I am torn between 4 potential settings! Which do you think will look classic, beautiful, and especially balanced with an .80 diamond.

#1WF Classic Tiffany Knife Edge

#2WF Contemporary Tiffany with modified round donut. I don't love the angular donut and would switch to round. Which costs more.

#3WF Legato Sleek Line

#4WF Custom. Classic Tiffany head with 2mm half round shank. Still waiting on quotes for this. I wasn't sure I loved the tapered shanks on the others. I also was unsure of the sharpness of the edge on the classic but also know that can "soften" it. She said all prongs can be requested more claw like if I want and that is a minor modification not considered extra.

#5 Better idea :D see below!

Re: Poll Which setting will look balanced/beautiful .80 diam

My stone is 0.70 and was originally set in a Tiffany-style 6-prong. I really felt that 6 prongs overwhelmed the diamond - I thought it looked as if the stone was sitting in a basket.

The Legato looks really really nice. Just one caveat though - four prongs can make a round stone look somewhat square-ish.

Re: Poll Which setting will look balanced/beautiful .80 diam

im just in love with the tiffany solitaire. I find the prongs more attractive, and more flattering for your color stone.

i know you arent going JA , but look at their yellow gold version of this in the 360 view, it has a 80 pointer F that i think looks amazing in that setting. Makes me want one ( shhh dont tell anyone)

and ive had had a 6mm stone in a 6 prong and i felt like the 6 prongs didnt seem too much

with that said, the lagato hs that metal bit at the bottom of the prong that would also help with the color, so any will be beautiful

Re: Poll Which setting will look balanced/beautiful .80 diam

Simply put, 6 prongs overwhelm a smaller stone.

Re: Poll Which setting will look balanced/beautiful .80 diam

I voted for the classic. A year ago this wouldn't have been my choice but after seeing several on here over the last six months I'm in love with it.

Re: Poll Which setting will look balanced/beautiful .80 diam

I dont think 6mm is too small for a 6 prong, ive had it and i do not think it was swallowed up.

I think the 6 prong actually makes the stone bigger

Re: Poll Which setting will look balanced/beautiful .80 diam

Obviously I am fond of the 6 prong knife edge and I love the Legato Sleekline for a 4 prong setting (and I do not think it makes a round stone look anything other than round since WF doesn't do bulky prongs).

Re: Poll Which setting will look balanced/beautiful .80 diam

First thank you to all the PSers for offering up feedback.

I did try on a Tiffany at Tiffany and it was a .61. I thought it looked rather nice. But my concern is that Tiffany said they adjust the band width to balance with stone size and so they are all a little different. So I can understand the couple of you who had the 6 prongs and felt it swallowed the diamond.

So my next questions/concerns go to the lovers of the classic knife edge.

Anyone else who has input..

I also felt that the tiffany had a softer edge on the shank? Obviously I can't see the WF in person but does the shank look like a harder sharper "edge" or is that just because they are all magnified pics? Do I ask them to soften the edge a bit or is that risking the entire balance of the look? They told me I could have claw prongs or regular if I wanted. What is pictured in your opinion? I don't think tiffanys prongs are "clawed" from what I remember although delicate claw or lightly pointed sounds great! What would you do. Sometimes when you mess with what they do well turns out to be a little crappy so I don't want that as a result of getting more picky. Even though it's a stock setting it's still $900 for 18k white gold. I want it to look amazing.

Cygnet I wish it were simpler to use any vendor for settings but I want my diamond and setting to be from the same vendor so that I can rest at ease and honor my budget. Which I have already had to expand a tiny bit.

Here is a pick of the .61 tiffany to see what I mean

Re: Poll Which setting will look balanced/beautiful .80 diam

.pic not pick.

Also wanted to add that I do like the legato but I am not sure how I feel about the taper. That pinched look might not be for me even though I think the rest of the ring and the head look beautiful. I especially don't like it in the hand shot photo which is the last pic on the site. I'm sure it wouldn't look as elegant though if I asked them to make the band one width? I feel like I might be asking for trouble with that one?

What kind of prongs do you have with your setting?

I have the Legato, but in the pave version. I really don't think WF's stock photos shows the tapering very well. It still looks balanced while also giving the center stone more of a 'pop' (for a lack of a better word). The prongs are very delicate. I have a smaller diamond than yours, and it doesn't look like anything but a round.

I posted some pictures on the SMTB section here:

If you want any more shots from different angles, just let me know.

Thank you hawk25. It's very beautiful with the pave. I am curious when you hold it up profile view can you see the diamond through the cut out towards the base or is it set higher then that where you can't see any of the diamond?

Re: Poll Which setting will look balanced/beautiful .80 diam

as long as the claw prongs dont add etra bulk, id go that way... also, i bet WF would send you pictures of the ring further way, sense youre concerned about the pics being too zoomed in.

Id bring up all these things with WF, about the tiffany repro... do they think it should be thinner for your diamond size, what do they think about softening it... they do this all the time, i think they could answer that .

Re: Poll Which setting will look balanced/beautiful .80 diam

Another vote for the classic six-prong knife edge!

You can see a little of the diamond, I tried to get the camera as level as I could

Re: Poll Which setting will look balanced/beautiful .80 diam

I voted for the classic 6-prong. I definitely think a 0.80 ct is plenty large enough for a 6-prong setting. My husband proposed to me with a 0.79 ct in a 4-prong setting and the head was too high and the stone looked square because of the prongs. I so wanted to switch the head to a 6-prong one with claw prongs and when DH ok'd it, I sent it to BGD to switch out. I was nervous that I was going to regret it but I am SOOOOO happy with my decision, my ring is perfect now and I think the stone looks larger even though it is set lower. I'll try to post some comparison pics later.

There are also "illusion" heads, a vintage style. People either love them or hate them. Some pics in this thread:

Or "fishtail" head like the Cross Victory ring uses. The shank can be any style, plain or fancy. Same for the illusion head.

I love the kind that have the wavy plate on the bottom and stone on top with delicate prongs. Could be the fishtail prongs. However, those settings never look great on me. Or I haven't tried one that looked quite right. Please excuse my description I know I am not using the proper terms. But I have seen someones beautiful wavy plate/base and thought it looked very pretty!!

YES PLEASE! I would love to see some photos. Comparison pics would be fantastic. If that is too much trouble I would still love to see hand shots to see proportions. Would also like to know what size you are. If it is easier to post links thats cool too :))

Re: Poll Which setting will look balanced/beautiful .80 diam

Another vote for the classic Tiffany 6 prong setting. I cannot tell you how much I dislike 4 prongs on round diamonds. It's just a personal thing, but I really don't like it at all. 6 prongs make the round stone look, well, round! :halo:
