This is a very good thing and I hope that the GOP learns from it. Steve Bannon is effing up a lot of things for them. I might have to change to I like my DH. We both have been unhappy the last few years with how the parties have become. I wish our country could allow the rise of a true Independent party but the grip of power is too strong and the people are too complacent or too far right or left.

I would be up for voting for some kind of party that is fiscally conservative (can actually balance a budget) but funds reasonable safety nets (because having decent safety nets and stable healthcare, in addition to being the right thing to do, actually costs less than our current system and would be a boon to the economy), and keeps out of people's business regarding things like abortion. Basically, I'm a pragmatist. I am also a strong environmentalist who has been following science about anthropogenic climate change since the mid, late 80's. So any party I would vote for, would have strong measures to curb emissions of greenhouse gases. I don't see this as a fringe issue but rather that the US is behind the curve in not being a leader in this area. We need to move away from fossil fuels, even if that means building some nuclear plants till we transition to something more renewable. So, I am not optimistic there is a party that exactly fits me. I like a lot of things about the Democratic party, but like unions, a good idea is often taken over by cronyism, or people solidifying power than appropriately representing the citizens best interests. Honestly I could never be a politician.

OK, given that a party is supposed to have goals - a platform - what would an Independent Party look like?

It's one thing to say you (as in a person, not as in you Red) are independent, but if you don't have enough people who agree with you, you can't get things done in politics, or elections. Independence as it is used today, seems to mostly mean a person is proud of being selective, dare I say it, a unique snowflake. A cafeteria voter who wants a party tailored to their tastes. Which always reminds me of my personal favorite for stupidest slogan E.V.E.R: "An Army of One".

The reason Sanders didn't run as the candidate of the party that he actually always belonged to, is not that they aren't allowed, has nothing to do with shadowy power or complacency, it's just that our system has been overwhelmingly 2 party since the beginning. It's also that by many state rules there are not enough people in those parties to warrant the expense of putting them on a ballot underwritten by state monies. I do recall the hubs telling me that there was a time early on when parties actually printed their own ballots. And of course states still reserve the right to determine the rules governing who gets put on national ballots - states' rights at its very best, yes? So if by state rules you don't have enough supporters (or are too disorganized to make a deadline) to even field a candidate on a primary ballot, why on earth should you be on a national one? And then of course, there are the requirements of the actual electoral college, a complex topic unto itself.

And all that is to say that for most 3rd parties are too narrow (Democratic Socialists?) that there aren't enough people agreeing nationally, to get their candidate elected outside of a primary in a few states. Since elections (pretty much everywhere) have to be won by actual majorities, not, say, 28% as would be required to have 3rd parties be anything other than spoilers, our whole voting structures would have to be seriously restructured to allow coalitions of smaller parties to combine votes to get to a majority. Or everyone would have to get happy with a true minority in power, lording it over the majority. I'm thinking that's not going to fly here.

So by all means, start that party. But independent Red and independent Tekate or Callie, are NOT going to agree enough to be in the same party. Unless of course, the only thing you really want to agree upon is wanting to be spoilers for some larger party's primary, which means at primary time you will have Red trying to spoil it for the Democrats and Callie trying to spoil it for the Republicans - which means we're back to the same 2 party thing.

So, back to that platform....? What would your Independent Party stand for?

Poor Roy. He worked hard but the deck was stacked against him. Wouldn't that make him a "loser" in Trump's view?

When I read the first twitter by Trump, I'm like, am I losing my mind? This sounds coherent and I agree with him! Didn't last too long.

You are feeling plucky and well enough to engage me today LOL. I agree with most of what you said and I have posted my views plenty of times here. Which is what I am really saying when I say a third party, I really mean someone with the views of being fiscally conservative while more socially "liberal" because I do not give a hoot what other people do in their personal lives as long as it is within the law. People should mind their own business more and that goes for both parties. But that cannot happen because people and parties are too entrenched and must have the power to decide for others what is best for everyone. Not my cup of tea so I am stuck voting what is closest or not at all.

Edit - I agree on the Army of One thing. I hated it. Total idiocy.

For me neither party is fiscally responsible and government is not the answer for everything.

The deck was stacked against him in ALABAMA????? BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Trump is such a piece of shit.

You know, maybe they were. Because during this election, blacks were active. They did vote - and dragged their friends to vote against this racist, filthy, misogynous pig.

I posted it a few days ago to my FB. This was the GOP candidate Roy Moore a decade or so ago speaking about the evolution. It is unbelievable that anyone can be that stupid and uneducated. (It is not an attack on faith).

Cards should be stacked against some things, like a perfume that smells like fresh, hot, and steamy cat diarrhea. :knockout:

IOW by molesting children Roy Moore himself shuffled and stacked the deck of cards that were dealt yesterday.

Oh FFS. There aren’t enough eyeroll emojis on the planet.

Monnnie, you'll enjoy these I suspect. The fall under the heading of I need to read The Root more often. I was whooping with laughter and agreement. Thank you black people of Alabama. We owe you big.

Holy wow. He sure does have himself convinced that he’s fooling everyone, doesn’t he?

The child molester HAS fooled nearly half of Alabama voters.
Revolting!
But I guess once you've been convinced a virgin can have a baby ALL bets are off when it comes to critical thinking.

Of course, according to the reasoning displayed by some Einsteins here I'm the bigot for discriminating against this child molester. :nono:

... "My God, Kenny, he's a fellow Christian, and we get to do whatever we want, including infiltrating government to force our religion onto everyone.
It's for their own good, and we ARE a Christian country ... just read your US currency.
What you don't get, Kenny, is it's not us doing it.
It's God.
We're just serving the Lord."
:saint:

Okie Dokie, then. :knockout:

If you don't support that bigotry and programing then you are a bigot! :appl::clap::dance:

I was thinking of sending him that black cake from the other thread...

How do people that stupid even survive?

By eating food, drinking water, and getting work by appealing to other stupid people ... of which there are now plenty in America ... and they are breeding. :nono:

Has anyone seen the interview with Jake tapper & Ted Crockett? OMG hilarious.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/12/12/politics/tapper-moore-interview/index.html
If you don't want to watch all 10m, please just skip to about 8:45 and watch the 1:15. He is so so dumb.

I tried to watch it. But it wouldn't run except for the first two minutes or so before stopping for me. So I had absolutely no way of finding a certain time and watching for a certain number of minutes. I would have loved to have done that. I even considered going to YouTube and trying to find another recording of the show to see if another one would play better for me!

I don't know why I wanted to see this. People who speak for Roy Moore and Donald Trump always want to make me punch televisions and radios. (I tend to turn off Donald Trump himself on the radio lest I commit homicide and suicide while driving my large and lethal car.) That man really makes me angrier than anyone should be able to make me.

Nonetheless, I guess I wanted to watch stupid.

Hahaha! Have I mentioned I lurv you, Deb?

This guy is really really stoopid!
I'd not mention that (horribly rude and not PC) had he not been hired to represent a candidate for the US Senate.
Ain't they heard of vetting, or testing PR people? :nono:
Oh wait, I fergot, this is stoopid representing stoopid.

I can hardly believe it's not a spoof from SNL.

Seriously, find a way to see it.

The article does describe it, but there's a little bit of just dead air with the guys stupid face like "Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" that I find really hilarious. The written words dont QUITE capture it

TAPPER: Judge Moore has also said that he doesn't think a Muslim member of Congress should be allowed to be in Congress. Why? Under what provision of the Constitution?

CROCKETT: Because you have to swear on the Bible -- when you are before -- I had to do it. I'm an elected official, three terms, I had to swear on a Bible. You have to swear on a Bible to be an elected official in the United States of America. He alleges that a Muslim cannot do that, ethically, swearing on the Bible.

TAPPER: You don't actually have to swear on a Christian bible, you can swear on anything, really. I don't know if you knew that. You can swear on a Jewish Bible.

CROCKETT: Oh no. I swore on the Bible. I've done it three times.

TAPPER: I'm sure you have, I'm sure you've picked a Bible but the law is not that you have to swear on a Christian Bible. That is not the law. You don't know that? All right. Ted Crockett with the Moore --

CROCKETT: I don't know. I know that Donald Trump did it when he -- when we made him President.

TAPPER: Because he's Christian and he picked it. That's what he wanted to swear in on. Ted Crockett with the Moore campaign. Good luck tonight. Thank you so much for being here. My panel will react when we get back

kenny and telephone, I have to thank you for pushing me to go to YouTube because when I went there I found this:

It has not only the clip of which you made me (thank you so very much) aware, but much more of the wonderful evening show put on for the election by Roy Moore and his wife and friends. I had seen only the video clip in which Mrs. Moore had cooed that they were proud to announce that one of their attorneys was a Jew, but had missed the rest of the evening's highlights, and certainly all of Jimmy Kimmel's comments! This link provides all that was missing for me the first time around. (I laughed my derriere off.)
