And Megascope cert is attached.

This baby in one of those settings Gypsy posted? It is under 2 cts but at around 7.8mm is a NICE spread!!

Oh yeah!!! We have a winner! IMO... this is the best of both worlds. GOG has Upgrade. Phillip has antiquey settings (18K under 500 bucks with diamonds!) And at 7.8 mm it's almost to the spread of a 2 carat.

Now all we need is Professor to come out of hiding...lol.

ETA: Although I am personally a BIG fan of that Lilly of the Valley ring. Love how white that K looks in that finish.

FINALLY--there it is!! Don''t know why it wouldn''t post before. Thanks for the thumbs up, Gypsy--this seemed like it could do the job!!

MovieZobie, thanks......I agree, there''s something very special about the hand "real estate" that gorgeous "brazillian cockatiel" diamond takes up!

OK Professor, we''re waiting for Office Hours!!!

Ooh, good find, Julie!! At the upper end of his budget, but if he added $400-500 he could still do one of those antique-y setting. Hmmmm.

Here''s the 2.55 M Julie found:

Holy crap! 2.5 carat would knock a size monger''s socks off. Put that in a three hundred dollar setting and BAM!

Dancing Fire, that''s a good question--Gypsy had mentioned the potential of upgrading a GOG stone but I don''t know about their policy. Somthing to think about, though.

....on the other hand, if we somehow manage to throw enough at Professor that we find him a stone that will work SIZE-WISE for his gf, maybe they won''t want to upgrade?

Oh. Hmm. Still we are talking about 1.8 and 2.5 carats. (Is it just me or does that 2.5 carat look like it could be recut for higher clarity??)

I think the M SI2 looks pretty good clarity-wise...check out the darkfield clarity pictures.

Anyway, a 38.8/41.3 would only work in those high temp settings, so just ask GOG to send one for free and then super-glue it in.

Steep/deep stones benefit from high settings where light can come in from the bottom (and escape through the top)

The plus is that high four prongs are inexpensive.

But... and I feel like a dummy here, what does that have to do with glue and temperature???

Here''s the HCA on the first GOG (the 1.78 N)

Holloway Cut Adviser
Selected: 60.5% depth, 61% table, 38° crown angle, 40.6° pavilion angle
The result is for a symmetrical diamond with a medium girdle and very good polish
HCA scores were adjusted Dec. 15, 2001 and Feb. 6, 2003.

Factor Grade
Light Return Very Good
Fire Good
Scintillation Good
Spread
or diameter for weight Very Good
Total Visual Performance 3.9 - Very Good - Worth buying if the price is right

And the 2.55 M:

Holloway Cut Adviser
Selected: 61.2% depth, 65.6% table, 38.8° crown angle, 41.3° pavilion angle
The result is for a symmetrical diamond with a medium girdle and very good polish
HCA scores were adjusted Dec. 15, 2001 and Feb. 6, 2003.

Factor Grade
Light Return Fair
Fire Poor
Scintillation Poor
Spread
or diameter for weight Very Good
Total Visual Performance 6.4 - Fair

HMMM....so the larger one didn''t fare well at ALL. Those depth/table #''s almost look switched!?!

No, those temporary settings that just clamp on the stone. you''d have to glue it because a knock and you''ll lose the stone.

Jokes...never explain.

Okay... so it would benefit most from a setting that lets the amount of light-- like a temporary setting. So it would be best to have Jon send one of those with it-- and then superglue the sucker and hope it holds?

We'd have to antique the setting though. Maybe glue some pave on???

ETA: Oh Good Holy God! TEMPorary... not TEMPerature. ROFLMAO. That was BAAAAD!

Oh god. I have this image of budget minded (and 1/2-deranged) PSers trying to somehow BEDAZZLE a temp. setting!!!!

Well, it might be fun.

Then again, it would certainly be funny!

Back on topic...I pulled the .gem files on the M and the N, to get a better picture of things.

In terms of light return, they're more similar than the HCA scores suggest.

I was looking at the M SI2 last year on the site, I don't think it has a certificate on it, just so the professor knows, but obviously the price will reflect that too. It was the numbers and the HCA scores that made me pass it by although it might look nice.
