Hi y'all!
My husband and I are looking into upgrading my centerstone. I currently have a 1.01 RB and am looking into upgrading to a 1.5+ rb or princess. We plan on purchasing most likely from one of the online jewelers that gets high praises on these forums. We know quite a bit about purchasing RB's already as we lurked on here to get info on them. However I know nothing about purchasing a Princess if I go that way. I have some questions if you all would like to give some advice.... :)

1. Will I notice a difference in a aprx. 1.5ct RB from a 1 ct RB? I have a 4.5 finger if that adds to noticing a difference in size
2. What key elements should we be looking at as far as a princess goes? I originally wanted a cushion but don't like how small they face up, and inclusions and color show through so much more. How about with a princess? Any color or clarity I need to stay above?
3. Anyone have photos of a princess around 1.75cts? I saw one at a local jeweler and it seemed to face up quite close to the same size as a 1.5ct round.

Any advice is appreciated!

quick answer to the RB question:
If both are not either steep/deep or shallow/shallow, (both are the approximate diameter that a modern well-cut RB should be), jumping from 6.5mm to 7.4mm or so will be one heck of a difference. It's the surface area of a circle. There are diamond size charts on the /Net and maybe here that show you the mm size vs. ct weight.

A 6.5mm princess will have a larger diameter than a 6.5mm round, because there's more surface area. Also, the big prongs to protect corners of princesses add to the apparent size. The corners are prone to chipping, though.

There are some princess cut guidelines on here someplace. It was discussed not long ago. I'm not a princess fan, so I don't follow them. They are apparently past their peak popularity and maybe than will get you a better price.

Yes, I went from a 1 ct. round to a 1.5 ct. round and there is definitely a difference. I still wouldn't mind going to maybe 1.75 in a round, though!

Two sources of ideal cut princess stones are Good Old Gold (not seeing any right now around your size there) and WhiteFlash. That is the main key to finding a good princess...look for AGS Ideal cut. Some people say you can go a little lower in color in a round than fancy shapes such as princess. I'd probably make H color my lowest.

Thanks for the info everyone! I will check out the links. I'm sure I will think of more questions. Also, as far as princess being past their peak, I was thinking about this as well. Sways me to stay with an RB a little bit!

Keep in mind that if you go with a princess cut it will face up smaller then a round....so if you go with a princess it will look smaller...

It seems like the princess cuts in our range are larger than the rounds. I looked at a 1.75 princess and a 1.5 RB in store and they seem to be quite close in size with the naked eye. I know the RB has a larger diameter but I could hardly tell.

Yes, there's a visible difference in size between a 1.5 RB vs 1 carat RB.

I don't know much about princess, but cushions showing more color and inclusions may not be the case, provided you work with a good vendor who has an eye for picking out amazing stones. My cushion was appraised (face up) 2 color grades higher and 2 clarity grades higher as well.

I know in general cushions face up smaller, but I have also seen amazing cushions IRL that also face up larger than their carat weight. Princesses in general are also smaller than RB unless the cut is shallow.

I know! I am so torn between the two. I have an RB now but feel like everytime I see a gf of mine I just envy her princess cut. On the other hand, I don't want my ring to look dated or too trendy. But I do love the square shape and sparkle you get with a princess.

Yes you will see a big difference! Going from approximately 6.5mm to approximately 7.4mm is very noticeable. 8-)

Edit: I recently traded in my 1.51 RB, but when I had it I compared it to my niece's 1.5 princess and they appeared to be the same size.

Really? I've compared a princess and RB of the same weight and the rb faced up much larger.
Next dumb question....
Is the "x" in a princess supposed robbed visible from corner to corner or only in the middle of the stone?
