I suspect that the larger "houses" either comp pieces to royals (or celebrities) and or sell at a greatly reduced rate in exchange for the publicity they receive.

You can hardly see it in the pic, but Lady Davina (in burgundy, behind Lord Snowdon) wore a diamond necklace made of detachable section from a sautoir given to her grandmother Princess Alice by the City of London on her wedding to the Duke of Gloucester.

The currect Duchess has mostly worn the sautoir as a bracelet stack



Lady Davina also wore the choker at the Wessex wedding in 1999
