was an avid collector of jewels - and she had 4 daughters and 2 sons. I can only imagine all the gorgeous and unique jewels she must have had - and I wish someone took high quality photos of her entire collection. I remember as a child she would show me all the secret stashes her had in various drawers. lol

My mother gave me this brooch a few years ago - I am pretty sure the setting is silver and not gold. But there is no sign of tarnishing/oxidation. I remember her purchasing a couple of these when we visited Japan - to take home as gifts. I would have been around 6 years old (so yes, this brooch is over 40 years old). I don't have really good memories associated with this brooch because I think my parents fought over the purchasing of them. But my 6 year old self could have misunderstood everything.. I just vaguely remember looking at a couple of these brooches and feeling tense and my mother not being in a good mood. lol

sometimes older silver is better silver, i found a brooch of my grandma's that was 70 years old and no tarnish, i think it has more silver and less alloys,
its in a similar style to yours
maybe its not as old, looking at yours, as my grandma's sister visited Japan in the late 60's or 70's, grandma and her sisters wore brooches but due to ww2 i dont see grandad buying her a Japanese brooch

yours is a lovely brooch, who knows what was up with mum and dad at that moment in time, it could have been anything that was wrong on that particular day, holidays can be stressful, especially overseas and especially with children in tow
that brooch needs some new memories, if i lived closer we could take them out to lunch
