Well I've been looking at diamonds for quite a while now and I think I've finally found the right one from one of the forum recommended vendors! Would love to hear your opinions on whether or not I should pull the trigger and what a fair price for it is.

Stone is 2.53cts, SI1, i color

Attached is ASET and GIA. Thanks in advance!

Have you seen this stone yourself in person? I'm afraid the black inclusion would be pretty visible.

I haven't seen it in person yet; Chris from ERD found it for me and has assured me that it's completely eye clean.

I would ask him to clarify his definition of eye clean. People differ. Some say 12 inches, some 6, etc.

Is there a video of it? Can he send you one? If it's eye clean, I think it's beautiful!

You had me at antique cushion.... :saint: :halo:

Now with that said, I'm not a huge fan of this one. Honestly I think ASETs to be semi useless when looking at antique cuts. You really need to shop around with your eye. I'm not in love with the cut on this one. I find the cutlet to be distracting and sucks you in like a black hole. But then again I have a strong perference for a strong maltese cross on my antique cushions. Antique cuts are very preference driven so what appeals to some might not appeal to others.

Could you explain a bit more to me what a maltese cross is? He actually had the stone recut as the culet was actually bigger before. Asking price is $21k; should I have him keep looking?

YES I would keep looking- seriously 21k for that!!! Sorry but for that price you could get something, at least to me, much better. Other great places to look for antique cuts are Jewels By Erica Grace (wonderful ladies) and Old World Diamonds. Adam is typically the main person you would deal with there. Jbeg has a great website where with OWD I would call or email them as they don't update their site. ERD is great with cushions but I have found they also are limited when it comes to antique cuts.

Below is a picture that ChunkyCushionLover made to show the basic outline of a maltese cross eons ago that I have kept. Ideally as the cushion or OMB rotates each windmill/ facet/ whatever you want to call it will turn and off as it rotates light through. Meaning only 1-2 of the facets should be dark while the others light up. As you look at cushions and all the windmills/ facets are dark that is definitely a diamond you want off your list. The table size will also affect the MC. If the table is over 52% the cross won't reflect light uniformly. Which is I think the major issue I have with the one you posted. The entire middle just looks like dead space to me with a large large black hole of a cutlet. Though I"m not sure if I would call that a maltese cross. Perhaps some of antique cut experts will pipe in on that one. Ideally I love strong maltese cross or a snowflake, flower pattern in the center.

If you haven't already I would look at Charmy's guide to making a HW inspired halo. I know you don't care about the setting but it is great information on different types of cushions. While I have a strong perference for an actual antique diamond, others do prefer branded or newly cut diamonds that have optimum light performance that are cut to look like old cuts. So perhaps that might be up your alley vs. actual antiques. For me they are unromantic but to each their own.

Another helpful thread might be the Old Cut Lovers which shows many different types of old cuts with different facet patterns. Perhaps one of them will speak to you. I know when I was shopping around I knew from looking at pictures on that thread that I wanted a pillowy shape, strong MC, table of 48-50% with depth around 60%. Plus if you send pictures of old cuts you like it will help them narrow down the search as all cushions, OEC's, etc are not created equal.

Edit to add that really 21k for an I, Si1 isn't bad. However I think you can do better on pricing and on overall look for an antique cushion. I wouldn't have bought the one you posted if it were 14k let alone 21k. To me it just has zero appeal, but once again facet patterns are personal preference. I'm sure there are ppl out there who think my antique cushion is fugly so really to each their own.

it looks really nice to me especially for that price. That is a large stone for an antique cushion. I think she will love it. I'm not a stickler for perfectly eye clean though. I was comparing it to the J color 2.4c that is sold and it is an higher color...I choose color over a clarity any day as long as it is relatively eye clean. Also not a fan of the maltese cross...so I like it because it doesn't have that facet pattern. Some prefer the maltese cross but haven't seen those in person. To each his own for preference though. Hope it's the one.

A black inclusion right in the center of an antique cushion would eliminate it for me. Also, I prefer an antique cushion to have a more rounded, cushiony shape as opposed to more square. I really think you can do much better than this one.

Definitely not for me. Judging by the dimensions of the stone, and the relative size of the inclusion, I KNOW that wouldn't be eye clean to my standard. I don't think it would be eye clean to many standards -- once you found that spot in the middle, your eyes would always alight there first.

If the inclusion weren't there, I still wouldn't like that stone for that price. I also prefer my cushions...softer? This seems to have fairly 'hard' lines and looks angular. I think the ladies at JbEG or Adam at OWD could find you something prettier at that price point.

Definitely not eye clean, the 2,5 ct si1 stone.
