I have been working with DK to design a new setting for my 1ct OEC. I showed him a picture of a CVB ring that I love but unfortunately can't afford.

Here are my thoughts. I need to change the basket. I won't be able to clean the diamond properly the way it is. I like this more open basket but my diamond is a lot smaller than the one in the photo below:

Will I need to change the shank? I do like the CVB shank but I want to avoid copying too many elements of that ring.

These CAD images are just the beginning. I would love some help working out how to make the changes to avoid copyright but keep the vintage feel of the setting.

@Maisie have you actually talked to Caysie about the setting cost? Just asking ... if you haven’t, I would recommend that you do, and give her your budget and see what she can do.

If you’ve already done that, and it’s still a no-go, I would maybe suggest the following design changes to ensure it’s different enough to not be an exact copy, but still retain what (I think) are some of the things you like, but still different and perhaps more unique to you, your stone, and scaling it to your stone size (e.g., with the prongs/bezel suggestion).

Hope this is helpful. :wavey:

Did DK say he was opposed to copying it?

Thank you so much! I would love the diamond to be bezeled but it’s not perfectly round. I was told it can’t be set in a bezel.

The open basket sounds interesting. It reminds me of a James Meyer setting. I meant to tell DK that I would rather not have any diamonds on the shoulders.

I haven’t asked him to copy it because I wouldn’t feel right having a direct copy.

Did DK tell you that? I’ve seen him take an OEC with a wonky side and bezel it to make it more round.

I’m surprised a bezel isn’t doable just because it’s slightly out of round; I’d think that would be fine and help visually give it a more round look. But if not, perhaps just doing the little ‘dot-style’ prongs vs the claws would be a good idea. I love claws as much as the next person, but - especially with 8 - usually only on 7mm+, as they cover too much of the diamond, whereas the small dot-style would secure it while keeping as much face-up diamond visible as possible. Just a suggestion. :wavey:

Seems a rather classic design that is not uniquely Caysie?
- You could add diamonds on the cuffs
- 4 double prongs instead of 8 separated prongs
- change the basket as planned
What an exciting project for you. There is not much that David Klass cannot do, so it’s always wise to ask him just to be sure

Another thought - if you want some accent on the shoulders but not diamonds - might be to have him add a couple of small balls in an opposing metal color (e.g., white gold balls if the rest of the ring is RG or YG) in place of diamonds. Or perhaps have him do some sort of ‘cutout’ in the metal, kind of like this:

I didn’t realise this wasn’t an original design. Although I know that over time most rings have already been done and there is little chance of finding a style that is brand new. I definitely need to change the basket. I want to be able to keep the diamond nice and clean. I am super excited. It’s been a while since I’ve boufnt a new ring :sun:

That’s a good suggestion. I wasn’t in love with the claws on the inspiration ring. I will definitely mention it to David.

The ring will be all yellow gold. I’m going to look for examples of the little balls thing!

Opinions on here are going to differ on whether this is an original design.....

Wow I think @the_mother_thing has given some great tips. I really like the cut outs she pointed out in post #10. Even with a few diamonds, coupled with that cut out and I think it would look great. Also, I noticed it also had a decorative bezel with milgraining, which seemed to appropriately fit. I think all that would make the original CvB inspiration even better IMO.

I can't wait to see the finished product!

I definitely won’t copy her ring. I am taking inspiration from Caysie’s ring but want to make this setting my own :))

I like the cut outs. They do add a vintage vibe.

Wait. Are those Caysie's or DK's cads???

Top is pic of CvB inspiration piece.

Actual CAD's are DK's. Look at the basket detail. DK CAD is less intricate, plus having worked with DK I recognize their CAD's pretty easily, lol.

Hi, Maisie! I love Caysie's inspiration ring! I'd really suggest asking Caysie for a quote if you want something close to that ring. That is an original ring which had parts from other rings Caysie has designed. Yes, it is based on antique rings. But I'd find a true antique to have David copy or adapt or either have Caysie make that one with the minor changes you need. David kind of copies the designs of others often (as he must have done those cads knowing he was plagarizing her design), and I am glad you are conscious of not wanting to copy.

I’m really hoping to get help to change enough of the setting that it is inspired by rather than copied. I haven't David to do that. He sent that CAD so I can look at the aspects I would like changed. There was never an intention to make the ring. I hope that makes sense.

Do you have any recommendations where I can look for true antiques?

I look a lot, and I usually go to google and put in things In the search like “Edwardian ring” or “Art Deco ring” and click on images. That’s where I’ve gotten a lot of ideas in the past! It’s fun to look even when not planning a ring. I save pictures of designs I love for future reference!

Hi! It's my ring and I believe this is a Caysie design. The original was called Zoe that I saw from a PS member and I had her add in the Chloe "shoulders" and shank so a slight modification. Both ring designs were CvB designs.

A couple of things that the inspo pic was taken before the prongs got taken down. So you might want to consider that for yourself as well.

The bottom of the basket has a donut, but yes, it is hard to clean and hard to know that it's actually clean. I clean it through the holes in the basket with a brush and the donut on the bottom of the basket also allows some access. I would say that if you want to see more of the pavilion to allow easy access then definitely change the basket. I also played with a couple of basket designs before settling on the original. You could change the motif in the basket that would have naturally larger spacings, for instance. I do like your inspiration the only thing to keep in mind is if you're married to 8-prongs in the octagon then whatever comes under the prongs would flow more naturally into the design.

You could also change the style of the cuffs to a true split shank? Unless you like the cuffs but the cuffs and the prong do kind of go hand in hand. I think a 4-claw like your inspo might flow nicely with a true split shank design.

I do love the ring and I was not sure whether I would go to Klass or to CvB before ultimately deciding to go with CvB because I just couldn't change enough and could afford it. Nevertheless, I am excited to see what you come up with!

They're like baby claw prongs, sorry my stone was not 7mm and closer to 6.5mm, but I don't think they overwhelm my stone at all after they got shaved down. You're of course free to disagree, but I like them, all 8 of them.

Ok. But he did make a CAD that is an exact copy of her ring. Sorry, but after he copied her "Chloe" 100%, I have no doubts that he would make this EXACT ring for you if you wanted.

And for anyone who wants to pounce on me for being a fangirl, go ahead. MANY people on here remember that incident and he even took down the ring pic on IG because it was an exact copy. I'm shocked that he would go down that road again.

Actually, no I'm not- it's his business model. And I have to say I'm pretty disappointed that it's so casually accepted and encouraged here:(

Yes that may be but I don’t want him to copy it 100%. Why would I come and ask for help changing the design if my intention was to copy the ring as it is? That doesn’t make any sense. I could have just stayed off PS and purchased the ring. Nobody would have known.

Oh ok. Well in your first post, you wanted to switch from one of her designs to another of her designs (only in regards to the basket.) Do you have any other ideas or inspiration rings? Did you ask her for a quote on etsy?

Thank you so much for posting. I appreciate your suggestions. There is a lot to think about. I may ask the admins to delete this thread and start a new one without reference to CVB :))

I have spoken to Caysie.

I didn’t know the second photo was one of her designs. I just googled for side views.
