Hi everyone,

I have found a setting for an engagement ring that is perfect at https://www.77diamonds.com/ Previously I had never heard of this company so I was wondering if any of you had? Is it credible?

It seems like my options are to (1) get the entire ring with the diamond from them online or (2) buy the setting from them, a loose diamond somewhere else and then find a local jeweler to put them together.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I am not familiar with that website so cant comment on reliability or not. Can you give us pictures or links to the engagement ring so we can see
if we can find it somewhere we are familiar with?

Not familiar with that vendor. They appear to be in Europe, so that may be why; doesn’t mean they are bed, just not as likely known to those of us in the U.S.

I think 77diamonds is quite well known in London - IIRC I looked at their site when I was looking for a ring.

In my experience it was cheaper to buy a diamond from one of the Pricescope-recommended vendors and pay the VAT on import - I think the same is still broadly true, even allowing for exchange rate fluctuation.

Agreed. I feel like there was a thread where someone was looking to buy on 77diamonds (from the UK), and it ended up that it was cheaper to buy from one of the recommended vendors here and import vs. trying to find an equivalent high quality stone on 77 diamonds. But I might be misremembering!

I am familiar with the family who owns the company ( not in the UK), as far as I am aware, yes very reputable people with deep roots in the industry. But don’t know the British side of the family personally and the ones who run it. I assume it’s a reflection of the ones I do (if it makes any sense).:lol-2:

I’m actually in the US but they were the only place I found the setting I like:

https://www.77diamonds.com/engagement-rings/solitaire?itemId=180&shape=1&metal=4

It is the “Delicacy” one in case it doesn’t direct there.

Are there any diamonds in their selection in the .75-.8 carat range that you would recommend?

Or any other websites with a similar setting and diamonds?

Thanks!
I like it!

A simple, classic setting will never go out of date IMO :))

It is worth noting that such a setting is not difficult to recreate, though - I had similar made for my good lady, which was a custom version from a vendor in Hatton garden for reasonable money :)

Any of the PS-recommended vendors should be able to source either that mount or a similar one, and perhaps get one that is even better if there are aspects you might like changed on it.

What is your budget for the stone?

They only have one AGS-graded stone in the inventory over 0.75ct, a 0.81ct F VS1 graded 'Excellent' for just under 3700GBP.

https://www.77diamonds.com/certification_RBMBVJFBWS38.html

Assuming $1.30/£1, that gives $4800, which I'll run with for now. I will also work on the basis that you are similar to most other UK buyers, in that colour above H is probably quite important to you (because that's what we generally see in the shops over here IME).

If you take off the 20% VAT you'd need to pay on import, that leaves pretty much bang-on $4k budget, which if stretched a little bit, would give you six options from CBI/HPD, for example, which are slightly smaller but the performance will be much better than you can find locally:

0.73 F VS1
https://www.hpdiamonds.com/en-us/diamonddetail/HPD9233

0.72 G VS2
https://www.hpdiamonds.com/en-us/diamonddetail/HPD10526

0.72 E VS1
https://www.hpdiamonds.com/en-us/diamonddetail/HPD10721

0.70 G VS1
https://www.hpdiamonds.com/en-us/diamonddetail/HPD8653

0.70 D VS2
https://www.hpdiamonds.com/en-us/diamonddetail/HPD9377

0.70 G VS2
https://www.hpdiamonds.com/en-us/diamonddetail/HPD10719

Of course, Durham Rose in Stratford is a CBI dealer and could get one or more of these in for you to consider, although there may be a small charge to cover their shipping costs - you would have to check. (There is also another CBI dealer in the London area, which can be found on the High Performance Diamonds website.)

Alternatively, Whiteflash has quite a few that may appeal - these would be my (clarity-obsessed ;-) ) potential selections:

0.813 G VS2
0.740 F VS2
0.717 E VVS2

Brian Gavin also has some interesting options:

0.862 H VS2
https://www.briangavindiamonds.com/.../0.862-h-vs2-round-diamond-ags-c-104106086073
55.9% table and 75% Lower Girdle Facets should give amazing coloured Fire! If you are interested in this, do call and reserve it ASAP because it seems a lot of stone for the price, IMHO.

That said... this 0.832 H VVS1 with 54.7% table and 75% LGFs will be a similar ball of Fire, totally eye-clean, and you can see the video already! This makes my clarity obsession tingle :D lol
https://www.briangavindiamonds.com/...0.832-h-vvs1-round-diamond-ags-c-104105165075

0.831 G VS2 has similar proportions and slightly higher colour for a similar price, and it's very clean under the table so should be eye-clean:
https://www.briangavindiamonds.com/.../0.831-g-vs2-round-diamond-ags-c-104105166046

0.790 G VS1 is in the 'Black' range, so has extra tweaks to give a slightly different performance (I'm still not sure of the exact differences but it will look amazing, I'm sure!)
https://www.briangavindiamonds.com/.../0.790-g-vs1-round-diamond-ags-c-104105165055

0.767 G VS1 is also in the 'Black' range:
https://www.briangavindiamonds.com/.../0.767-g-vs1-round-diamond-ags-c-104106086038

0.765 F VS1 if you want to go up in colour:
https://www.briangavindiamonds.com/.../0.765-f-vs1-round-diamond-ags-c-104104774002

0.758 E VS2 if you want definitely very little chance of seeing colour:
https://www.briangavindiamonds.com/.../0.758-e-vs2-round-diamond-ags-c-104104774015

0.733 D VVS2 is in the 'Blue' range - so completely colourless at D, completely eye-clean VVS clarity, small table and short LGFs again so lots of coloured Fire, and Medium Blue fluorescence that will likely have very little effect da-to-day but might give a subtle blue tint in very UV-rich environments, such as sunlight or under a 'blacklight' in a club :)

EDIT: I've just re-read that you're in the US, D'OH! In which case all of the stones above fall within the theoretical $4800 budget, so that was a fortunate mistake :D lol

Increasing the colour range to include I and J, which seems to be commonly accepted in the US (going from members on here) should increase size options.
