Opinions on building my own eternity ring

I have been researching buying an eternity ring for my wife with 30pt diamonds. I find that the pricing online and in local jewelry stores of eternity rings is completely opaque. Some sites will tell you the color and clarity of the stones that they use but none give you the cut grade. And none of them have stones with GIA grading reports, so the color and clarity are just the vendor's opinion which can tend to be inflated. I honestly can't tell the difference between an F color and an I color, nor the difference between a VS1 clarity and an eye clean SI1 clarity. The most important characteristic of the stones that affect their visual appearance the most -- the cut quality -- is left a complete mystery. Because of the lack of transparency, a consumer has no way of knowing whether he is getting a good deal.

So, I was thinking of purchasing 15 same size GIA certified stones with excellent cut grades online, and bringing them into a local jewelry store to get them mounted into an eternity ring setting purchased at the jewelry store. I have looked at some settings locally and know how many diamonds I need to purchase. Has anybody here done anything like this? Do you think this is doable?

Both Whiteflash and Brian Gavin give cut grades for their eternities. I would be interested if the price for ACA eternity is higher or lower than you sourcing for yourself. I have a lovely ACA myself.

Just make sure an eternity ring that size is comfortable to wear. 30 pointers are pretty large between the fingers.

Agree with previous statements...have a vendor such as WhiteFlash or Engagement Rings Direct make the ring using ideal cut diamonds. That is a far better way to go. You do not need individually certified diamonds for an eternity ring, and you'll overpay if you do.

Second, 30 pointers is going to be really thick, and most people who use 30 point stones make a 5 stone band and not a full eternity. I think 20 pointers is plenty large for a full eternity to wear as a stand alone ring.
