hi everyone ,

my cousin wants the most bang for his buck with a pear or round. his budget is 3000 for the stone and doesn't have a clarity preference but doesn't want to go lower in color than a J (wants to keep as white as possible) . any suggestions are appreciated !

Those specs seem reasonable, however, I wouldn't go lower than I in an oval... they show tint more than MRB's.

Is that just for the stone or the whole ring?

Also, what are his lady's preferences?

Why does your title say oval but your post say pear? Which is it?

Oops so sorry ! tried to edit but it's too late. definitely between round and oval . his fiance to be likes any round shape so she will be happy with round or oval. he just wants it to look as big and sparkly as possible !

edited. Diamond is an M color.

thank you so much for the suggestions! I'm not sure if my cousin is ok with preloved , but I'll send them over . any other stone suggestions ? 3k for the stone alone , flexible on setting . he was browsing blue nile and James allen hu5 didn't know how to narrow it down

This oval is really nice:

This one is nice as well:

They are both 5x7 which means there are a TON of stock options for settings. I would not get the setting from ED because their 14kt solitaires start at 700. And I KNOW You can get a stuller setting that is just as nice (or nicer) for less locally. Or from a PS vendor if you want.

These should be very affordable. If you can afford it, I would go for the 14kt X1 alloy for white gold because it won't need replating.

thanks Gypsy for the great suggestions. I will forward this thread to him. I hope he pursues one of these options! I wish I had found pricescope before my engagement, such an amazing resource

hi everyone !

my cousin sent along these 2 images from James Allen. unfortunately, they are not what was recommended here . with my untrained eye, neither of them look great but I thought I'd get the expert opinions to dissuade him

yeah, you are right, neither is fantastic. I'd have to see the videos to say more, either way. Please link me.

Those are both dead. The ASET is accurate. :blackeye:

Total pass.

A slightly smaller better cut, and higher color stone is a MUCH better choice than a big, yellowish, dead rock that is slightly bigger.

I really recommend the two 80 point stones I picked before. They will SPARKLE and ovals face up big for their weight so they WILL be beautiful and large.

We REALLY don't recommend J ovals unless the person specifically WANTS something warm. J is WARM in an oval .

thanks Gypsy. I definitely urged him to reconsider the ones you suggested. Are there any at james allen worth pursuing ? he likes the prices of the stock settings there

I looked. No there's nothing as nice.

Honestly, those stuller settings I linked to are great choices.

Do you know why?

He can go to a GOOD local jeweler to buy the setting and get the stone set. Develop a relationship with them. Have the ring checked regularly and get it cleaned professionally.

And the prices on those settings are very good.

That one you just posted is mostly mush. See the white bowtie? Look next to it. All those mushy facets. Not a good thing.

If he wants to shop a JA, then it's a round, not an oval.

Good news is, since you get MUCH MUCH better light return in a round, you can go down in color. Which you can't with an oval.

So, here are the choices:

https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.90-carat-k-color-vvs2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-1868075 K
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.82-carat-j-color-vs2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-1128375 J
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.81-carat-h-color-si1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-1833535 (this one needs an idealscope image because the crown is over 35) Put on hold before it gets snatched.

Any of these would be a nice choice.

I'd only do the K with an all metal solitaire.
The H gives you the most flexibility. And is personally the one I'd want. The J is lovely though, and gives you room for a nicer setting, possibly.

thanks so much gypsy. these are incredible suggestions and I hope he snaps one up immediately. I have to say, as receptive as my cousin is to my advice and info, its not the easiest thing to try to convince him to purchase exactly what I say lol (understandably, its his $). I have referred him to this site and to this thread, hopefully he'll see what an amazing resource this is. I wish I had discovered pricescope earlier in my eRing search, while I love my ring, I can't help but wonder about the cut of my stone from time to time.

thanks again everyone, and esp Gypsy! i will update this thread with what happens next
