I would be really careful about buying a stone on ebay as a new stone buyer. Especially one with an 11 year old certification. Is it from a trusted vendor, and is there a return policy? If I were you, I would need a few things from the seller: an updated certification, and a picture of the stone inscription on the girdle. I would offer to pay for the re-certifiation (likely a few hundred), under the condition that it's the same stone with the same specs. But again, all of that should be done with a trusted vendor as opposed to in a private sale.Hi, I am new to diamond buying on eBay, I am interested in a stone that comes with a GIA cert. but it looks like it’s dated 2008, how would I know if it is actually for the stone advertised? Thanks!
Vendor has a 30 day return policy. Where would one go to get the gem verified? Thanks!
Thanks lovedogs, it is linked by a long time pser as a good buy so I am tempted. I don’t think the vendor is listed as a trusted vendor, that is why I am also nervous. The listing said the stone is likely cut 100 years ago, came with and appraisals and GIA cert. but the Cert is old...I would be really careful about buying a stone on ebay as a new stone buyer. It might be a good buy, but I still strongly encourage what I said. Ask for a pic of the Gia inscription. If there isn't one, insist on an updated gia report. Or do both (which is what I would do). Less important if the stone isn't too expensive, but better safe than sorry! Thanks lovedogs, it is linked by a long time pser as a good buy so I am tempted. It is 30 days return. I will likely have it reset by DK, I think I might have time to get him to appraise it...It might be a good buy, but I still strongly encourage what I said. What's the return policy? You could always buy it and get it appraised near you, but make 100% sure it's returnable.
https://www.gia.edu/report-check?reportno=17420024&s=1557673060482In 2008, I think there was only 1 type of report which would be an advantage as it would have a plot. I don’t know how many diamonds were getting laser inscribed at that time.
Would be great if we could see the report!
I do like the shape and color, I am curious to see a stone with a large cutlet. I have no idea about color diamonds, but I feel like it is the actual stone vetted than seemed like a good price.Since this just seems like a random person selling stuff, I would have an appraiser be 100% sure that it's the stone being advertised, etc.
Do you like the shape? Color? Price?
I think that's a good plan. Just make sure that if you like it,you visit a trusted appraiser (preferably from the list on PS), and that they are sure it's the same stone, no damage has happened between 2008 and now, etc. It's definitely pretty so I hope you love it in person and the appraiser finds zero issues.I do like the shape and color, I am curious to see a stone with a large cutlet. I looked they the vendors other listing it seems like a lot of estate semi precious gem, he’s descriptions seem detailed and careful. I was freaking out a bit because it is kind of an impulse buy. But now I am mostly excited and wanting to see it in person. This is My first online diamond buy... I feel ok due to the 30day return. I will look into independent appraiser if I like it in person.
Yes, I bought the ring, it is my size and I am intrigued by the shape and color, on a bit of impulse... I will probably reset the gem at some point if everything checks out. There are some types of reports that do not include a plot map. The report search did not provide a link to the actual report. You may want to ask the seller to show you the actual report, not just what is shown via the report # search. The listing has ended but maybe it is stil available.
Thank you so much, I am pretty thrilled with it, it just feels right on my hand. I can’t take any credit for finding it, I stumbled upon it reading PS! @Niel deserves full credit for the find, I just got lucky. That's so funny because when I went to the link for the listing it showed a completely different ring! This is really pretty! A Natural Fancy Yellow with even distribution, that's awesome! I think the large cutlet is actually pretty cool. Also, as for the optics, the shape of this stone is my preference for marquise cuts. The mounting is very cool for that stone. Clearly meant to go together. I have a friend who has a marquise (not a Fancy) that has a similar setting, so it is obviously very conducive for the marquise. And yours has the "prongs" built in to the mounting so it is one flowing piece, and even includes the corners to protect the points of the stone. What I am especially loving is the yellow gold with the yellow diamond! That is a total home run for me! It is a VERY cool ring, sophisticated, modern, stylish... enjoy your great find!
Thank you Demon, I like the culet too, I don’t always see it right a way, it’s kind of whimsical.I really like the diamond! And the large culet.
She needs a name @NielUgh she’s perfect I love her as I knew I would lol
Please don’t feel bad, it is sound advice!I really love this! After all my caution, I think you really lucked out with this one. Sorry for being so scared about it--I just didn't want you to somehow get a different stone. But as long as the appraisal checks out, this is a wonderful find.
I did just came back from the appraiser, and it appears to be the gem in the cert.I love your ring as is. It is a beautiful old cut fancy yellow stone. I DO want to warn you however, that the setting your diamond is in (a thick bezel) obscures much of the girdle.
It is an antique stone in a modern setting, for me that is a flag that the setting might be hiding a damaged stone. Might.
Unless the stone is taken out of the setting, which might be difficult to do without ruining the setting (I don’t know) you will never know if there are hidden flaws like chips, etc.
I once bought a second hand gorgeous old cut stone in a recently modified setting that had a substantial chip hidden under one of the prongs. The price was based on the original estimated value of the diamond, so I negotiated a discount, since once unset, I couldn’t return it.
Take potential hidden flaws into consideration when you consider the price.

She didn’t mention about the any potential chip under the setting. She did mention that some of the inclusions are covered by the setting and she won’t be able to verify those.
It’s current setting is really growing on me, I really don’t know if I want to take it out just to check...
I got to see the ring under a microscope which was pretty cool, and appraiser also thought she wouldn’t be surprised if it was rated fancy vivid yellow.
