I had my ears pierced within a month of my grandmother having hers done. I was 8, she was...65? Mom had done her own when she was in her twenties. My father was resistant, but I think my mother talked him into it. He was worried about earrings getting caught something, which is probably why I had only stud styles for years.
I had never considered piercing a baby's ears until was pregnanct with DD1, and so many women asked about it. Every one seemed to have a strong opinion one way or the other. I decided to wait until the child was old enough to ask and participate in the care. I have two girls and both had them done at five. Now 18 and 15, one wears earrings every day, the other rarely wears any kind of jewelry. (if that one didn't look like me, I'd wonder if she was mine!!!!)
