Recut or sell SI2 studs

I have a older pair of SI2 studs..H color and I think excellent cut..I have to check but I don’t have the appraisal with me..but I need opinions on whether I should sell them or have them recut. Can you recut SI2’s? I already have a nice pair of studs so I’m not worried about them losing weight after the cutting...I’m wondering if someone like Brian Gavin would even recut them. They are eye clean and do sparkle but they don’t sparkle like my well cut studs. I just feel selling them would be a pain..and I do wear them..I never sold anything before so I don’t even know what’s involved. I would appreciate any opinions. The total weight is just under 2 carats.

If you would like to wear them, I would suggest asking Brian Gavin about a recut. I don't know if SI2 stones could be recut, but I imagine it would depend on where/ what the inclusions are.

HI:

Would you repurpose the diamonds for something else other than earrings? Or do you want two pair of diamond studs?

Do you have a reliable Estate jeweller handy where you could get a ballpark for a cash payout?

cheers--Sharon

I really don’t want two pairs of studs. It seems silly but I feel like I’m cheating on them because my present studs are way better..so I throw them some love and wear them occasionally! I don’t know how I could repurpose them so it’s either I sell them or recut. I would like to sell them but I don’t know if they need to be certified to do that. I have a Gia appraisal report from an independent appraiser. Do you think someone like Grace from Jewels from Grace would sell them with the appraisal I have?
I don’t know of any estate jewelry buyers..

You're halir! We all move through stages of jewellery. Think of it this way, perhaps your (loved) earrings of yore will be new fav's for someone else.

I don't know about your appraisal. And I suspect if you consigned with a known vendor here, they'd want a current evaluation. Thing is, you won't know until you ask, them. (a vendor for recut, a vendor for resale)

cheers--Sharon

Thanks! Any suggested vendors I can ask?

I would ask Jewels By Grace or Love Affair Diamonds if they might be interested in buying or listing on consignment.

(Sorry I am not @canuk-gal. I feel like I am interrupting a lot lately.  )

Thank you! :kiss2:

Thanks! Those were great ideas @nala and @Queenie60. I think if I recut I would just wear them..I would just have to find out if Brian Gavin would recut them. Does anyone know who else would recut them if he says no? I’m also wondering if he recuts them would it bring the inclusions more to the surface and therefore not be eye clean anymore? I think I may sell them as is. They do sparkle and people have complimented me about them doing that so I’m sure there will be someone that would want to buy them. Maybe I can look at selling them to an estate jewelry buyer..I don’t even know how to do that so can start checking...

I think I’m going to find the right time and give them to my daughter-in-law..She has always admired them on me..she’s been through a rough time lately..

That would be a such lovely gesture!

If you do decide to recut them, BGD will probably be able to work around the inclusions. He has recut I1 stones in the past and recently recut @ILikeShiny pair of studs (SI1 & SI2) and they look phenomenal. Here is her thread on the recut: https://www.pricescope.com/communit...recut-by-brian-gavin-before-and-after.242389/
I have personally done 3 recuts with BGD and every time the results were amazing.

Thanks..I thought he wouldn’t do them..I saw the thread on ILikeShiny’s recut. They’re so beautiful..That’s what gave me the idea..but realize her color is so much better..I’m having a hard time letting mine go because I’ve had them so long and I love them..It doesn’t make any sense. I may even be upset to see them on my daughter-in-law’s ear and start pinning for them again..and of course I wouldn’t take them back..I’m so silly..

I inherited 1.5 TCW diamond studs from my MIL and had Brian recut them. They were ungraded prior to being recut and afterward came back as G S12. There were no issues with the recut and they came looking great. Highly recommend having Brian recut them.

I’ve seen some of your posts mentioning your daughter in law, you seem like such a sweet mother in law  She’s lucky to have you!

Can someone give me the range of how much it would cost to have them recut? Do they automatically get sent to be certified after the recut?

Thank you but she is the sweetest daughter-in-law....I’m so lucky..

Someone recently mentioned the new pricing, but I am not sure if the exact number. Appx $400 per carat and the certification is separate. AGS reports are $250 per diamond + shipping. You are probably looking at $1300-ish total.

Thank you! Pricey...but not as bad as I expected! Decisions!

You could recut them, maybe make some kind of a drop jacket to wear them with your other earrings for some time, and then after a few years, gift them to your DIL.

If you wish , you may not re-certify them if you don’t have any intentions to sell them down the road . Brian will give you all the aset images and so on to know that they have now the best possible cut . Sometimes clarity improves with recut ,sometimes not . Also , if the stones have shallow crown ,more like 60/60 diamonds, this type of stones are not the best for that process bcs they lose too much weight.

Thank you..I was thinking of having them recut and wearing them for a while and then giving them to her...
I’m a little worried that with the recut it would make the inclusions more eye visible and they’re eye clean now. I’ll have to think a bit..

I don’t think I would certify them..if I recut. I would probably just get an appraisal redone for insurance.

I would say that it would be quite the opposite. A better cut will result is better performing diamonds reflecting more sparkle and fire and therefore making inclusions much less visible.

That sounds good to me!
