Overthinking a big purchase

Hi everybody,

I’m a huge overthinker. Especially when I’m spending over 15k on jewelery.
I’m thinking about pulling the trigger for a custom cut diamond (>25k) and I’m back and forth if this really is what I want “forever”. As I’m based in Europe just selling the item if I’m not happy isn’t feasible. I know a vendor with an upgrade policy is the best for people like me. Unfortunately I don’t care for MRB.

Have you overthought purchases before pulling the trigger? If you did overthink did you end up being not so satisfied?

What shape are you considering?

IMO its good to not rush into a major purchase. I like to think things over and "cool off" for a good long spell before pulling the trigger. If you aren't sure, how about just taking a break from thinking about it for a few weeks and see how you feel then when the stress clears?

When you say custom cut are you meaning that you want someone to facet a stone from rough for you? If this is yes, then why and why not just purchase a really well cut one that has proportions in line with what you're looking for? I know trudging through websites and visiting jewelry stores can be very stressful and time consuming, albeit fun to an extent.

i completely feel for you. custom projects are so so so stressful. i am very particular regarding cuts but i avoid custom cuts to keep calm and sane. i think it is healthy and helpful to back away to gather some perspective.

are you able to be slightly more specific so that we might offer you some informed opinions??

At the beginning of my diamond journey I actually really disliked big round diamonds (even on the prettiest hands). So at that time I was convinced I only wanted an elongated oval diamond. But with time I came to appreciate round diamonds performance and the big flashes of an oec.
So now for over a year I have been set on an old European cut in the 10-11mm range (I’ve worn round CZ rings extensively in that size to be sure). I do know that an elongated shape does look better on my hand. That’s what’s keeping me from being 100% sure on getting the oec. But do prefer the facets on an oec than on an elongated antique.

Where you 100% sure on your CBI Round diamond? Or did it take you time to be sure that you wanted an Round brilliant super ideal? (:

@LIGemzGal I actually can have the stone cut to very exact measurements of table size etc.. And I prefer an newly cut oec (as I can’t see any antique ones in real life). I have searched all big auctions in Europe for nice rounds though (:

I’m looking into a newly cut oec.
Have you ever overthought a purchase? Or have you gone 100% convinced into every Purchase?

how exciting! i love well cut oec's!! they are right up there in terms of favourite cuts, along with emerald and antique cushion/old mine!! i wear a pair of ideal cut oec studs

i tend to like to get the "lay of the land" so to speak. then i go by feelings rather than over analyze or over think. i feel somewhat anxious with every large jewelry purchase. it's the strangest thing because i don't feel that anxiety when i spend that same amount, quite often more, on a home project. no anxiousness whatsoever.

It sounds like you are not ready to pull the trigger.

I'm very careful spending 15K+ if I'm not 100% sure.

Newly ideal cut OEC's are a favourite cut of mine. With that said I would like to add that if you plan to go the custom cut route it can be a pretty stressful journey. Get as much as you can in writing (written contract) prior to sending any money etc. It will save you a lot of stress.

My two favorite threads! Poshmommy s stone is the one I fell in love with! The cut on hers is so beautiful (:

Wise of you to wear a CZ for awhile to get a feel for what a specific size! I do that too and think it really helps.

Sounds like you aren't quite ready yet to make that ultimate decision. But look at it this way, you've narrowed down the field a lot. You are now deciding between two. That's progress by most people's standards!

I was 99% sure when I ordered a custom cut CBI round. I've had three previous engagement rings, two were round (from failed relationships) and one was an oval (from my husband of 15 years.) I never liked the oval, not even from day one. (But I'm not saying you won't like yours.) I wanted either a round or an emerald cut and since it was my one big diamond, I chose round because they sparkle more and after seeing CBIs I was in love! I told myself I'd buy a smaller emerald cut for another place on my body later in life, which I'm saving up for now.

I'm 100% happy with my choice.

Can you buy a CZ oval to try for awhile?

Fully understood. I know searching and having no success can take it's toll on you. You'll definitely get what you want going the custom route....the only stress there is playing the waiting game!
