He has not stated a timeframe for this. And if some cases pop up he’ll knock us down to a previous phase.

He seems a little over cautious, lol, but I think he's the only one.

Hi @arkieb1. I don’t know that we can ever even begin to emulate your country due to all the fundamental differences, sheer size being probably the most defining factor, followed by social inequality, and our capitalistic nature. Then when you throw in racism, you can clearly see how some ethnicities find it dangerous to wear a mask for fear they will be viewed as dangerous! There was an article about how social distancing was being enforced unfairly in Manhattan vs the Bronx (I believe) on the exact same day! Ugh.
I can’t speak for the rest of the country, but I’m satisfied with my governor and my state’s handling of this virus. And there are many other states that are doing well as well because I think geography plays a major role in containing this virus. I believe that your country is ideal even in that, right?
What is your country’s plan to handle the long term effects of this shut down? How will schools address the learning gap? Are you guys seeing a rise in suicide? Does your economy rely on tourism and will the lack of it devastate your economy? Do you guys have a healthier population in terms of obesity? Since obesity can lead to heart disease and diabetes, both of which increase the odds of comorbidity and death by Covid. Is that the result of a national nutritional campaign? Bc believe me, that is one aspect I think that as individuals we could all improve to better our odds! And finally, what kind of family structure do you guys have in terms of caring for the elderly?

I don’t mean to overwhelm you with all my questions . Lol. I was just musing but would love to hear your thoughts when you find the time.

Yes I think social inequity is part of the problem of the fabric of your society. We supported our poor and most vulnerable a lot better than you do before this happened so it's not surprising that we do so during it.

I'm not sure we historically are any less racist than the US, ie the decades long white Australia policy against Asians, and we have a horrific past of oppressing our Indigenous people.

Plans to handle long term effects of the shut down - there has already been a lot of financial assistance given to individuals and businesses. The banks have been forced to suspend ALL mortgage payments and small business loans for 6 months to anyone that asks and they contact everyone and ask them how they are doing (the banks rang my husband for example) and you get to elect how much you want to pay or you can defer all payment of anything without penalties.

Long term we will have a recession, just like everywhere else in the world and we will have to deal with that.

Schools are going to go back here in a few weeks time at the moment most learning is online but they are going to do different things in different states and see what works... like staggering attendance ie half the kids go on some days the other half stay at home and do the same lessons online to maintain social distancing. Some schools are sending all students back to class it varies depending upon each state.

Yes I would assume there has been a rise in suicide but there has also been more money devoted to things like help lines, and the mental health care sector to combat this.

Our economy relies more heavily on tourism particularly from places like China than the US does. Yes it has devastated that sector of the economy.

We are a Western society, just like the US there are fat unhealthy people everywhere.

We have a good system for caring for our aged ie if you stay at home and care for a sick, elderly or disabled person full time and you are poor you get a government funded allowance that recognises that is in lieu of full time work.

My 97 year old grandmother has just been put into a nursing home. My mother was her full time carer but she is still critically ill in hospital in Sydney, my father has early onset alzheimer's disease and because of the lockdowns I cannot move her or get to her.

My mother is my grandmothers only living child and I her grandchild so it's really hard because there is no one else to care for her. It's not a matter of any of us like dumping her into a home (she is in a very decent one) it's a matter of there were no other options.

He has not stated a timeframe for this. And if some cases pop up he’ll knock us down to a previous phase.

Our phase 5 also includes sporting events and concerts and I can understand the reason for that.

@1ofakind i looked up the plan, and it doesn’t look that bad? Your state recorded 2,000 new cases yesterday, and just your state has more cases than the entire country of Canada. Per the governor ‘businesses’ can open fully in a few weeks, and Restaurants/bars in June. Social distancing is likely part of the new norm for a while, so yeah having concerts with thousands of people is on hold for a bit.

@telephone89 ...IF all the guidelines are met things can reopen little by little. Nothing opens fully in the next phase. Because he’s put a hotspot in every region so even in completely unaffected areas they will not be able to move to the next phase. Again, our hotspot is 4 hours away...we are not a heavily hit area and several surrounding counties have 0 Or single digit case numbers and 0 deaths. We don‘t all live in Chicago. Most people here don’t even want to visit Chicago even when there isn’t a pandemic, lol.

People here aren’t talking about concerts with thousands of people......they’re talking about going to church again sometime this year, an open air concert in the park (with social distancing, masks etc) Or a county fair (again, with measures in place to protect ourselves and others). None of that happens until the seemingly impossible phase 5.

And they especially dislike feeling like they are being used for his political agenda when he doesn’t give a crap what happens in the rest of the state any other time.

@1ofakind that sounds more reasonable than concerts and stadiums filled for sure. But I get the issue - 4 hours isn’t really that far. So if one county opens and is right next to the hot bed still in lock down, a lot of irresponsible people will just travel from the hot spot to the reopened area, and cause new cases. I appreciate that he’s taking it slow for now. You can always speed up opening if things go well, you can’t go back and reclaim lives, and I think trying to start over (like closing down after being open for a few weeks) will be even worse for people.

4 hours is far here. Really far. This is a close knit community where people are born here, maybe go away to college and early career but then they come home. If you don’t have 3-4 generations of history here you are a newcomer. I guess people could come here from more affected areas but I’m not sure why they would....we don’t have any big attractions...we don’t even have a Target. :cry2:
I’m not from here so it’s an interesting perspective.

It’s hard to read a lot of the misinformed posts about how greedy, stupid and selfish Americans are and uncaring about their neighbors and community. That Is not the case in any of the 8 different places I’ve lived in the US and it certainly isn’t the case in this community. I wonder if some of the posters here only know what they see on TV or believe that all the news stories represent all of us....because they just sound ignorant when they say things like that.

Illinois.

Phase 5
What it means: With a vaccine or highly effective treatment widely available or the elimination of any new cases over a sustained period, the economy fully reopens with safety precautions continuing.
Phase 5 means till the cows come home!...nuts.gif

@arkieb1 like @nala I am satisfied with the way NY and NJ governors are handling things. Is it perfect? No. But we are huge states with dense population and we have major differences compared to let's say Australia. And I also want to emphasize people here share a help others mentality. One only has to look at the crises we have all endured to see people coming from all over (the USA) to help others.

Do I like our President? No. Do I respect our President? No. Did I vote for him? Hell no.
Do I love our country? Yes. Despite all our drawbacks I am still an American and I am not ashamed to be an American. Am I disappointed in the way we have handled things as a country? Yes.Can we do things better? Hell yes.

I agree wholeheartedly @JPie.

One big mistake as I see it is we (USA) failed to close our borders to Europe in Feb and March and while we closed our borders to China we neglected a very important source of the infection. People traveling from Europe to the East Coast (including NY) and infecting us. And the infection spread like wildfire.

Do I love my Australian friends, my New Zealand friends, my Canadian friends and my European friends? Hell yes. I have friends all over the world and there are pluses and minuses to each country. There is no perfect system and I am the first one to say hey we are doing things wrong but I will not bash Americans. They are some of the best people I am privileged to know.

I know some wonderful Americans too Missy, yourself included!!!! Yes your dense population hasn't helped things but there are Asian countries with dense populations doing far far better than the US so that isn't the only reason for a bad outcome during this health crisis.

I think there are lots of people in the US that have a help others mentality. I know that you, and many of the people here all do, but as a collective whole you cannot deny that culturally this notion of a certain set of "rights" and freedom of liberties underpins who you are. That same set of "rights' and freedom of liberties prevents things like better more uniform gun control laws despite the fact I've read most Americans would prefer them and in this case it is preventing in some areas of the US (not all), acting with better responses to the virus. Preservation of the Economy and being re-elected versus saving lives of the elderly, sick and disadvantaged.

US Constitutional and international law expert Kim Lane Scheppele puts it far better than me;

“What we're seeing is that the virus is infecting not only people and spreading but the virus has been infecting democracies that have weak or damaged constitutions. So if you have a system already in place that isn’t robust, that hasn’t been maintained, that has weaknesses or that has the possibility of political gaming, then the kind of extraordinary powers that somebody needs to control a pandemic are precisely the kind of powers that you see undisciplined presidents grabbing, or, weirdly, in some cases, undisciplined presidents simply letting go because they just don't seem to care about the health of the general public. The virus actually shows which constitutions are sick, and the question is, how it is that we fix those constitutions?

... And to maintain the metaphor, it seems to me that one of the things we start needing to talk about is what looks like a constitutional vaccine so that this doesn't happen the next time.”

Phase 5 means till the cows come home!...nuts.gif

yeah he was asked several times about a vaccine or eradication taking 18 months or more (if ever) and he’s fine with that timeline. He wants zero cases. But hey he’s a billionaire and his wife is still traveling around so I guess he’s not really affected by his own dictates. It’s not like he’s missing a paycheck....or a meal.

@arkieb1 I appreciate the research you put into your post and yes as a collective whole we do cherish our freedom and rights." "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" is well known in our Declaration of Independence.

Preservation of the Economy and being re-elected versus saving lives of the elderly, sick and disadvantaged.

Again not all (or most?) states are behaving like this. Just turn on the daily press conference for confirmation. The governors of many states are not putting economic health over public health.

If you judge us by who our President is then I can see where you would have an unfavorable view.
I agree our President is dysfunctional and IMO delusional and he clearly doesn't care a fig about most Americans. We are in dire straits right now in no small part due to him. That is a travesty.

I fervently hope we have a new and better administration come next year.

Yes I agree. To judge most people by what one thinks they know from what they read and see on the media will paint an inaccurate portrait of who we are as Americans. Most Americans I know are generous and kind and caring. And look out for one another. Just look at any crises and see how everyone rushes to help.

Wow this will kill any event venue in your state. Sports, concerts, plays, the list is endless.

Better to "kill" event venues than masses of people.

When the pandemic is past, either previous event venues will be "resurrected" or new ones will go into business.

Human beings can't be resurrected.

I really like the NSW Premier (different state to where I live), the first things she says every single day is "I want to thank all of the people in my State and in Australia for doing the right thing" our numbers are x......

Gladys is awesome!!! I think she's excellent at giving us just enough so we don't go stir mad while still trying to keep everyone safe.

She also delivers disappointing news very tactfully imo.

Funny story about me being an idiot. I voted for Gladys at the last election. I'm a huge fan of hers and her policies on education. But me being me I just grabbed the voting sheet and copied it so after a while I had no idea what party she was affiliated with. I had to look it up the other day!

I was like "If I'm fangirling over this lady I should probably know what party she's in."

"rocks, post: 4732779, member: 6453"

I’m still reasearching, but it makes no sense. We had excess capacity, yet cuomo sent the elderly back to facilities unable to care for them

read this: https://www.politico.com/states/new...response-to-covid-19-at-nursing-homes-1282821

Cuomo spokesman stated:

Cuomo spokesperson Rich Azzopardi called the Senate GOP's remarks “a sick and sad attempt to politicize this pandemic using a policy that is consistent with the current Republican federal administration.”

“This nursing home directive was based on CDC guidelines and is virtually identical to several other states,” he said in a statement. “And the clear policy is if a nursing home does not have the facilities, the staff nor the protective equipment to care for a resident, they must transfer them to a place that can — period.”

As for sensitivity to the gay and queer, who cares?

They care that's who.

The hospital is staffed with Christian doctors and nurses experienced in treating infectious diseases. But Samaritan Purse's policies require most contractors and some full-time volunteers to sign a statement of faith that includes a declaration that “we believe that marriage is exclusively the union of one genetic male and one genetic female.”

To those who feel oppressed and discriminated by this Evangelical organization going to the tents was anathema.

The Christians that work for samaritans purse do not require that those they care for subscribe to their beliefs, rather that those that work for the organization do. I’m ok with that.

According to the above, theydo ensure those who volunteer for them adhere to their belief of marriage is only between one man and one woman.

I live here. My father was on the board for a large local hospital group for 25 years. His best friend was chairman of the board. Friday night dinners included our respective families and a discussion of the hospital and how to proceed. Had the hospital not closed (it was the closest full service hospital to a major international airport. Uncompensated care bankrupted the hospital...the local, lower middle class population paid the price). we all would have taken positions on the board (do not make assumptions...we are all highly educated, and qualified....in fact, participation costs, both financially and personally.... there is no financial gain)....

Very nice anecdotal story. I'm highly educated, my husband is too, my SIL was head of pediatric cardiology at a huge, nationally ranked top tier college and medical school and SHE always volunteered one weekend a month to give FREE healthcare to the poor. So I don't know about uncompensated care in a large hospital in NYC, but I know Jesus wouldn't turn anyone away if they had a problem.

Cuomo made a huge mistake. It happens...don’t hide from your mistakes. Admit it, and move on.

As far as I can read Cuomo made ZERO mistakes. Compared to Trump and the republicans Cuomo is a hero, if only Texas had a governor like Cuomo, our infection may go down, so far no luck.

I'm trying to say "wtf" - why would anyone allow this person to continually dictate facts in a very self-righteous way? And she quoted that she met with her pool builder, what is so different than my "huge home" and why should you care that I have a meeting with the republican women's association? I continue to hear how right the democrats are.... I have a right to mention my party. That's what I am saying. She continually twits posts around to have things inline with her beliefs. Sorry but I don't roll over to anyone.

Did I mention your HUGE ihome? I don't remember that, point that out to me, I never EVER said I was not affluent, I've said since I've been a member of PS that I am VERY lucky in my life, that I grew up poor. How @Queenie60 does one TWIST a post, if YOU read my posts they are always retorts to what you say and why I think you are wrong in defending @Dancing Fire - I"ve said ALL ALONG that he should fight his own battles, he's not a little boy. He's affluent! most of us here are affluent, many are richer than me and less wealthy than me..

Rather than accuse me of 'TWISTING' just read the posts and answer and let DF be the big boy he really is, I can converse with him without a nanny nagger.

As to my pool builder, I'm excited but not sure if it will be him we shall see.

Oh...@Tekate. I see you as being self-righteous. I'm glad that you have all of the facts in order. Must take quite a bit of time to continually look these things up and quote them on PS so that you're the one with all of the correct information and quotes. Good for you. Well, yes, I will go girl! I have a huge home to care for, plants to tend to, food to cook, elderly parents to care for, a business to run and many other daily tasks that do not provide time for me to sit behind my virtual keyboard and dictate to others. I know many women like you - that huge backpack of animosity that you carry around must be quite heavy as well as the need to always be right. Yes, I do wave my white flag to you..... not worth the time it takes to converse with one who is self-righteous. Oh.... I forgot to mention, I have a zoom call to tend to - a discussion panel with The Silicon Valley Association of Republican Women. Busy me!!!

OMG you don't see the irony in this line"I see you as being self-righteous." my mom always said: People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

I am pretty sure I have my facts in order and I appreciate so much your understanding this.

You are so busy y'all need to hire someone to help you with your exuberant life!

OH AND BE SURE, I NEVER ROLLED OVER ONCE IN MY LIFE FOR ANYONE.

I know a lot of women like you Queenie thosewho are nanny naggers, holier than thou's, who JUDGE everyone and involve themselves needlessly in other's conversations and lives. Bravo !

BTW I never allow anyone to bully me or roll me over either.

Oh I'm not surprised you are zooming your way up the Silicon Valley holier than thou republican women! my mom also had another saying for you: "Shoe? Fit? wear it" you got it going Ms. pugnacious republican! you go girl. ta! ta!

:o There are Republicans in silicon valley? You should invite Tekate...:wink2:

Why? do you think I'd go? I don't live in Silicon Valley, been there, my husband had an office there but worked in Texas too.. I'm not a resident and can't vote, be sure - I'd never belong to any political group like the dem women or the republican women, those types of women are all fluff with nothing of interest in life.

@Tekate It was me who mentioned her HUGE house and republican meeting. My response was deleted, so apparently someone was extremely offended by pointing out these odd brags....

I live in another state and I know which party she represents  but I guess I follow politics. It probably helps that my parents live in rural NSW and my mother is a staunch conservative. My father used to be head of a union in a large rural centre, he's been a leftie all his life.

She seems lovely and genuine on the TV I haven't met her in real life, I've met our Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk (yes I had to check how to spell her surname) once and my husband has met her a few times, she isn't as politically fierce as a lot of her former labour counterparts but she seems to have a genuine compassion for the people here.

My husband knew Anna Bligh well and the Beatties before her. My husband used to have a job working for the QLD government.... We have both known a number of politicians from NSW, both state and federal ones.

@arkieb1 do you know anything about the Victorian Premier? We joke at home that he's going to lock up the Victorians forever!

I'm envious of you! You can drive around! I want to take my son to the sand dunes! There's no one there but unfortunately not legal to drive there right now!

A battle that I can never win...;( Going into a battle against @Tekate is like me playing one on one basketball against Michael Jordan. What are the odds of me beating MJ?. Come to think of it  I'd have a better chance of beating MJ in basketball than for me beat T in an argument ...

Me affluent??...speak for yourself!

What did I miss???...:(sad It ain't bragging if it is true.

DF, two posts up you wrote to Tekate, "Me affluent??...speak for yourself!"
Really?
Doesn't the A Lange Söhne watch in your avatar sell for gobs and gobs of money that only an affluent person would have?

I think this ad is for a used one ...

8.png

Then you've posted about your Patek Phillipe, which is also priced in the stratosphere.

Me? Sure, I bought those FCDs, but am not suggesting here that I'm not affluent.
To do so would be disingenuous.

IMO calling a spade a spade (honesty) builds respect.

Oh, and people telling the truth can absolutely be bragging.

We are now allowed to go up to 50kms from where we live, the state itself is still in lockdown. I've only been out a couple of times, once at the beginning when we thought my son had fractured his wrist I sat in a doctors surgery that was seeing COVID patients and then at the x-ray place, and then last week I went for a drive just to get out of the house. My husband is still working, he goes out almost every day so he gets the shopping and I've been at home, which I have found generally O.K, until the renovations next door started (see my other post)...

Our schools are home schooling still we had 2 x weeks before the holidays 2 weeks of holidays and now it's 6 weeks of online lessons then they are going to start some kids back again slowly here.

I personally don't know the Victorian Premier at all, I'll ask my husband if he does tomorrow (it's late in the am here), he knows far more political people than I do.

DF, two posts up you wrote to Tekate, "Me affluent??...speak for yourself!"
Really?
Kenny, Affluent has many different levels. My net worth is nowhere near most of the PSers here. I drive a 2005 car and I don't own any FCDs nor an Octavia...;(. Am I poor? No. Am I Affluent? No!.

It was just announced that Pence’s Press Secretary has the coronavirus. She is Stephen Miller’s wife.

I believe Pence is on his way to Iowa. Trump and Pence need to be in quarantine if they were near the two people who have the virus in the past two weeks. Maybe they should also reconsider their stance on masks.

Yes, the day when the sun rises from the west! ...
.

Where is Alj these days?. A debate b/t Alj and T will be like the first Ali and Frazier fight in 1971 between 2 undefeated heavyweight champions.

Ooops, I forgot, Alj did lose 1 debate on PS and every PSer was :o when she got down on her knees and surrendered. bowdown.gif Alj's PS debate record is 33 and1 .
